While many evidence-based brief problem gambling screens have been developed, it has become clear that such screens do not work in actual clinical practice as they do in research studies. This workshop will discuss the gap between research and practice and present strategies to implement effective screening, brief interventions, and referrals to treatment for problem gambling in a variety of clinical settings. Participants will be able to identify key elements to effective screening for gambling problems Participants will be able to identify strategies to initiate discussion of impact of gambling in a variety of clinical settings Participants will be able to describe and utilize brief intervention and referral strategies for those at risk for gambling problems Motivational Interviewing As a Treatment for Gambling Disorder Date & Time: Friday, November 6, 2015; 10am to 4pm Region: Boston/Metrowest/Central Location: Hampton Inn Speen Street, Natick, MA Presenter: Ty Lostutter, Ph.D. Current research consistently shows that Motivational Interviewing can be a successful treatment modality for clients struggling with Gambling Disorder. This workshop will explain the history and evolution of motivational interviewing, explore motivational interviewing techniques, and provide participants with opportunities to practice the skills they have learned with examples specific to problem gambling. Participants will gain an understanding of how to utilize motivational interviewing techniques to gauge their clients readiness to change, guide clients toward recovery, and support their clients recovery goals. 4 REGIONAL TRAININGS CONTINUED Problem Gambling and Older Adults: Mitigating Risk and Understanding Treatment Options Date & Time: Friday, February 5, 2016; 10am to 4pm Location: Southeast MDPH, 1736 Purchase Street, New Bedford, MA Presenter: Cheryl Chandler, BSW and Fiorigio (Fred) Fetta, LPC, NCGC II Older adults are the fastest growing population in America, and, according to research, is a group targeted by the gambling industry as a lucrative market (Singh et al, 2007). With the amount of gambling opportunities increasing on a regular basis, it is important for all citizens to be aware of gambling and the role it can play in society. As we age, we are faced with new challenges, which can increase the vulnerability of problem gambling (i.e. loss of job, loss of relationships, family transitions, etc.) In this presentation, we will raise awareness on Problem Gambling and Older Adults through different styles of learning (lecture, case studies, role play, group participation, etc.) After completing this training, you will be able to do the following: Define gambling, problem gambling and the nine criteria for disordered gambling Learn strategies for preventing problem and disordered gambling in older adults Be able to describe a gambling treatment program Learn problem gambling clinical interventions that can be used with older adults Working with Families Affected by Gambling Disorder Date & Time: Friday, March 4, 2016; 10am to 4pm Location: Northampton MDPH, 23 Service Center, Northampton, MA Presenter: Mary Lou Costanzo, LCSW, NCGC This course will focus on helping clinicians learn how to engage and treat the entire family of problem gamblers and begin the path of recovery from this addiction. All aspects of the effects on family members will be discussed, including the financial impact on the family, the emotional ramifications, including trust, and the psychological consequences for many family members. Many family members go untreated with serious, painful effects from their loved ones gambling. While the financial impact is the most obvious, the other effects, including severe depression, trauma and inability to function, are often present as well. The clinician is in a unique position to offer help and support to these family members, but must begin with knowledge of this addiction and how family members can address the pain caused. Family members must be offered help, hope and support, and a clear understanding of how they may be able to protect themselves and function better in their world. Participants will be able to identify symptoms of problem gambling and be able to understand the impact this addiction may have on family members Participants will be able to interview, assess, refer, and treat members of the gamblers family members who may be affected by the gambling problems Participants will be able to provide a safe, therapeutic environment for growth and understanding of family members of problem gamblers as they work through the issues in themselves and their family Participants will have a clear understanding of how outside resources, such as GAMANON, financial counseling, psychiatric consultation, etc, may play a role in the recovery process for the family member Problem Gambling in the Asian Community Date & Time: Friday, May 6, 2016; 10am to 4pm Region: Boston/Metrowest/Central Location: The Nonprofit Center - 89 South Street, Boston, MA (TBC) Presenter: Tim Fong MASSACHUSETTS COUNCIL Date & Time: October 1, November 19, 2015; 3pm to 7pm Region: Metrowest/Boston/Central Location: Donovan Building MDPH, 5 Randolph Street, Canton Cost: $275 Clock Hours: 32 OR REGIONAL TRAININGS CONTINUED The Asian American community is comprised of diverse cultural groups with roots spanning many countries.
