The GDF SUEZ Lab Singapore 3 The GDF SUEZ Lab Singapore Developing solutions to meet the energy challenges of Southeast Asia In 2014, GDF SUEZ launched a new laboratory in Singapore to be used as a regional hub for Southeast Asia. The Lab s activities consist in managing R&D projects and providing direct services based on its technological expertise. The lab is a high-level research asset for GDF SUEZ, developing solutions to meet the energy challenges of Southeast Asia and supporting GDF SUEZ s regional business units to help them maintain a high quality of services. THREE KEY TOPICS ARE CURRENTLY ADDRESSED Smart and Distributed Energy for Cities and Islands Industrial Energy Efficiency Gas Technologies A HIGH LEVEL OF EXPERTISE BUILDING ON FOUR KEY AREAS OF EXPERTISE New technologies integration (Digital / Big Data, smart networks, and the Internet of things.) Key energy systems know-how in cities and industries (Buildings energy efficiency, energy storage, power-to-gas energy systems.) Social behavior and environmental impact assessments (Team of sociologists, life cycle analyses, etc.) Expertise in the performance and safety of industrial assets (Gas storage / gas specifications, industrial risk control.)
The GDF SUEZ Lab participates in two important programs in Singapore: the EcoCampus program and the REIDS initiative THE GDF SUEZ LAB HAS BEEN DEVELOPING STRONG PARTNERSHIPS WITH (THE ENERGY LAB OF NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY) SINCE SEPTEMBER 2014: a Memorandum of Understanding was signed in March on various research and academic training topics. The lab is now involved in Nanyang Technological University s flagships projects, working on new ways of generating electricity and using it, with the EcoCampus and REIDS projects. The EcoCampus program of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board and developed with partners: ERI@N (academic) and IDM Fraunhofer (industrial). It consists in a game for students via a digital app to increase NTU s energy efficiency. The REIDS initiative (Renewable Energy Integration Demonstrator in Singapore) aims at developing an off-grid energy solution for islands in Southeast Asia. This will integrate some disruptive new technologies such as power-to-gas and the hydrogen cycle.
The GDF SUEZ Lab Singapore 5 The EcoCampus program and the Powerz app A game for encouraging better use of campus resources (energy, water, and waste) GDF SUEZ WILL PROVIDE The design of the Energy Efficiency game concept: the story, the eco-gestures, community dynamics, incentives, and real feedback on actions. A comprehensive sociological approach: POWERZ was co-designed with 133 NTU students. A specific methodology to evaluate the impact of the solution on the campus s electrical consumption. POWERZ, A COLLECTIVE EXPERIENCE TO IMPROVE ENERGY EFFICIENCY The Energy Research Institute (ERI@N) and the GDF SUEZ Lab Singapore are launching a largescale pilot project, called POWERZ, on the NTU Campus. It is part of a program called EcoCampus, whose aim, among others, is to give to those on the campus the chance to play an active role in the reduction of their environmental footprint. The goal is to reduce by 35% the consumption of resources (energy, water, and waste) by 2020 on the campus. In the game, users are asked to report actions they test to reduce energy consumption (switching off the light, cutting air conditioning, using stairs rather than elevators, etc.), to earn points (competition leads to reducing energy consumption). With this program, NTU is demonstrating its commitment to sustainable development. The goal is to reduce by 35% the consumption of energy, water, and waste by 2020 on the campus. The idea behind POWERZ is to get everyone involved in increasing the energy efficiency of the campus while having fun at the same time. POWERZ is a real team effort, bringing together a game that combines a smartphone virtual experience with practical initiatives on the campus, with users doing their bit to reduce everyday electricity consumption (e.g., air conditioning) on the campus. This unique pilot also has an academic purpose as it will enable ERI@N and GDF SUEZ to learn the impact campusbased users can have on reducing energy consumption. GOALS OF THE EXPERIMENT Educational To raise people s awareness and knowledge about energy efficiency. To trigger a change in people s energy consumption habits. Social To create a social bond between users and the environment to motivate collective achievement. R&D To evaluate the impact of an innovative energy efficiency solution to decrease electricity consumption in buildings. To assess the solution developed during this experiment. Partners
6 The GDF SUEZ Lab Singapore TOGETHER LET S REDUCE OUR ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT! The rules of the game are simple! Your avatar is a flower. This flower is in a virtual garden, which represents the community of Powerz players. Everytime you act in favor of energy efficiency on the campus and report on it through the app, you earn points. The more you report actions that help reduce energy consumption (switching off the light, cutting air-conditioning, using stairs rather than elevators, etc.), the more your flower grows. 18 eco-gestures are proposed, so that people can learn how to reduce their daily energy consumption via different ways. Players can take part in collective challenges and earn rewards, and also level up to become the best energy savers and lead the Powerz community of the campus. With the game app, feelings can be shared about indoor temperature. The feedback is sent to the control room to adapt the air-conditioning level in the campus s buildings. Weekly and monthly feedbacks will keep students and staff updated about the real impact of their efforts. Every time students act in favor of energy efficiency in the campus, they can report in the Powerz app and earn points in the game. Competition drives the right behavior. DURING THE EXPERIMENT, THE IMPACT ON CAMPUS ENERGY CONSUMPTION WILL BE MONITORED AND ANALYZED Identifying trends based on: A set of indicators: a campus building s overall energy consumption, air-conditioning consumption level, electricity in graduate halls, etc. Different frequency levels: daily, weekly and monthly. Looking for what happens in the game (which eco-gestures students report on the Powerz app): All reported actions will be analyzed in line with changes in overall consumption (building per building). Powerz: an artistic design and innovative game concept via a digital interface Flowers representing players displayed on a map of the campus. Interface displayed when a signal to stop using air conditioning is sent. Every time players act in favor of energy efficiency and report it, they earn points. Players can share their feelings about the indoor temperature to send a signal to the control room to reduce it.
The GDF SUEZ Lab Singapore 7 The REIDS Initiative for Southeast Asian Islands A Renewable Energy Integration Demonstrator In 2014, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore announced the building of a hybrid microgrid that combines renewables (wind, solar, and marine energy), fossil fuels (diesel generator sets and gas turbines) and energy storage (power-to-gas). The project is supported by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and the National Environmental Agency (NEA). This project is taking shape with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by a consortium of ten manufacturers including GDF SUEZ. GDF SUEZ PARTICIPATES IN THE REIDS INITIATIVE, BY DEVELOPING THE SPORE PROJECT (SUSTAINABLE POWERING OF OFF-GRID REGIONS) The energy needs of off-grid regions (e.g., islands), focusing on residential and commercial customers. A more sustainable solution with less fuel by: removing or reducing the number of expensive, pollutant diesel generators; building a sustainable solution, using local resources to address local needs in the most efficient way. OUR PROJECT S INNOVATION: THE ENERGY AND POWER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM The project will enable the management of multi-fluid systems (electricity, hydrogen, biogas, and cooling) and different storage capacities. It will make it possible to stabilize microgrids with no or few rotating machines. An energy solution that integrates multi-fluid production, several storage capacities and various consumption facilities, by combining renewable electricity, locally produced fuel (H 2 and Biogas), cold storage, and water production, to address end usages in the most efficient way (e.g., hydrogen production and storage for mobility) overcome intermittency and avoid oversized battery-storage capacities. It will include the demand side management of some semi-industrial building bricks (desalination, cold storage or electric vehicles).
