The textbook e-platform Psych Portal will be an integral part of this course. Some sections will be mandatory, others can be referenced as you require. You can access Psych Portal using the code number provided with your textbook. I will review Psych Portal in class. You will need access to Psych Portal to do well in the course; thus, buying a used textbook without Psych Portal is not a good idea. Office Hours I'll be discussing my office hours during the first week of class. I am typically most available on Mondays and Wednesdays. We'll identify some times which work. I can also be reached by . Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes Psychology 1215 is a survey course, designed to introduce students to a broad range of topics within psychology. We will study seven chapters from the textbook, touching on a variety of different topics in psychology. My hope for you is that you find particular parts of the course interesting and intriguing, stimulating a desire to pursue further, more in-depth studies in a sub-field of psychology such as clinical or social psychology. By the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of, comprehension of, and analytic abilities about the content of the course, as described in the Langara Calendar, that they are capable of advancing to further studies for which this

2 course is a pre-requisite. Topics for the term will include (in this order): theories of personality (Chapter 13) and intellectual ability (Chapter 10), motivation and work (Chapter 11) and health psychology (Chapter 12), clinical psychology, or psychological disorders (Chapter 14) and the treatment of disorders (Chapter 15). At the end of the term, we will study selected topics in social psychology (Chapter 16). Course Structure and Overview In-class Meetings: The class meets on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 to 11:20 AM. Class activities may include: lectures, group activities, videos, and discussions. These activities will be based mainly, but not exclusively, on topics covered in the textbook. I will expect you to read the relevant chapters and complete specific modules and quizzes within Psych Portal. Some portions of the text will not be covered in class, so you'll be responsible for this content on your own (but bring questions to class on anything in the text that we don't discuss or post a question in Discussion on Blackboard). In addition, material will be introduced in the lecture that is not covered in the textbook. Readings and Assignments: Students are expected to actively participate in the course each week. Readings should be completed in advance of class time. Most weeks, you will be responsible for one chapter from the text. If you re ever uncertain of what you should be reading, check the week by week schedule below. There is one assignment, due in Week 6; it is a take-home assignment. I will post assignment #1 in Blackboard for you to print out. Please print and submit your assignment to me in class. On-line Participation: In addition to our two-50 minute classroom periods, students are expected to spend additional time each week (approximately two hours) on-line, reading and discussing topics raised during the week via Blackboard. On-line activities will consist of completing your readings, posting discussion topics, viewing videos, and completing modules from Psych Portal. I will provide a brief orientation to Blackboard during our first in-class meeting (you can take an on-line tutorial by clicking on the "On-line Orientation" icon on the course homepage). You may also want to attend a face-to-face orientation session provided by the EdTech department at e. I will let you know when these times are established. The purpose of these sessions is to familiarize you with Blackboard, not Psychology This session will be very useful if you have not taken a course through Blackboard before.

3 I have made every effort to integrate the classroom and on-line activities. What you do on line will feed into what we do in the classroom and vis versa. Avoid Blackboard and or Psych Portal and you ll miss a lot of what the course is all about and a big chunk of potential marks. The Discussion Board. A good portion of your on-line activity will be dedicated to the discussion board. I will post some discussion questions for each week of the course (three or so) and you will participate just as you would participate during an in-class discussion. You are required to make a minimum of 2 posts per week for a total point value of 24 (2 posts per week X 12 weeks). In addition to reading and responding to posts that the instructor makes, students are also required to create their own discussion topics/questions to which other students can respond. These must relate in some way to what we are studying that week. Students who post will be expected to moderate the topic (read the other students responses to your post) and make comments and/or encourage other discussion. Students will be awarded 3 points for each of their three posts for a total point value of 9 points for the semester. Thus, total point value for the term is 33 (24 + 9). This is an easy way to boost your grade, provided that you invest time each week in reading the posts and formulating your own responses. You must keep up with discussion posts. I will only grade contributions made during the relevant week. So, for example, in Week 2 of the course (which runs from September 12 to September 18 inclusive) I will grade posts made between the 12 th and the 18 th. After the cut-off for each week, the discussion posts will be locked out. For, for example, you will not be able to make posts for Week 2 on September the 19 th. I m not trying to be difficult; I just want to emphasize the importance of keeping current with your postings and using your on-line time each week productively. 15% of your grade is based upon Discussion participation. Psych Portal Participation. As you will see below, 15% of your grade is based on your completion of time sensitive activities within Psych Portal. You can view these activities by clicking on the Mandatory Assignments tab at the top of the Psych Portal Home page. There is a Pre-Lecture Quiz for each chapter which must be completed during the week when the text chapter is first introduced (you ll find the specific dates listed in Psych Portal). You must achieve a minimum grade of 70% on the quizzes for them to count. You are able to take each quiz up to 10 times. You will also see a number of modules listed under each pre-lecture quiz with associated due dates. Work your way through each module by the due date indicated. These will help you learn the material covered in the text, which we may not cover in class.

4 If you want to receive a grade of 100% for Psych Portal, then you will need to complete all of the modules and quizzes by the due date and achieve a grade of at least 70% on all of the pre-lecture quizzes. Exams: There are four exams. The three term exams will take place during Weeks 5, Week 8, and 11. The fourth exam will be scheduled during the regular final exam week. We won't know the date and time for the final until mid way through the term. The final will cumulative. All exams will be comprised of multiple choice questions. The final will also include an essay question where you will have to integrate concepts across chapters. You will be able to choose among topics for the essay. Tentative Schedule The dates below indicate the various topics that will be covered and when. Please read the appropriate materials prior to the beginning of class. Each week, I will reveal another week of content in Blackboard. The course is organized into four parts, with weekly content contained inside each quarterly content section. I've revealed Weeks 1 and 2 within Part I to start us off this term. If a student wishes to receive a "W", s/he must withdraw prior to the deadline.

7 Missed Tests, Assignments, Psych Portal Quizzes, Discussion Posts If you miss one of the above, then you will receive a grade of "0", unless you: 1. notify me in advance of the due date, and provide a compelling reason for why you will be absent, or 2. provide me with a doctor's note documenting your illness if you notify me of your illness AFTER the exam. It is a really, really, really good idea to notify me in advance if you are going to be late with an assignment, quiz, or cannot make a scheduled exam. I m accommodating, but much less so if you contact me several days late without a valid (e.g., medical) excuse.
