1 UNIVERSITY OF BRIDGEPORT School of Engineering SPRING 2016 COURSE OUTLINE TCMG/MEEG 573 Supply Chain Management Semester Offered: Spring 2016 Instructor: Elif Kongar Course Number: TCMG 573 Office: 141 TECH Credit Hours: 3 SH kongar@bridgeport.edu Office Hours: Tuesday : 12:30 2:30 PM Phone: (203) Thursday : 12:30 2:30 PM Course Description: The goal of this course is to cover not only high-level supply chain strategy and concepts, but also to give students a solid understanding of the analytical tools, to understand supply chain design, planning, and operation driven the performance of a firm. It also conveys how supply chain drivers used on a conceptual level during supply chain design and operation leading to performance improvement. Course Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of operations management concepts. General spreadsheet skills and familiarity with engineering topics. Course Objectives: Successful completion of the course will provide: Understand the strategic importance of good supply chain design, planning and operation Identify the major drivers and their role in supply chain performance Explain the significance of planning in a supply chain, identify decisions, and discuss the tools available for forecasting and planning Describe the role inventory plays in a supply chain and discuss actions managers can take to decrease inventories without increasing costs or decreasing product availability Describe how transportation, facilities, and information technology influence the performance of a supply chain Understand how the lack of coordination across the supply chain can result in poor performance, even when each stage is doing its best. Bonus points will be credited throughout the course. The grading is subject to change and the changes will be communicated with the students. Textbook: 1. "Supply Chain Management: Strategy, Planning and Operation", 5th edition, by Chopra and Meindl, Prentice Hall Publication Date: February 5, 2012 ISBN-10: ISBN-13: Additional handouts may be providing during the semester. Recommended (Optional) Reading: 1. Operations Research: An Introduction by Taha, ISBN: An Introduction to Management Science by Anderson, Sweeney and Williams. ISBN: Quantitative Analysis for Business Decisions by Bierman, Bonini and Hausman, ISBN: Software: General spreadsheet applications and other course related software (such as LINGO) will/may be used throughout the semester. Blackboard usage is essential for the successful completion of the course. Policies: Late homework / project assignment submission will not be accepted. Three or more unexcused absences will result in an automatic failure. Make-up exams / quizzes will not be allowed (except for prior instructor approval for a documented emergency) Homework assignments and programs are due within a week from the assignment date, unless the instructor notes otherwise. All homework assignments are to be typed. All programs are to include sufficient comments and documentation with a clear program statement. 2

3 Programs are to be submitted with all I/O files and source code hardcopies. Extra credit quizzes, assignments, and programs (if any) will be announced by the instructor. It is the student's responsibility to familiarize himself or herself with and adhere to the standards set forth in the policies on cheating and plagiarism as defined in the appropriate graduate program handbook.
