1 Welcome Courtney, Our New Coordinator! Kingstec Campus 236 Belcher St. Kentville, NS B4N 0A6 Inside Resource Spotlight Around the Province Wee Folk Centre Spotlight & Centre Tour Workshop Guidelines Workshops November / December 2014 Hello everyone, my name is Courtney Hudgins and I am the new Coordinator at the Early Childhood Development Support Centre Kingstec. I was born and raised in Annapolis Royal and now reside here in Kentville with my two Yorkshire Terriers, Ellie and Roxie. I have worked in childcare for over ten years as both an educator and program coordinator in various locations throughout Nova Scotia. I have spent several years coordinating and implementing recreation programs and had the opportunity to spend five summers in the United States working in Residential Summer Camps with staff and children from all over the world. I studied Sociology at Saint Francis Xavier University, completed a diploma with honours in Early Childhood Education at Nova Scotia Community College and I am currently working towards obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Child and Youth Studies from Mount Saint Vincent University. Outside of work I like to spend time with my family, volunteer in the community and stay active. I have a passion for working with children and families and am thrilled to have the opportunity to do that here in the Annapolis Valley. Contact Courtney at Courtney.Hudgins@nscc.ca or Important! 3 Wee Folk Centre The Wee Folk Centre has been operating since 1981 and is licensed for 56 children aged two to twelve years. We offer a part day, full day, preschool only and before and after school programs. The centre has three large classrooms and a huge playground. Within our balance of child initiated and teacher directed activities, often based on themes we develop following the children's interests, we have developed some very specific program components. We offer a very unique socialization program known as the I Care Cat Peacemaking Skills Program. This program promotes the development of self confidence, responsibility and conflict resolution skills. It teaches the children to like and accept themselves as an individual, as well as others. During our tour, ask about the Willie Wee Folk and the Wish Upon A Star activity. We teach a lot of science based activities from the Wings of Discovery Program six large binders filled with preschool science. Thirty-plus years have allowed us to collect and create a huge inventory to change the classroom environments to compliment or provoke children's interests. Come visit us on our centre tour and see how, even on a low budget, you can set up activity centers within the classroom which stimulate and engage children's imagination and creativity. Leave inspired and full of new ideas for your own classroom. ~ Submitted by Wee Folk Centre Upcoming Networking Dates ECE Networking Kingstec, 6:00 8:00 pm November 12 January 21 February 18 Child Care Administrator s Network Kingstec, 12:30 2:00 pm ccanns.org November 18 January 20 February 17 Hants Director s Meetings Family Resource Centre of West Hants, 6:30 8:00 pm November 18 January 20 Wee folk Centre Tour The team at Wee Folk Centre in Greenwood would like to invite you to enjoy their centre. Deadline to register for all workshops: January 23rd Cost: $20 per workshop. To register, Fax/mail/drop-off registration & payment to Justine in the Support Centre! MIND What You Say I 9:00 11:00 am (2 hours) $20 We ll begin with a look at what the research says with regards to language and literacy development in the early years. By exploring the theory you will develop a foundational understanding of the importance of your verbal interactions with the children you care for. So how do you put this into practice? We will learn rhymes and songs that you can weave into every part of your day while caring for the children. There will be lots of practical ideas for you to take back to your centre to create an environment filled with language, song and music. MIND What You Say II 11:30 am 1:30 pm (2 hours) $20 (18 months-3 years) Mind What You Say II workshop begins with a look at what the research says with regards to language and literacy development in the toddler years. By exploring the theory you will develop a foundational understanding of language and literacy development in this second phase of the early years. From this you will gain an understanding of the importance of your verbal interactions with the children you interact with on a daily basis. So how do you put this into practice in your busy day to day routine? We know we learn and retain better by doing so this workshop will have you talking, reading, storytelling and singing so many tunes and rhymes that you can weave into every part of your day. There will be lots of practical ideas for you to take back to your centre to create an environment filled with language, song and music MIND What You Say III 2:30 4:30 pm (2 hours) $20 (3-5 years) Using recent research as our springboard, we will develop a solid understanding of the early childhood educator s role in developing language and pre reading and writing skills with this age group. When we understand why we do something, we feel more inspired to do it! To assist you in putting the theory into practice there will be advice on the role of song, storytelling and book reading. In addition we will discuss how to set up an environment that enriches each child s language and literacy journey. Lunch is NOT provided. This project is made possible by contributions received through the Early Childhood Education Training Initiative coordinated by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
