I improved my English and took french classes in the evening. But i think the real value was in meeting so many colleagues in Brussels. By November 2010, the team were able to propose, to a very satisfied client, an innovative conceptual design, reliably able to deliver 3,440 Mw, with minimal environmental impact. IN DUBAI i enjoyed a variety of power projects; starting with interactions with people in Nuclear & Retrofits group, who helped me get going in Brussels. a biomass feasibility study for CBr Lixhe where i learned a lot in a short time from a very experienced team was special. Most interesting was rodenhuize pp - Max Green project (Cfpp conversion to 100% biomass). i assisted the contract manager responsible for the boiler package and spent time on site meeting with suppliers and contractors and working to solve problems etc. i discovered i like interacting with people - and the value of languages. I came back to the Middle East in October 2010 to work on the Barka 3/Sohar MW gas-fired CCPP in oman. as this project finishes, I m going back to Saudi Arabia mid-july to work on the Tihama Cogeneration Expansion Project Stage II - a 544 MW and 1,915 million lbs/hour additional steam PP. DUBAL in dubai and QATALUM in Qatar operate aluminium smelters requiring dedicated pps of over MW. as aluminium smelters can t stay without power for more than 90 minutes (otherwise the molten salt used in the process solidifies, causing $ millions damage) investment in the quality and reliability of their pp and t&d systems is an ongoing business for these companies. Tools to simulate train network/power requirements exist, but tram networks are more complex; with more stops, traffic lights, traffic influences, speed limits etc. to consider. TENsION takes all these parameters into account, creating a dynamic tool that makes it possible to estimate the location of an active tram and its environmental influences allowing the accurate calculation of its energy requirement at any one point in time. with this level of information, the power consumption of each power station and the voltage drop in each part of the overhead line can be evaluated. alternative infrastructure designs and parameters; the optimal number and location of power stations and maximum number of trams at one time, etc. can also be assessed. TENsION also incorporates extra modules which allow for additional calculations such as the temperature in the overhead wire, the magnetic field, shortcircuit currents important for reliability, safety and health considerations. TENsION is constantly evolving with new technologies being added with every new project - increasing the accuracy and possibilities for its use in our business with every new client demand. prague is our main city and everyone in the energy business in Czech Republic has offices there - so the new office makes us more visible; closer to clients and competitors. Where projects are located nearer to prague it helps too, although pardubice and prague collaborate on many of our energy projects. prague is also a practical centre for the cross-europe collaboration that s planned (Crossways 17). Many expatriates in Brussels stay in the same apartment block, so we could play football, basketball or tennis and socialise after work - it was all very friendly. My job now is mainly to prepare feasibility studies, basic design and the thermodynamic calculations for projects. a negative, after city-life, was going back to almost a 1hr car journey to work every day. You have to do what feels right for everyone involved and be flexible in terms of meeting the family s needs as well as the company s. But for expats in this region, another challenge is to adjust to the new environment; the heat, the food and culture. But it s not too hard if you re mentally prepared and understand your job requirements and the local rules. What do you see as the advantages? i think expat life gives you an appetite for knowledge, new ideas and learning more about international systems of working. it lets you explore life and gives you the mental strength to face challenges in a professional and personal capacity. What added value does your expatriation deliver to the clients? I have 20+ years of rich and varied experience in the Civil field, among them 8 years working on different types of pp (including Cfpp) in india and abroad. i ve worked on lots of projects in many roles and have both experience and knowledge of modern construction techniques which help the timely completion of a project while respecting the best Safety and Quality standards. i m experienced in preparing tender documentation and also know about global standards and how to apply these to a project. Having lots of exposure to different projects and clients; I m not afraid to present new solutions - and can more quickly deliver on problems. How do you feel returning to Saudi Arabia for the next project? i m excited to work on a new cogeneration pp (another experience) and to meet with some old colleagues and friends. When the majority of people you work with are expats, you develop a strong team spirit - we support each other like family out here. Have your missions held value for you personally? Yes, it s a great honour for me to work as an expat in tractebel engineering. i ve learned a lot and not just in terms of technical aspects but also in terms of experiencing different cultures, ideas, improved communication which helps me improve personally as well as in my career. What is your advice for expatriates? Try to be what you expect from others; for me honesty is most the important asset. But there s also discipline, initiative and empathy. i would say look for your local community so you can share festivals and important times, staying motivated and recharged. read and understand local rules and respect them. register with the local embassy and keep records of important contact numbers. attend any community cultural programs you might enjoy. it all adds up to more friends and more information and a very worthwhile experience.
