4 Minnesota Internship Center Charter School Welcome Center ~ 300 Industrial Blvd, Minneapolis, MN A Message to Students and Families Minnesota Internship Center Charter School (MNIC) August 2011 To MNIC Students and Families: This guide is a catalog of special courses and training programs offered during the school year within the district. The guide, therefore, does not encompass all of the traditional high school classes that students should expect to take and complete, as in accordance with the State of Minnesota s high school graduation requirements. As students begin their high school career, however, it is important that a strong amount of planning commences in relation to future careers and/or academic goals. As the Minnesota Internship Center schools name suggests, we take great pride in preparing as many students as possible for meaningful career training and employment opportunities. This is in addition to the standard academic coursework and preparation necessary for today s world. By providing these opportunities to students at MNIC, it is all the more important that students and families realize the responsibilities attached to these programs and their various objectives. Planning ahead of time and determining where each course/program is offered is essential. We recommend reading though the information carefully before selecting any programs or courses of study. As always, the schedule for students will be determined through a combination of factors such as: attendance, grades, credits earned and upon a teacher or advisor s recommendations. Lastly, registration counselors will attempt to accommodate every student possible in fulfilling their scheduling/program goals. Please be understanding if programs are full, schedules are modified or courses canceled due to enrollment concerns. There are also specific requirements for some training programs or others reserved exclusively for juniors/seniors. If you have any questions regarding registration or your interest for a particular training program /course, please contact your site administrator/lead teacher. We wish you and your family the best for the school year with MNIC. Sincerely, Minnesota Internship Center Charter School Staff 4
5 Minnesota Internship Center Charter School Welcome Center ~ 300 Industrial Blvd, Minneapolis, MN What are Charter Schools? Charter schools are public schools of choice that operate with freedom from some of the regulations that apply to traditional public schools. The "charter" establishing each such school is a performance contract detailing the school's mission, program, goals, students served, methods of assessment, and ways to measure success. Charter schools are accountable to their sponsor usually a local school board or a non-profit organization to produce positive academic results and adhere to the charter contract. The Minnesota Internship Center Charter School is sponsored by Pillsbury United Communities, an organization that s been serving Minneapolis for 120 years. Benefits: Charter schools benefit children and parents through: o Increasing opportunities for learning and access to quality education for all students o Creating choice for parents and students within the public school system o Providing a system of accountability for results in public education o Encouraging innovative teaching practices o Creating new professional opportunities for teachers o Encouraging community and parent involvement in public education Parents and teachers choose charter schools primarily for educational reasons high academic standards, small class size, innovative approaches, or educational philosophies in-line with their own. Brief History: In 1991 Minnesota passed the first charter school law, with California following suit in Charter schools are one of the fastest growing innovations in education policy, enjoying broad bipartisan support from governors and state legislators. There are nearly 2,700 approved charter schools in the US (over 100 in Minnesota, including the Minnesota Internship Center Charter School).
