High functioning alcoholics can drink without any overt consequences.

4 6. Male high functioning alcoholics tend to drink more because of relationship issues. 7. The American Psychiatric Association reports that one of the biggest controversies of the 1990s in the U.S. alcohol treatment field involved the Moderation Management movement. 8. Being sober and being in recovery are the same. 9. After examining varying perspectives, it is clear that there are many paths to recovery. 10. In the SMART Recovery program, addictive behavior is viewed as a maladaptive habit rather than a disease. 11. In the SMART Recovery program, the word "alcoholic" is not used. 12. Most high functioning alcoholics do not report that their families were in denial of their alcoholism. 13. The alcoholic often chooses alcohol over his or her friends, loved ones and children.

5 14. Sober alcoholics do not fear sharing their inventories with another person. 15. Telling the truth can actually bring relief. 16. Long-term recovery is different for each individual. 17. A characteristic of long-term recovery is that being sober does not decrease alcohol cravings. 18. Although extensive addiction research has been conducted, there is not just one established relapse rate. 19. Relapse is considered by many to be part of recovery from an addiction.
