2 MODEL TUG TORRENT RESTORED A model of the tug Torrent has recently been restored and will be unveiled to the public as part of the new Push and Pull: Life on Chesapeake Tugboats exhibit, opening at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, MD on April 21. The exhibit continues through Torrent was used as a fireboat in the Baltimore harbor before later working as a tugboat. The city of Baltimore, with its port facilities sprawling around the shores of the Patapsco River, has long relied on a fleet of fireboats to protect valuable waterfront property. The largest vessel to serve the city was the appropriately-named Torrent, which served along with fireboats named Cataract, Deluge, and Cascade. Built on the hull of a steam tug, Torrent was launched in 1921 and served until 1956 when she was replaced by a modern diesel fireboat. Carl T. Allison, an engineer on the Torrent in the 1930s and 1940s, used his leisure time to build this model of the boat he served aboard. The model was gifted to CBMM by Mildred T. Allison, in memory of Calvin F. Allison. The model came to the Museum with several parts missing or separated, and CBMM Model Guild member Ed Thieler volunteered to conserve it for the upcoming tugboat exhibit. The model features not only the five monitors or nozzles mounted on the main deck, pilot house, aft deck house, and tower, but a grate below the waterline for the water pump intake, discharge gates where hoses can be attached, and other such details. Although not a scale model the model is proportionately a little too wide and too deep for its length many of the technical details are included. This attention to detail is typical of sailormade models, those constructed by a member of a vessel s crew who knew it intimately. CBMM s upcoming Push and Pull: Life on Chesapeake Tugboats exhibit explores the world of Chesapeake tugboats and the men and women who work on them. PRC's M/V Victoria is a pushboat used for transporting barges through inland waterways. Laborde installed Mitsubishi S12R-Y1MPTA engines, rated 1,180 hp at 1,600 rpm. It also installed Twin Disc MG 540 transmissions and new RW Fernstrum grid coolers. "I talked to people that had Mitsubishi engines and they were all happy," said Marc Atkins of PRC. "We couldn't be happier with our engines. Laborde is one of the best companies you could ever work with. They set the standard on what customer service should be. You couldn't ask for a better group of people." PRC offers a wide range of services to the industrial business sector. For three generations, it has specialized in the dismantling, re-erection, demolition or closing of idle plants and equipment, the acquisition of used process equipment and the investment recovery of idle assets. Laborde is the largest Mitsubishi Marine distributor in North America with a far-reaching territory from Texas to Florida and New Orleans to Minneapolis. Excellent for the extremely heavy-duty tug and push boat applications, Mitsubishi engines typically offer significantly larger displacement and more mass. Extremely easy to maintain, each cylinder has its own head and the engine has large inspection covers on the crankcase and oil pan. The other great advantage with Mitsubishi engines is that they are all EPA compliant, but with mechanical governors. No complex electronics are required to meet the emission standards. (Source: 5/23

In 1989 a group of 70 volunteers restored the building and transformed it into a fantastic maritime museum. Momentarily a small exhibition about the shipping firm Goedkoop gives you a good impression of its early years (around 1900) of (steam) towed vessels and saloon-steamers between Amsterdam and IJmuiden and the years thereafter. The Firm Goedkoop was founded by Jan Goedkoop in He started with a ferry service to Texel, Nieuwediep and Pampus and later between Amsterdam and Nieuwediep. His sons continued the company in 1842 under the name Reederij Gebr. Goedkoop. It became a real family business and during the years the company expanded with many branches, but towing remained its core business. More about the history of Goedkoop, photo s, shipmodels and utensils are to be found in the museum (until July 24, 2012) and besides this much more about everything which has to do with seas and harbours. When you are in The Netherlands we hope you can make time to visit our museum. For further information see our website (in Dutch). 11 ACCIDENTS SALVAGE NEWS COSTA CONCORDIA: SECOND TANK COMPLETELY EMPTY After waiting for the search for survivors to end, then being forced to wait 2 more weeks during bad weather, the company hired to empty the fuel tanks of the Costa Concordia, has emptied two tanks in just two days. Smit Salvage, a Dutch company hired to pump out the oil, had prepared six forward tanks of the ship with valves during the wait and are now pumping out oil at a fast rate. The Italian news agency, Agenzia Giornalistica Italia, which also publishes in English, quotes the head of the Livorno port authority, Ilarione Dell'Anna, who says the work is progressing well. "The second tank containing 410 cubic metres of fuel was emptied at a speed of 8 cubic metres per hour. The third tank containing another 410 cubic metres of fuel is now being emptied," Dell'Anna said. "If the weather and sea conditions remain as good as in recent days the emptying of the first six tanks of the Costa Concordia will be completed in about three to four days." 500,000 gallons of oil on Costa Concordia. AGI then went on to say that after that "operations will stop to allow the flanging of the remaining nine tanks." There is no timetable set as to how long all of that will take but Smit Salvage has gone on record as saying that the entire operation should take 3 to 4 weeks. The work has gone quickly but there's been no word on whether that means, weather permitting, the operation may take less time than expected. Some 500,000 gallons of oil was in the tanks of the 114,500 ton ship, 2,300 tonnes of heavy fuel and 200 tonnes of diesel fuel. The company said it intends to pump out the fuel "round the clock." Oil Spill would endanger Marine Sanctuary. The waters surrounding the island of Giglio, where the ship lays on its side on a rocky ledge, are a part of the 'Pelagos Sanctuary for Mediterranean Marine Mammals' and home to dolphins, porpoises, fin whales, sperm whales, the giant tuna billfish, sharks and other marine life. An oil spill would wreak havoc on the sanctuary. Seventeen bodies have been recovered from the ship and surrounding waters and another 15 people are missing and presumed deceased. The captain, Francesco Schettino, is under house arrest in his home near Naples, charged with multiple offences including manslaughter and abandoning his ship in distress. The ship went down on Jan. 13. (Source: Digital Journal; Photo: BosKalis) Advertisement 11/23

(Source: Maritime New Zealand: Photo: LOC) MISSISSIPPI RIVER CLOSED BY BARGE CRASH, OIL SPILL The Coast Guard has closed a five-mile stretch of the Mississippi River upriver from New Orleans after oil spilled from a barge following an early morning collision. Officials say a tanker barge 13/23

14 pushed downriver by the towboat Clarence Settoon rammed a crane barge being pushed upriver by the tugboat Alydar about 2 a.m. on Friday about 50 miles upriver from New Orleans. The collision tore a 10- foot by 5-foot gash above the waterline of the double-hulled tanker barge and oil spewed into the river, the Coast Guard said. Chief Petty Officer John Edwards said no injuries were reported and neither barge nor tugboat sank. He said the leak has been contained, and authorities are working to determine how much oil spilled. The tank contained about 148,000 gallons of oil, but the spill was substantially less than the tank s contents, the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard says the Clarence Settoon deployed 100 feet of containment boom soon after the collision, and another 30,000 feet was available if needed. A cleanup company has been hired to take further steps to deal with the spill. St. Charles Parish authorities downriver from the crash closed intakes that draw water for drinking from the river, but said an adequate supply is on hand until water quality can be checked. They described the move as precautionary and said there appeared to be no public danger from the spill. The section of river where the crash occurred is part of a busy shipping and industrial corridor that stretches from New Orleans north to Baton Rouge. It is lined by refineries, chemical plants and the massive Port of South Louisiana, which handles much of the grain exported from farms in the U.S. heartland. Their operations did not appear to be seriously hampered by the closing of the river. However, the Coast Guard did not know Friday how long the river might be closed while the investigation and clean-up continue. (Source: The Advocate: Photo: Capt. She is the first of six ULSTEIN designed X-BOW vessels to be built in Brazil, and the very first of the PX106 design. The vessel was constructed at Estaleiro Alianca shipyard in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for shipowner CBO (Companhia Brasileira de Offshore). CBO has already two PSVs of P106 design from ULSTEIN in its fleet. When CBO in 2010 and 2011 decided to order ULSTEIN designed PSVs for Petrobras oil rigs support activities outside Brazil, their demands were such: The ships had to adapt to more and more complex operations and bring with them new technologies to provide quality services, ensure safety and protect sensitive marine environments. Their final decision was to order two small vessels (PX106) and four large vessels (PX105). The vessels comply with Petrobras 18/23

19 PSV3000 and PSV4500 tenders, and are designed for effective and flexible transportation of bulk and general cargo to installations offshore. The contracts include delivery of design, engineering, main equipment and commissioning follow-up. CBO Atlântico measures 76.3 m (length overall) by 16 m (breadth), and the depth to main deck is 7.5 m. The cargo deck area is 660 m2. Three of the tanks are multitanks of the Cargomax system. She has diesel electric propulsion and azimuth propellers, and can keep a speed of approximately 15 knots. CBO Atlântico complies with the CLEAN notation from Det Norske Veritas. The cooperation with both Estaleiro Alianca and CBO has been extremely well. We are very pleased with the finish and quality of the end product, says Project Manager at ULSTEIN, Mr. Rolf Olsen Husø. CBO Atlântico left the yard on 2 February and has entered into an eight-year contract with Brazilian state oil company Petrobras. The second PX106 is to be delivered later this year (Q2), and four PSVs of PX105 design will be delivered during (Source: Ulstein Group) WINDFARM NEWS STRATEGIC TAKES ON EURO OFFSHORE ENERGY MARKET Australian shipbuilder Strategic Marine has signed contracts to build eight offshore wind farm crew transfer vessels (including options) for the European market. The company will also be establishing a service network in Europe to support the vessels it will be supplying to clients in the region. The vessels will be managed by Njord Offshore, a subsidiary of Norse Management UK, which has a long history in the marine industry. The 20-metre catamarans were designed by ship designer BMT Nigel Gee and will be built at Strategic s Singapore shipyard. When delivered later this year, the multipurpose vessels will be among the most sophisticated in the market, built to DNV class rules (+IAI HSLC R2 Wind Farm Service 1). Each vessel will be powered by twin MTU 8V2000M72 engines and be capable of speeds in excess of 25 knots. (Source: Baird) Advertisement 19/23

20 SOUTH BOATS DELIVERS NEW WFSV ABERSOCH BAY TO TURBINE TRANSFERS South Boats Special Projects Ltd. announces the launch and commissioning of its 52nd offshore wind farm crew transfer vessel, Abersoch Bay to Turbine Transfers Ltd. Designed as a technology demonstration vessel to live test new solutions for the industry, Abersoch Bay incorporates equipment that will be fitted as standard to the new range of South Boats vessels including the 19m, 24m and 28m. Abersoch Bay is the 11th in the South Catamaran 18m Wind Farm Support Vessel series and the 7th to be built and certified to DNV class rules. New developments include, a soft mounted superstructure, anti-noise and vibration paint coatings, modular outfit, next generation bow fendering, wind turbine generators and PV panels for battery charging and reduced dependency on engine alternators, which reduces fuel consumption. Also fitted is a full LED light package reducing electrical demand, next generation integrated bridge with integrated electronic circuit breakers and full vector control system. The Abersoch Bay has an LOA of 19.1m, Beam of 7.3m, Draught of 1.1m and a lightship displacement of 40 tonnes. The vessel is configured with a central superstructure with forward wheelhouse providing a forward deck capable of carrying up to 8 tonnes of construction and O&M equipment. Powered by twin MTU 8V2000M72 965mhp diesel engines and coupled to Ultra Dynamics UJ575 water jet units the vessel achieved a sprint speed of nearly 26 knots and is capable of cruising at speeds 24 knots (90% MCR) in arrival condition. A sophisticated hydraulics system driven by both ZF3000 gearboxes powers a 5 bar 30,000 litre per hour fire pump, 1.5 tonne hydraulic capstan, clutched and braked anchor spool winch, 210 bar 30 litre per minute pressure washer system and a 3.5tm3 8 bar fuel transfer system as well as having provision for a Palfinger PK6500 deck crane and Houlder s TAS system. The integrated system offers full redundancy from two supplies. An ONAN 13.5kW 230V AC generator set supplies power to the vessels ring main and AC services. The vessel has been independently surveyed and noise levels at full power were recorded as 57dBA in the passenger saloon and 54dBA in the wheelhouse, making this vessel one of the very quietest ever built and certainly a newbenchmark for this sector. This latest generation vessel has a totally reworked interior arrangement with the entrance door forward to stbd into a changing and storage lobby incorporating a hanging area. In the saloon there are four South KPM shock mitigating suspension crew seats to port, arranged as two rows of two facing with a table and integrated floor plinths with immersion suit and lifejacket stowage. To stbd are eight further Cleeman suspension crew seats arranged as two rows of three seats and one row of two seats, with a work table for each row. Full satellite and 3G wireless internet is available throughout and a triple screen entertainment system is fitted with TV/DVD and forward looking cameras. Aft is a separate Galley area andintegrated ships workshop and electrical lockers. The wheelhouse features the first South Boats Integrated Bridge, developed with MAP and Boat Electrics & Electronics using extensive BONING equipment. The full MED approved equipment pack includes twin Furuno Radars, full ECDIS, FLIR thermal imaging camera, 10 channel recording CCTV, Satellite Compass, Class A AIS, twin Class A DSC VHF Radio s, HF Radio and Iridium Openport. The integrated bridge 20/23
