The goal of this session is to equip attendees with the knowledge needed to identify and cultivate a plan of action to strive for diversity in all health professions. 1. After the presentation, the attendee will be able to structure diversity services for health profession students. 2. After the presentation, the attendee will be able to develop, implement, and assess retention and recruitment efforts for underrepresented students. 3. After the presentation, the attendee will be more prepared to identify and cultivate a plan of action toward overcoming limitations such as: securing funding, inspiring institutional buy-in, and creating collaborative partnerships.

Advise for Learning, Mentor the Heart for Inclusion Speaker: Sherry C Babbage, DMD of University of Louisville Gulfstream-Hialeah The roles of mentors and advisors are very important in reaching goals. Mentors and advisors prepare and support students and each other with in the health professions race for inclusion as a practicing health care professionals, administrators or educators. 1. Define the role of mentor and advisor in student and institutional success 2. Discuss the differences between mentor and advisor roles 3. Develop an action plan to use principles of the sessions presentations for students and institutions to reach the finish line of inclusion III. Scholarships and Loan Repayment for Mission-Driven Health Profession Students Speaker(s): Leah Henao, MPH of Health Resources and Services Administration & Aileen Edwards Harris, MSA of Capital Area Health Education Center Kentucky Suite From Alabama to Los Angeles, the National Health Service Corps serves patients in communities with limited access to health care. Many people live in areas where they go without essential health services or have to travel long distances to see a primary health care provider. There's a need for dedicated and culturally competent health care providers. Learn about the financial support available for the health care providers who choose to practice in these communities. 1. Assist their student's in knowing which scholarship and loan repayment programs they are eligible to apply for if they are interested in practicing in underserved communities. 2. Educate their students and fellow faculty members regarding the need for primary care providers in urban, rural, and frontier communities in the United States and its territories. 3. Join the National Health Service Corps Ambassador Program (volunteer) so they can be further trained on this topic to the benefit of their students and institutions. 2:30 pm - 2:45 pm BREAK

Vause Jr, DHSc, MPAS, PA-C of Salus University Keeneland The session is designed to give educators a sense of how current computer technology can be utilized in the classroom. This is particularly important in the age of students who grew up using this technology as part of their everyday life. 1. Participants will gain understanding of the use of the personal computer based technology in the classroom 2. Participants will gain insight into the economic advantage of the e-textbook and its use in the modern classroom 3. Participants will gain understanding of the learning style of the modern student and how to best use current technology for learning II. Talking Bias: Engaging Institutional Leadership in Diversity Education Initiatives Speaker(s): Ryan Simpson, MDA; Katie F. Leslie, PhD; V. Faye Jones, MD, PhD, MSPH all of University of Louisville Gulfstream-Hialeah This session will provide a case study of how the AamC/Cook Ross Inc. "Unconscious Bias in the Health Professions" training was successfully implemented and adapted for faculty, staff, and student groups at a health sciences center. Participants will engage in action planning to identify strategies to disseminate diversity content within their respective institutions 1. Engage institutional leadership for support of diversity training initiatives. 2. Partner with departments, committees, and individuals to expand your reach to various institutional groups. 3. Appropriately adapt diversity content to meet the unique needs of student, faculty, and staff audiences.

Reading Professors' Strategies on Reasoning and Critical Thinking in Medicine Speaker: Patsy Self Trand, PhD of International University & Kay Lopate, PhD of the University of Miami Kentucky Suite This session, will outline what two reading professors with extensive experience in teaching reading, critical thinking and reasoning in pre medical and medical programs at several universities, feel students should do to succeed in a medical career. The presentation will cover how to make a medical school time line that helps students meet the benchmarks to take the MCAT, how to think through the test and medical school readings using linear markings, and how to use the backup system to pass the USMLE, in other words: how to make it to the finish line! Since this presentation is activity based, all workshop participants must apply these strategies to the handouts or the materials they brought to the session; therefore, participants are encouraged to bring their current course schedules and a medical school textbook or MCAT readings. 1. After this presentation the attendee will be able to develop a time line of study and bench marks to be ready for admittance to medical school. 2. After this presentation the attendee will be able to choose 4 professional journals as a reading, critical thinking and learning tool. 3. Filling the Gap: Developing Pipeline Structures for Residents and Fellows Speaker: Brittney M. Richardson, MD & Ryan Simpson, MDA of University of Louisville One of the components needed to build more inclusive and diverse health professionals and educators is to support residents and fellows underrepresented in their field to achieve their career and professional goals. This can be done through resident/fellow organizing and pipeline programs. This session will tell the story and development of the University of Louisville's Health Science Center Diversity Alliance, which was created to fill pipeline gaps for medical and dental residents and fellows. Participants will learn what worked and what didn't in this organization's development. They'll also determine which elements they'd like to use at their institutions. Interactively participants will share their stories of supporting underrepresented residents and fellows in a collective learning environment, and all will walk away with next steps they can take to their home institutions. 1. Use or adapt the University of Louisville, Health Sciences Center (HSC) model for its HSC Diversity Alliance (which works to collaboratively support under represented postgraduate trainees in healthcare in achieving their personal and professional goals) for their own purposes. 2. Access information from other participants regarding the needs, challenges and strategies for supporting underrepresented residents and fellows. 3. Will develop a perspective on how the 2015 MCAT defers from the prior one and will provide suggestions as to how students must prepare and how advisors/counselors/instructors can educate them on how to meet the challenge of the MCAT. 1. Alexander, PhD of UCLA Gulfstream-Hialeah More and more undocumented students are pursuing a medical education since President Obama issued his Executive Order granting eligible youth the opportunity to reside and work in the United States. Health profession schools have yet to fully understand the impact of this Executive Order and how to proceed with admitting DACA students. 1. Identify who is eligible for DACA status and what current law states. 2. Identify obstacles DACA students face in their pursuit of a medical education. 3.
