1 APPL 182: Organizational Leadership and Management Carey Institute/Winnipeg Campus COURSE DESCRIPTION Instructor: Rev. Dr. Joseph Kibwaa Contact: 3 undergraduate credit hours January 25- March 1, 2014 This course is designed primarily for students who are immigrants to Canada. It will be taught in Winnipeg, Manitoba under the direction of the Carey Institute. The course will enable students to enter into deeper understanding of organizational leadership and management. The students will be exposed to critical issues of leadership and management through lectures, presentations and outside speakers. They will also learn to engage in biblical reflection that will bring together a theological perspective on leadership and the experiences of their lives. Participants will be encouraged to work with the text, content of the lectures, scriptures and their personal stories in order to fully understand the nature of organizational leadership and management and how they can effectively be able to participate both individually and collectively in their specialized fields. LEARNING OUTCOMES Affective: Feel a sense of greater love for God who is committed to lead them all, to live in harmony with one another. Cognitive: Understand and articulate the concept and nature of God s rule of leadership that draws everyone to the full knowledge and love of Jesus Christ in their lives. Behavioural: Be able to define key aspects of leadership in reference to their employment for secular or faith-based organizations. Be able to articulate an understanding of God s rules on leadership in the Bible and the current context of Winnipeg. 1

2 REQUIRED READING Bill Hybels. Courageous Leadership. Grand Rapids: Zondervan The cost is $13.05 per text on Amazon. Course notes which will be provided on the first day of each class. Selected articles which will be distributed to students prior to classes. CLASS THEMES AND ASSIGNMENTS Each class session will be divided into two parts: A lecture on a theme related to the topic of Leadership and Management An interactive session that will take a variety of forms (1) reflective sharing related to leadership, (2) outside speaker on a particular theme, (3) discussion of the reading from the text. Students will be expected to (1) read the assigned pages of the text book and any additional articles before each class, (2) attend all classes and participate actively in the discussions, (3) submit a written assignment of two pages each week, (4) submit the final assignment within two weeks of class 10. The final assignment consists of a major paper. The paper will focus on a particular theme of leadership that is important in the career of the student. This topic may be related to leadership and management issues of a local congregation, a Christian service organization or a secular employer. Students will be assessed on the manner in which they present the problem, analyze potential solutions, consider perspectives of theology and ethics, and offer a conclusion. (Maximum length: 8 pages). Personal and organizational No reading required No reading because students do not have text. 2 Write a personal reflection paper that deals with your own sense of mission, your gifts and preferred leadership style, and your sense of what knowledge and skills you require to increase your leadership effectiveness.

3 Class 3 Lecture: Principles of strategic planning to accomplish the mission of a congregation or organization. Workshop: My experience in strategic planning. Class 5 Lecture: Participatory project design and management (Guest presenter: Alden Braul CFGB) Workshop: Case study. Class 6 Lecture: Leading the organization through change Sharing: Dealing with Discouragement. Class 7 Lecture: Financial management Workshop: (Guest presenter). The duties and legal responsibilities of a church treasurer. Class 8 Lecture: The personal life of a leader. Workshop: Presentation and Discussion of balance in work and personal life. What were the different positions taken by people? How was the problem resolved? What could have been done differently? What insights from the Christian scriptures on leadership and conflict management would have been helpful? Write about a time when change was introduced into a congregation or an organization. What feelings emerged? How was opposition or resistance expressed? What could have been done differently to respond to concerns and criticisms? What lessons have been learned that could assist other leaders who need to introduce change into their organizations? Write a reflective paper on the steps you will take to guard and develop your personal life as a leader. Devote one or two paragraphs to each commitment that you make. 3

Relate your mission to 1 Corinthians 12: STUDENT GRADES Attendance and Participation 30 hours 10% Reading 30 hours Class Assignments 20 hours 40% Evaluation Assignments 17 hours 20% Final Assignment 20 hours 30% 117 hours total 100% CLASS SCHEDULE The course is designed to offer three credits upon completion. Students are expected to attend 30 hours of classroom instruction and to study outside the classroom for a minimum of 90 hours over the weeks of the course. The 30 hours of instruction will be scheduled for six hours on five Saturdays. The classes will take place from 9:00am to 12:00 noon and from 1:00 pm to 4: 00 pm. The place of instruction will be Broadway First Baptist Church. The dates of the course are January 25, February 1, 8, 15, and March 1. 5 Note: You may take the first course before applying to Carey for the program. In other words, Carey will not require you to pay the $60 program application fee at the time of this course Church Leadership and Administration. You are required to pay the $100 course registration fee. Those intending to complete the Certificate in Ministry program should apply to the program now. Confidentially and Other Ethics of our Time Together: As we speak about our friends, family and fellow worshippers, we will speak knowing that what we say has an impact on us, and God. Hence, we will speak well of people and anything that might be said in error, we will correct. Also we will not speak to anyone outside the class of what is personal to other students in our class, and when someone says, this is confidential, we understand this to mean that we will not speak of this to anyone. Extension Policy Students are encouraged to study together and discuss the questions and topics of the class. However, you are pledging on your honour that the papers you turn in are your own work. If you cite other people s work in your papers, you must include a proper notation. Students are expected to turn in all assignments on time. In case of emergency or unforeseen circumstances, it is the student s responsibility to contact the instructor immediately and apply for an extension with the understanding that it may result in a reduction of grade. Gender Language Policy As language usage changes over time, the church must discern where its own language must change in order to continue to bear witness faithfully to the gospel. Modern English usage has moved away from using masculine terms to refer to groups that include women. The continued use of such terms in worship, writing, or conversation miscommunicates the invitation of the gospel and the nature of the church. This policy refers to humankind. Examples of inclusive language for persons can be found in the NRSV and the TNIV translations. In regards to Scripture texts, the integrity of the original expressions and names of God should be respected. The language of previous eras and other authors need not be rewritten to conform to contemporary usage. It is expected that inclusive language will be used in written work, publications, and classroom conversation. Bibliography 5
