2 ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM The Program The Alcohol and Drug Counseling Certificate Program is designed to help individuals acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to counsel those who live with the effects of substance use and addiction. Our program follows closely the educational and training requirements established by the State of California Department of Health, Division of Alcohol and Drug Programs and provides the most relevant knowledge, preparation, and instruction needed to become certified in substance abuse counseling and work effectively in this high-demand field. Substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors advise people who live with alcoholism, drug addiction, eating disorders, or other behavioral problems. They provide treatment and support to help their clients recover from addiction or modify problem behaviors in the following ways: Identify signs of substance use and addiction Participate in treatment planning Assess readiness to change Identify the beliefs and problems connected to individual addictions Counsel clients one-on-one, in families, and in groups Work as part of a team of health care professionals Act as role models for their clients

6 ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM The Alcohol and Drug Counseling Certificate Program consists of nine courses, and is designed for entry-level preparation as an addiction counselor. Drug and Alcohol Counselors assist individuals dealing with substance use-related problems, provide therapeutic support that addresses motivation, behavior change, and maintenance of sobriety. The 27 semester unit curriculum follows contemporary theory and research, with fieldwork experiences that apply best practices in a wide range of therapeutic settings. Our certificate program closely follows the California Consortium of Addictions Programs and Professionals (CCAPP), and the California Foundation for Advancement for Addiction Professionals (CFAAP) program certification standards, as well as the educational requirements for those seeking certification from the California Certification Board of Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CCBADC). Core Required Courses ADC 711 Introduction to Alcohol/Drug Studies and Rehabilitation Services Review of history and systems of alcohol and drug use in society and related treatment, and their relationship to broader rehabilitation services. Theories of addiction, biopsychosocial effects of substances, evidence-based approaches to treatment, recovery, and relapse prevention. ADC 712 Substance Use Treatment Modalities and Recovery Biopsychosocial aspects of substance use, case management and treatment modalities effective for recovery and relapse prevention.

7 ADC 713 Pharmacology and Physiological Effects of Substance Use Biopsychosocial effects of psychoactive substances including metabolic and neurologic processes, intoxication, detoxification, tolerance, withdrawal, and dependence. Pharmacological treatment of substance use disorders. ADC 714 Individual and Group Techniques in Counseling Theory and practice of individual and group counseling. Individual and group counseling skills appropriate for alcohol and drug counseling agency settings. Group process, membership, and leadership skills. Integration of theory with individual and group counseling skills. ADC 715 Diversity, Self, and Other Awareness Developing multicultural competency as an alcohol and drug counselor. Self-exploration of values, culture, and individual context to enhance self-awareness. Develop attitudes, skills, and knowledge that facilitate effective, culturally sensitive interventions in alcohol and drug counseling. ADC 716 Co-occurring Disorders in Substance Use Treatment Overview of diagnostic information of co-occurring disorders with substance use disorders, common mental health issues related to them, the differential diagnostic process using the DSM-5, and the biopsychosocial model of addiction. ADC 717 Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in Substance Use Treatment Survey of ethical, legal, and professional issues affecting alcohol and drug counselors. ADC 721 Field Studies & Seminar I Field study internship experience in which students apply the knowledge and skills developed in their coursework to supervised work in an alcohol and drug counseling setting. Weekly seminars will be used to provide academic supervision of the internship experience. ADC 722 Field Studies & Seminar II Second field study internship experience required for certification in which students apply the knowledge and skills developed in their coursework to supervised work in an alcohol and drug counseling setting. Weekly seminars will be used to provide academic supervision of the internship experience.

8 ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELING CERTIFICATE PROGRAM Eligibility The qualifications for admission to the program are a high school diploma or GED, and one year of continuous sobriety for individuals with a substance use history. Prospective students must complete an application form and supply supporting documents, which include transcripts, a life experience essay, and a completed and signed recommendation form. Certificate The program requires completion of nine courses. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 is required in all course work that applies to the Certificate, with no class lower than a C, and a 70% or higher on each course s final exam. Tuition Each course costs $750. The total program costs is $6,750. Textbooks and materials are estimated to cost an additional $1,200. Tuition and fees must be paid prior to the start of classes each term. Financial Aid Students may be eligible for private educational loans from a bank or other lender. Financial aid counseling is available. Financial aid may be used for those programs that are approved under the Gainful Employment Act. In anticipation of federal financial aid, students are encouraged to complete a FAFSA to save time when federal financial aid options are announced. The FAFSA is available at
