1 Instructor Information HPPE 290 SPORT LAW Course Syllabus Instructor Aaron Tuioti-Mariner, MBA MA Office Location East Campus 110D Telephone Office Office Hours By Appointment Course Delivery Online, Open-enrollment Credit Hours 3 Semester Hours Course Prerequisites None Course Time Limits The minimum course completion times for a three credit open-enrollment online correspondence is 6 weeks from the date of enrollment. All correspondence courses have a maximum course completion deadline of one year from the date of registration. Course Materials Textbooks can be purchased from the Adams State University Bookstore. To order textbooks or obtain information about book titles, you may go to exstudies.adams.edu and click on the "Undergraduate" or "Educators K-12" icon. Click on the "Bookstore" link. Click on the button that reads "Graduation, Books, Clothing & Merchandise". Click on "Books" in the green navigation bar. Select "DISTLEARN" from the department menu. ISBN: Course Description This course explores the structure of the legal system, aspects of constitutional law, labor and anti-trust law, tort law, product liability, contract law, administrative law, and statutory law applicable to the sport industry. This course also includes discussions and practical applications for establishing a risk management system for facilities and sports programs. Curricular Relationships Required for all HPPE majors in Sport Management. Student Learning Outcomes At the end of this course, students will: 1. Describe fundamental legal concepts relevant to tort law, contract law, constitutional law, labor law, and antitrust law; 2. Identify and explain the federal laws pertaining to minority populations rights to access and participate in sport; 3. Identify issues pertaining to hiring, promoting, terminating, and working with personnel; 4. Design a risk management plan that includes adequate risk management procedures including security, personal safety, and spectator liability; 5. Explain property rights including rights to physical property and creative property as apply these to sport settings; 6. Explain negligence liability, product liability, torts, and standard of care and apply these to sport settings. Additional materials will be used at the Instructors discretion and will be provided to the class via Blackboard. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure they follow the course schedule discussed in class and on Blackboard about the additional required course material. Course Procedures 2 Exams (Midterm and Final Exam) 3 Quizzes 20 Blackboard Discussions and Assignments 2 Current Events 4 Legal Case Briefs Assignments Syllabus Quiz and Agreement A syllabus Quiz and Agreement will be required prior to starting the course. Each student must read through the Course Syllabus and take the (Non-Graded) Syllabus Quiz posted on Blackboard. Students must also sign and submit the Syllabus Agreement provided at the end of the document by Friday of the first week of class. Exams There will be a total of 2 exams during the course of the semester, which are a Mid- Term and a Final Exam. Each exam is worth 100 points and will cover chapters and cases covered in the course. The exams will consist of true-false, multiple-choice, matching, short answers, and essay questions. Quizzes There will be 3 Quizzes that will cover chapters, and lectures from the course. Each quiz is worth 50 points and may consist of true false, multiple choice, matching, short answer, or essay questions. Adams State University Extended Studies Page 3 of 6 August 2014

4 Blackboard Discussions and Assignments There will be 20 Blackboard Discussions and Assignments worth 20 points each; for a total of 400 points. The Discussions and Assignments may consist of (1) video discussions, (2) case studies, (3) legal discussion questions, (4) written assignments, or (5) current legal issues in sports. Each discussion must include an initial post and one response post to receive credit. More details will be provided on Blackboard along with a grading rubric. Current Events (Legal Topic in Sport) Students are required to research a current event which relates to any topic that is discussed in class. 2 current event assignments are required for the course. Each current event requires a print out of an article, and a 1-2 page summary along with your concluding remarks. Current events can be used from any credible national media outlet such as ESPN, FOX, ABC, NBC, CNBC etc. Other sources may include review journals or credible articles. Blogs or Wikipedia will not be considered as a credible source in this assignment. More details will be provided on Blackboard along with a grading rubric. Legal Case Brief Students are required to turn in 4 legal case briefs required for the semester. Each assignment will be a minimum of 2 3 pages in length. The assignment is worth 50 points each and will be turned in on the assigned due date. The procedure for briefing a case is as follows. The student must summarize the court s decision. The assignment s format is highly structured, consisting of seven parts, each of which needs to be numbered and labeled. More details will be provided on Blackboard along with a grading rubric. Late Assignments Late assignments will be accepted upon approval from the Instructor. However a penalty of 5% will be deducted for each calendar day the assignment is late (i.e. including weekends). Late penalties will be enforced if assignments are not turned in on time. An additional 5% will be assessed for everyday that the assignment is turned in after the due date. NO makeup work will be given for late or missed assignments. Plagiarism & Cheating Plagiarism is using the ideas or writings of another as one's own. While the most blatant form of plagiarism is copying another's entire paper word for word, it also includes using another's sentence, paragraph, or ideas without giving credit to that individual (i.e. without providing a reference). Rule of thumb: When in doubt, cite the original author. If the instructor discovers an instance of plagiarism, the student will receive a failing grade Adams State University Extended Studies Page 4 of 6 August 2014

5 for the assignment, and may even receive a failing grade in the course (depending on the severity of the infraction). Blackboard Instructions A course web page will be maintained for this class on Blackboard. Announcements, lecture notes, readings, and other documents will be periodically posted on Blackboard. It is your responsibility to check the site for any pertinent class information. You also have the ability to check your grade through the course site and are responsible for doing so at least every week to avoid grade discrepancies or possible errors and to check for notices of class changes. You will need your ASU username and password to access this site. Any communication outside of the classroom will be posted on or through Blackboard. It is REQUIRED that you check Blackboard regularly so that you do not miss any announcements, s, or messages that are posted. Be sure to also check your school s, as all class s that I send are through your Adams student account. Grade Distribution and Scale In alignment with ASU academic policies, no D may apply to a major or minor field.
