Introduction It costs over 2m a year to run Salisbury Hospice. Salisbury Hospice Charity raises 1.3m of the funding needed to support over 180 people at any one time either in the inpatient unit or out in the community. The fundraising offices are based in Salisbury Hospice and are open from 9am 5pm Monday to Friday. Salisbury Hospice provides palliative care to approximately 1,000 patients per year. Definition of Palliative Care Palliative care is the active holistic care of patients with advanced progressive illness. Management of pain and other symptoms and provision of psychological, social and spiritual support is paramount.. The goal of palliative care is achievement of the best quality of life for patients and their families. The services provided by Salisbury Hospice include: Inpatients The inpatient unit has 10 beds for patients with complex specialist needs. Patients are admitted from both the community and the main hospital and are referred by their GP. Community Palliative Care Team The service offered by the community palliative care team covers a wide area, reaching south as far as Ringwood, north to Upavon, east to Bramshaw and west to Mere. The team provides advice and support to patients, relatives, carers and professional colleagues, working closely with the patient s GP, hospital team, community nurses and other community services to ensure that optimum care is provided. 3
Hospital Palliative Care Team Salisbury Hospice is unique in having a Hospital Palliative Care Team which supports patients within the main hospital building of Salisbury District Hospital. The team provides an outreach service to adult wards in the hospital and staff within the hospital refer to the team for advice on symptom control and emotional support for the individual patient and their families/carers whilst in hospital. Peter Gillam Day Centre Specialist palliative day care provision is offered at the Peter Gillam Day Centre, four days a week. The centre provides social support for both inpatients and patients from the community as well as providing a day of respite for carers. It is a place where patients can relax and take part in a variety of fun activities such as art, music and dance therapies, aromatherapy and reflexology. Family Support Team The Family Support Team helps patients and their families living at home, providing psychological support to help with adjustment to their changed situation in living with a serious illness. A bereavement service led by the Family Support Team and assisted by a team of specially trained bereavement support volunteers ensures relatives continue to be supported. Every two years a time travellers day, based on Winston s Wish (a children s bereavement charity) is organised off-site for young children and teenagers. Education The palliative care team provides training for other health professionals including GPs, district nurses and hospital medical and nursing staff who are dedicated to improving standards of general palliative care. Training and support for carers is also provided. 4
Fundraising Ideas Anything that raises money for the charity is fundraising. The main way to do this is by participating in a sponsored event or challenge or holding an event of your own. Some examples are shown below. Sponsored events These can be events organised by us, independent challenge/adventure companies or you yourself. The Midnight Walk a 10 mile sponsored event organised by the charity. A parachute jump you can organise this yourself or go through a recognised third party to arrange a skydive. We provide you with sponsor forms and help you set up an online fundraising page. A swimathon get together with a group of friends and set yourself a challenge to swim 5 miles. Do this in shifts or over a period of time, the possibilities are endless. Ask everyone you know to sponsor you. Community events Involve friends, neighbours, family...hold a coffee morning. Charge a small amount for coffee and cakes and hold a raffle too. A great way to get together with your friends, increase awareness of the hospice and raise valuable funds. Why not give each of the guests a loose change box to take away with them. Organise a dog walking morning followed by a light lunch. Invite your friends. Ask your employer (or employees) to have a dress down day. For many more ideas look at our A Z of Fundraising Ideas on the next page... 5

A simple guide to creating a successful fundraising event 1 Decide 2 Set what you want to do. Draw on your skills, perhaps expand upon a hobby or a skill you already have. a date. Think carefully about when most people will be available and if there is any other major event on at the same time. Remember organising an event takes time, often longer than you anticipate. 3 Think about where to hold the event. Will there be adequate parking? What if the weather is bad? Plan for all eventualities. 4..Publicise your event. Social networking is an excellent tool for spreading the word. If you are selling tickets consider setting up a committee to help. 5 Tell us about it. We can help publicise your event by adding it to our events page on our website and adding it to the what s on section in the newsletter if appropriate. Links can be included to your fundraising page or contact details. 6..If it is a sponsored event ask us for sponsor forms. We will customise the form for your event. 7 Set up a web-based fundraising page for online donations. You can add photos and write your own personal message. 8 Ask 9 If 10 for our Salisbury Hospice Charity promotional materials. We can supply you with collecting boxes, balloons, leaflets and banners. it is a large event attracting lots of people e.g. a music festival, prepare a press release using the template in this pack. This can be sent to local media outlets such as Spire FM and the Salisbury Journal. Put posters in local shops and businesses. Most people are delighted to help the hospice. Use the poster template which is part of this pack. See page 11 for a Poster Template 7
Tips to maximise sponsorship and donations Ask people to tick the Gift Aid declaration on the sponsor form. For every 1 donated the charity can get an extra 25p. Ask your employer to match your fundraising. Many larger companies have a matched funding policy and will equal what you raise..use your noticeboards and intranet at work to let people know what you are doing and who you are raising funds for. Link your JustGiving page to your Facebook and Twitter accounts...take your sponsor form with you wherever you go and don t be afraid to ask. Every penny counts and soon mounts up. Read our introduction page and be confident in the knowledge you have. Many people think the money they donate is just for extras. Tell them that without fundraising the hospice would not exist! Remember to thank people for their support! After the event Send in your sponsorship money as soon as possible or bring in the money raised from your event. We will produce a thank you poster for you to display showing how much you raised. Let us have any photos from your event. They can be displayed in the news section of the website and may be included in the next newsletter. Put your feet up and congratulate yourself! See page 12 for a Sponsor Form 8
How to set up a JustGiving page You can create your own online sponsor page. It s easy and fun. Just follow the simple instructions and you can have your own JustGiving page complete with photo. You can it to all your friends and get them to donate quickly and easily with a credit or debit card. Link it in to your Facebook page too. Here s how to do it Just go to Click on Make your page. Follow the simple instructions to create an account...type in Salisbury Hospice in the search box at the top of the screen. Salisbury Hospice Charity will be displayed. Click on this...follow the instructions. You can upload your own photo or use a standard one. Some standard words will be there for Salisbury Hospice and you can add your own to personalise it. If you have any difficulties please call us on
