2 About acept Western Australia s North-West Shelf is home to Australia s largest resource development project. It involves the extraction and processing of petroleum, hydrocarbons, petroleum products (mostly natural gas and condensate) and the export of liquefied natural gas. Located 25 minutes south of Perth, Western Australia, Challenger Institute of Technology s Australian Centre for Energy and Process Training (ACEPT), services the workforce development requirements of companies involved in the North-West Shelf project. Key features of ACEPT include: A fully operational closed loop process train that: Utilises an instrument air unit Separates nitrogen from air Separates oil from water Tank farm for storage of process chemicals Recombines the chemicals for the next training program Process control systems supplied by Honeywell Control room linked to the live process plant A full-scale simulation of the process train developed by Honeywell A Yokogawa simulation of a distillation tower, instrument air, furnaces, heat exchangers, chemical reactor and gas compressors A fully operational closed loop methanol distillation tower Industrial instrumentation training ACEPT is owned and operated by Challenger Institute of Technology on behalf of the Western Australian Government. It has also received considerable financial support from industry. ACEPT offers certificates under the Australian Qualifications Framework as well as short courses designed to meet the needs of industry and individual clients.

3 training At Acept training IS offered IN A VArIety of FORMATS, INCLudING: live training on the process plant Perth Simulation Online, correspondence and classroom-based learning Workplace-based training Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) using workplacebased assessors For those new to the industry, training commences at Certificate II level. Operators working in industry are encouraged to use their workplace systems and procedures for completion of assessments up to the Advanced diploma of process plant Technology. Competency is proven by completing practical assessments in the workplace as well as by demonstrating an understanding of the relevant theory. Workplace-based assessments are conducted by qualified assessors or supervisors who verify and validate assessments. These courses are delivered at ACEPT or in the workplace (or as a combination of both). They may also include RPL. All courses are developed under the Australian Quality Framework, PMA08 Chemical, Hydrocarbons and Oil Refining and/or MEM05 Metals and Engineering package. Certificate III in Process Plant OperatioNS You will be able to work without supervision to operate process trains. Your training will allow you to utilise skills in the following areas: Cryogenic processes, transfer liquids between storage facilities, operate process control systems, operate and monitor compressor systems and equipment. Certificate IV in Process Plant TECHNOLOGY You will graduate with high-level technical training to become a senior operator in the chemical, hydrocarbons and refining industries. Diploma of Process Plant TECHNOLOGY The Diploma level provides advanced technical training to those who operate production plants. You may have completed the Certificate IV in Process Plant Technology or another relevant qualification, or may have significant industry experience without a formal qualification. Advanced Diploma of Process Plant TECHNOLOGY This qualification provides advanced technical training to those in senior roles at production on plants or those who have significant industry experience without a formal qualification. 10 Challenger Institute courses can PROVIde PATHWAYS TO university. On completion of a Certificate IV or diploma, graduates can use their qualification to apply for entry to a wide range of courses at university. Qualifications at the diploma level or advanced diploma level may also provide credit of up to one year advanced standing in a three or four year degree. This can shorten your university studies significantly and save you money. Challenger Institute has a diverse range of advanced standing agreements with both Curtin and Murdoch Universities. 11 Change of trade fuels Adam s ambition Adam Selby s career prospects in the oil and gas industry have been boosted after being named Challenger Institute s Trainee of the Year and Student of the Year. Since completing his traineeship at the institute s Australian Centre for Energy and Process Training (ACEPT), Adam has secured a permanent position as a process plant operator on Woodside s Northern Endeavour platform. A refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanic by trade, Adam duty technician and ultimately supervisory roles, I ll need this additional training. Adam is also keen to achieve a training and assessment qualification, so I can be considered for opportunities as a Workplace Assessor. I have to keep training if I want to push myself further in my career, and I also want to mentor new trainees, so it s good to remind myself what it s like to learn new skills, he said. I have to keep training if I want to push myself further in my career... enrolled at ACEPT to pursue a career in a more challenging work environment. My original trade meant I spent most days working in a reactive service role, where I would be told what the problem was and have to fix it, he said. The ACEPT traineeship offered me an opportunity to develop a more operations-based career that involved troubleshooting and an environment where safety considerations and maintaining a facility s integrity is paramount. Learning the procedures and application of process plant equipment on a modern floating production storage and offloading vessel was one of the highlights of Adam s Certificate III in Process Plant Operations traineeship, as it exposed him to a range of duties in the industry. Adam is particularly appreciative of the support he received from ACEPT s lecturing staff. They taught me more than the operational skills I needed to know, they also introduced me to the tools I needed to plan projects and successfully undertake tasks in a methodical manner, he said. Adam was selected as a winner of the two awards due to his enormous knowledge of and passion for his industry. ACEPT s commitment to hands-on experience in a reallife industry environment allows students to benefit from programs that have been compiled based upon input from industry which meet their requirements for a properly trained workforce. I not only learnt how to control a process plant operation, but I was also involved in utility services, ship ballast control and stability, as well as vessel integrity and hull management, he continued. And by being integrated into a small and highly-skilled team at Woodside, I was able to refine my analytical and logical problem solving skills to determine the cause of and solution to malfunctions. Adam s plans for the future include undertaking further training in order to build on his current skills and ensure he has a solid future in the sector. Woodside s learning management system is mapped to Challenger Institute, which made the process of completing my Certificate III much easier, he explained. And I can now complete the units for the Certificate IV in Process Operations via on-the-job learning and correspondence. If I want to move into panel operation,
