1 Business Department Course Descriptions Guide To Scheduling

2 January 10, 2014 Students, The time has come again to begin scheduling for the upcoming school year. We hope that you have enjoyed the business classes that you have taken so far and will continue to stick with the business family. We encourage you to get involved in all of the different electives that we offer in the department. The opportunities that you have are endless! If you have any questions about scheduling or the courses that we offer please see any of the business teachers or your guidance counselor. We would be happy to answer any questions that you might have. The course guide that we have created for you will help you to make a decision as to what classes you would like to register for. We hope to see you next year in our classes! 3 CTC Program Completer Requirements At State High you have the opportunity to become a completer of our programs when you are a senior. In order to become a completer; you must take a series of required classes. Occasionally the classes can be substituted on a case-by-case basis. You will also take the NOCTI exam in the spring of your senior year. The NOCTI is a state exam that students take to test their knowledge of the particular subject area that they have studied over the course of their time at State High. Students are always very prepared for this exam when the time does finally come for them to take it. Upon successful completion of the NOCTI and required courses students will be given a certificate that deems them a completer in the particular program area. Not only does this look great on college applications, it also helps our students to have higher - level positions when they go to obtain a job. Required Marketing Courses Creative Advertising Entrepreneurship Growing A Business Marketing Essentials Sales * These requirements vary based on the strand you are focusing on: Marketing, Management, Sports Management, Supply Chain or Hospitality. Required Accounting Courses Advanced Accounting 1 Advanced Accounting 2 3

4 Accounting & Finance Course Offerings Advanced Accounting 1 Y 603 Year-long, advanced credit course Will learn basic accounting principles fundamental to managing any organization. In the course students will learn Microsoft Excel & Quickbooks. Advanced Accounting 2 Y610 Year-long, advanced credit course Will learn advanced Accounting concepts to help prepare for college Business major. Students will also learn Microsoft Excel at a more advanced level. In this course students will also attend corporate tours (tours of local businesses). Stocks & Investments 1 - F/S 770 Semester-long course Students will learn the basics of stocks and the stock markets. The goal of the course is to help students understand how to minimize their risk in determining whether to buy or sell a stock. The course prepares students for investing personally or as a profession. Stocks & Investments 2 Little Lion Fund F/S 600 Year-long course In this course students will study advanced concepts in fundamental stock analysis study, and apply these concepts to managing a real $50,000 investment fund, called the Little Lion Fund. Students will buy and sell stocks in the fund, and present their results to the Fund investors at the annual Investor s Meeting. Personal Finance F/S Social Studies credit Students will learn several life skills necessary to live on their own Topics include -Budgeting -Online Banking -Insurance -Online Shopping / Preventing Identity Theft -Stock Market 4

5 Marketing & Management Course Offerings Marketing Strand Creative Advertising F/S 743 In this course students will study and create promotion plans, print advertisements and visual merchandising. They will also create real world promotions and displays for the Roar Store, teachers in the school environment and school community members as the opportunities arise. Entrepreneurship F/S 744 Students must have successfully completed Growing A Business In this course students will work together to run the Roar Store. Time will be spent on planning, promoting, and purchasing items for sale in the Roar Store. Growing A Business F/S 741 This course is a prerequisite for working in the Roar Store. Students will learn how to establish and develop their own business. Throughout the course students are also trained in the policy and practices of the Roar Store. They will also participate in hands on training in promotion, buying and sales for the Roar Store. Hospitality Marketing F/S 760 Students will study the hospitality industry focusing on travel, tourism and the restaurant business. Students will have the opportunity to tour various hotels in town as well as Penn States School of Hospitality. Industry guest speakers will be in to speak to the class about their professional experiences. Internet Marketing F/S 573 Students will manage the Roar Store Website. They will also study history of online businesses as well as current trends in Internet Marketing including the usage of social media. 5

6 Marketing Essentials F/S 740 In this course students will learn various aspects of marketing and how it applies to business. Throughout the course students work to create a marketing plan for a product that they design. Sales F/S 745 In this course students will develop the skill of selling as a real world application to be used in all facets of life. They will also complete several role -plays and product demonstrations Sports and Entertainment Marketing 1 F/S 742 Prerequisite for Sports and Entertainment Marketing 2 Students will learn how the sports and entertainment industry use marketing to promote their products and services. In this course students will participate in fantasy sports teams. Sports and Entertainment Marketing 2 F/S 739 Students may take this course after successful completion of Sports and Entertainment Marketing 1. During the course students will develop a marketing plan based around a sports or entertainment concept Students will also attend several sports related field trips. 6

7 Management Strand Management: A Corporate View - F/S 737 This course is recommended for junior and senior students interested in exploring and developing management and leadership skills. In this course students will attend various seminars and retreats. Supply Chain Management 1 - F/S 774 Prerequisite for Supply Chain 2 Will learn the basic focuses of supply chain - Procurement - Manufacturing - Distribution - Warehousing - Transportation Guest speakers from the supply chain industry. Supply Chain Management 2 - F/S 778 Must have successfully completed Supply Chain 1 Students will learn advanced concepts of supply chain Course will primarily be project and case study based. During the duration of the class students will be required to participate in a job shadow. Supply Chain Management Independent Study advance credit option. This option will only be made available to those senior students who have received an A in Supply Chain Management 1 & 2 and who have the desire to pursue a major in Supply Chain. Teacher approval must be given and not all students who apply will be selected. Students will need to have a resume and interview before being accepted. This opportunity would allow the student to be paired up with a graduate student from Penn State to complete corporate supply chain research thru Penn State s Center For Supply Chain Research. The student would need to complete a contract thru Learning Enrichment. 7

8 General Business Course Offerings Business Law F/S Social Studies credit Students will study cyber crime, court rulings, US legal system, and suing. Students will also participate in a mock trail Business Law II Ethics F/S.05 credit Prerequisite: Business Law This course introduces topics such as applying moral philosophies to Business Ethics, culture as a factor within ethics, social responsibility, moral dilemmas, and ethical standards within the business community. Focus on ethical cases such as Enron, World Com, PharMor, Napster and Ponzi Schemes will be discussed and analyzed. We will explore how laws and ethics can shape a company s decision-making process. Also studied are issues such as copyright infringement and how social media impacts ethics on a business level. A main consideration of the course is to encourage good decision making by the students as they consider their future careers and decisions they may make. Exploring Business F/S 601 In this course students will study all of the different areas of business that State High offers. The course is designed to help students pick an area of business that they have an interest in so that they can take business classes that meet their wants and needs. Typically this is the intro class for our incoming freshmen and sophomore students. In the class we will also learn proper business dress and etiquette Keyboarding This course focuses on speed and skill building on the keyboard. Students will learn to use the Microsoft Office 2010 Suite. In the course students will also study various aspects of technology: -Skype, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook. Vine -Blogging -Safe Social Networking - Etiquette 8

9 Web Design Students will use Adobe Dreamweaver to create and design their own websites. Some HTML coding will be discussed 9
