FS was the first in the world to adopt it, and in 2006 received the Best Paper Award from the World Congress on Railway Research. Adopted by the EU as standard for new High Speed networks, Level 2 E RT M S/ETCS eliminates the possibility of human error, ensuring continuous control over the train s movement. This result is the highest degree of safety at the highest speeds, enabling a greater frequency of trains, which may run even only a few minutes apart from one another. 16 The Turin-Lyon High Speed rail link is part of the greater Corridor V project for a continuous rail line from Kiev to Lisbon: it is an essential link in the development of a trans- European rail network From Italy to Europe T U R I N - L Y O N At a regional level, the new line will reduce pollution and will improve relations and exchanges between two important economic areas: Northern Italy (the plain of the River Po and the Northern Alps) and the Rhone valley in France. H I G H S P E E D L I N E The objective of the French and Italian states is to use this new link to produce a massive transfer of freight traffic from road to rail. This is all the more important in view of numerous projections which indicate that by the year 2015, the existing road and rail infrastructures will be saturated. Transferring road traffic to rail will allow an increase from the current 10 million tons of freight transported by rail per year to more than 40 million tons in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne Shaft La Praz Shaft Villarodin-Bourget / Modane Mont d Ambin Maddalena exploration tunnel Length: approx. 7,500 m Shaft Length: 4,000 m Shaft Saint-Martin-la-Porte 6.5 m 11 m Base tunnel Shafts Exploration tunnels The image is taken from the LTF 2010 brochure Nouvelle liaison ferroviaire Lyon Turin FRANCE ITALY Exit Susa Valley 8.4 m 8.4 m Shaft Villarodin-Bourget / Modane Part of this new rail line will run in a 50 km sub-alpine tunnel.
