The World of Numbers 2nd project meeting Árpád Gimnázium, Budapest 6 17 March 2011
Monday the 7th of March The first schoolday started in excitement, as the Polish students came to Árpád for a kind of sightseeing tour within the school building. First of all, Principal Róbert Gyimesi and Gergely Tanárnő greeted our guests, then I gave a short lecture on the history and present of Árpád Secondary. To our surprise, the Polish group had attended a Hungarian language course and they had prepared with some heartwarming Hungarian sentences. It was a huge success everyone was smiling. After that, I became their guide in the school. We went through the most important parts of the school. We started with the aula, then came the big lecture room, the library, which was presented professionally by Terjék Tamás, and so on. We met Orosz Tanárnő in the Music classroom and she invited us to sing a few songs. Paulik Rita introduced the choir and music tuition to the guests, then we went to the IT classroom on the 2nd floor. Sztojcsev Tanárnő explained the IT tuition and examination system in Árpád. On the 5th lesson, Koncz Tanár Úr taught us some interesting facts about the lottery, then, in the 6th lesson, Sztojcsev Tanárnő demonstrated the use of GeoGebra, a dynamic mathematics software. Although a cold and strong wind was blowing, the sun was shining when we went on a sightseeing tour in the city. The first station was Bem Square, then came a walk on the Castle Hill. Eszter s sister, Juli Tétényi was our guide. There would have been two more places to visit but we were cold and tired so we called it a day and went home. Zoltán Lakos 2
Tuesday the 8th of March This was our third day. We had to be at the school at 7:30 in the library where we were listening to the presentasions of the Polish students about Poland, Nysa and the Eastern customs in Poland. The presentations were very intresting and they contained a lot of information. After that we were going to the ELTE University where we had an exciting demonstration about robots and what is more after that we could write programs for them and we also used other robots. For example we pulled down Kata s zipzar with the best robot. There were about two hundred computers in that place, which was amazing. We also had a chance to visit the special biological collection of the university. We had time to have lunch in the school or at home before visiting some museums. Some of us met at the school and others joined us at the museum. First we saw the Óbuda Museum which showed the history of Óbuda from the Middle Ages, and after it we could move into the museum of Victor Vasarely. But the most exiting event of the day was the cruise on the Danube. It took 2 hours and we could see the night view of the city. Péter Pádár, Dávid Bánhídi 3
Wednesday the 9th of March On the third day of the 2nd project meeting we had to go to school at 7:30 as usual. We had 2 lessons to discuss and organize things about our math topics. After the workshop, we visited the University of Óbuda. We saw a presentation about the improvment of calculation tools and the history of informatics equipment. We could have a look at one of the largest lecture rooms, which was enormous The whole building was modern and wellequipped. We went to the lecturer s private room where we could see components of computers and even a flightrecorder (black box). While we were in the university, others who are language class students,, were in the Balassi Institute of Hungarian Culture. Then everyone went back to school for a maths competition. The first part was an original test, but the second was a little bit special. t was a letter bidding game. We have played it for several times, but for the Polish student it was new so they had to understand the rules first. In the end Gábor and his team won the competition and their price was some chocolate. After lunch, we met in the school to do some sport activities. We could play volleyball, football and table tennis. Because of the cold weather, almost everybody was playing volleyball in the gym. I think everyone had a good time and at the end of the day all of us got exhausted. Nikolett Semsei 4
Thursday the 10th of March On Thursday we had quite a busy day. First we met outside the Parliament at 8:20, but unfortunately we had to wait quite a lot because we could only get in at 9 o clock. While we were waiting we saw soldiers practising for the ceremony of the 15th of March. And we were enjoying the company of one of our teachers, László Pödör. Then we had to go through a quite strict security check, just like at the airports. Then we had the opportunity to see the beautiful parlaiment building with the red carpet and the crown jewels. After the visiting of the parlaiment, we went to the metro station to travel to a Hungarian elementary school, where teaching is in two different languages by Hungarian and native English teachers. We had an English lesson of the 6th class, and we were suprised, because they could speak English so fluently. Then we got back to our school and we had a historical competition, which was organised by Marci, Peter and Gabesz. In my opinion it was really enjoyable, and we had such a great time, because the tasks were so interesting. In the afternoon we had some free time, and then we went to Gödör in the centre of town to get to know about Hungarian culture and folk dances. We had a great time there, and we were dancing a lot, and finally we went home. Kata Fenyvesi 5
Friday the 11th of March We met at the school at 9:10. The Polish students watched a P.E. lesson. They managed to experience how complicated and spectacular the buzogány (mace) is. It is a show that the girls perform in the amphitheather at the ceremony for the school leavers. After that we were on an English lesson of Kárpáti Atilla. We sang famous songs together (Beatles and stuff) the teacher played the guitar and everyone had a great time. Then after a short meeting the celebration of 15 of March started. Although the celebration itself was in Hungarian, when it started there was a small welcome speech for the Polish students by Tamás Terjék and at the end of it a they also managed to enjoy a song performed by some teachers and Ede. After the celebration everybody went to eat out somewhere. At 13:30 we went to the Invisible museumwhich was shocking for everybody. Everybody met at the school after a little freetime and the SPAM concert started. The concert was very loud to some of us but everybody enjoed it. This day had a lot of programmes and at the end of it everybody was exhausted and tired. I m sure that everybody has a lot of nice memories about this days. :D Dóri Szegi, Luca Várady 6
Saturday the 12nd of March 12 March was the day of the excursion to Hollókő and Ipolytarnóc. We hired a comfortable bus, so the journey was pleasant we didn t have to hurry or adjust to timetables. A friendly elderly man greeted us in Hollókő and two old women sang palóc songs. After that, Alla and Pawel put on traditional costumes, which suited them perfectly just like an authentic palóc couple. Then, the man showed us the village itself. The untouched houses, the beautiful landscape and the cobble stones created an extraordinary atmosphere no wonder that Hollókő is a World Heritage Site. We visited the loom, the doll museum, a few houses and the 13th century castle. We had lunch in the Castle Restaurant. The menu was palóc soup and pancakes, both of which were delicious. We returned to the bus and headed towards the Geopark in Ipolytarnóc. We got there at 3.30 and fortunately, our guide spoke English very well we didn t have to translate sophisticated scientific terms. The Geopark gives home to petrified trees, footsteps of monsters, conserved sea sand and various fossils from prehistoric ages along a breathtaking study path. The most exciting parts of the exhibition were undoubtedly the 3D and 4D movies about the wildlife of this area millions of years ago. We got special glasses, fastened our seatbelts and travelled back in time to the age of horrifying creatures. After a short pause, we finally came home outside it was dark and everyone was exhausted after such an eventful and tiresome, but unforgettable day. Zoltán Lakos 7
Sunday the 13th of March What a pity! The oppenents didn t turn up at Hajós Alfréd Swimming Pool, so we couldn t be cheerleaders for Jávor Dani on his match. At least the Portya could start early. The mission Exercises: 1. BME Take a picture of the Corvinus! (go on foot) 2. Gellért-tér Bring us a napkin or something with the mark of Danubius Hotel Gellért! (go on foot or by tram 47-49) 3. (go on foot) It was good, as the Polish teams had quite a lot of different tasks to perform int he city. They did it very well. Congratulations! 8
Monday the 14th of March We left Budapest behind again and went to explore the Danube band. This time the host parents had been the organizers. Kata s mother had seen to it that we could go sightseeing in a little attractive electric train in Esztergom even before the season started. In fact the train was a bit reluctant to work after the long rest in the winter but fortunately it didn t spoil the good mood of the company. Eszter s sister, Juli talked about the largest church in the country, the Bazilika, which we admired in a cool wind. In Visegrád we heard about the life of the beautiful palace during the reign of King Matthias, when wine flowed from the red marble fountin, but Juli also talked about the cruel fate of Zách Felician, who attempted to murder King Charles I in By this time it had got warmer, the sandwiches and pizzas had been eaten and we went home. Thank you for the Parents. 9
Tuesday the 15th of March Family day and the celebrations of 15th March 10
Wednesday the 16th of March We have just had a fabulous experience. Today we went to the Palace of Miracles, where we walked around and looked at the wonders that Physics can produce and after that we watched an interesting series of experiments. For example we had fun with boiling nitrogen and with dry ice. As an ending, the whole group formed a huge electric circuit, which was a shocking experience, and it strengthened our friendship! Now only the farewell party is ahead of us. This will close our second meeting. There will be a very short concert of our folk ensemble, then there will be some speeches by teachers and students. We hope that the guests will like the traditional Hungarian food that will be served. Have a good journey home, dear Polish Friends! 11
