2 What care do you provide? St Joseph s Hospice offers care to people living in North and East London. Our services include nursing and medical care, emotional support, practical advice, physical and psychological therapies, spiritual care (for those who want it) as well as social and creative activities. Everyone affected by a life-limiting condition should be able to live life to the full, to the very end. St Joseph s Hospice cares for and supports people affected by life-limiting conditions and terminal illness. We work closely with people in our community, making sure the care you receive suits your needs. We really listen to what you want, whether that s spending time at the hospice or being supported at home by professionals who can give you the care that you need. We also know that it s not just patients who need our support and that s why we offer a wide range of services to families and carers. All of our services are provided FREE of charge. St Joseph s Hospice is an independent hospice and registered charity. We currently receive around 50% of our funding from the NHS. We rely on the generosity and goodwill of our local community to fund the remaining 7 million of our running costs. Our staff are experts in caring for people who have life-limiting conditions or who are coming to the end of their life, and in supporting families and carers. We provide care in a number of settings at the hospice and in the local community, including: At the hospice in-patient wards respite ward day hospice out-patients clinic in our community spaces. Who can access care? In the community in patient s own homes in care homes in other residential settings. In-patient, day hospice, community-based and out-patients services are available to people living in the City of London and the boroughs of Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham. People living in the surrounding boroughs can also access in-patient services. St Joseph s Hospice services are available to everyone in the communities we serve. 3 Your questions answered Who do you care for? St Joseph s Hospice cares for people aged over 18 years who have a life-limiting condition which cannot be cured, or who have a terminal illness. Many of the people we care for have illnesses such as cancer, chronic lung disease, heart disease or neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) or motor neurone disease (MND). How many people do you care for? Each year, St Joseph s Hospice provides care and support to over 1,700 patients. We also support their families and carers. How big is the Hospice? The Hospice has over 300 staff and more than 400 volunteers who deliver our services. It costs over 15 million to run the hospice every year. We need to raise 7 million each year through charitable donations. Do patients or their families have to pay? No, all of our care is FREE of charge. If you wish to support St Joseph s Hospice you can find out how in the Help us to help others page. What are the in-patient wards like? We have 42 beds in our three wards. Many people who stay on these wards will return home after a period of medical and nursing help. Other people on these wards are very ill and have chosen to spend the last few weeks of their life at the Hospice. Our respite ward offers people an opportunity to come in for a planned break (1-2 weeks) so that we can review their medical needs, help them to maintain their independence and allow both patients and carers to have a break. What if I want to be cared for at home? Our team of experienced clinical nurse specialists from the Community Palliative Care Team (CPCT) visit patients in their own homes. They work with our hospice doctors and supportive care teams, as well as with GPs and community health teams to achieve the best possible care for patients. They get to know our patients and those close to them very well and may be involved in their care for many months. What happens at day hospice? Day hospice is a place where patients can come and spend time with other people in a similar situation and take advantage of the range of hospice services available, such as medical care, physiotherapy, complementary therapies or counselling, for example. Patients take part in a 12-week programme that is tailored to their needs. Do you have out-patient clinics? Yes. If you are well enough to travel into the hospice, we have clinics available Wednesday to Friday. Out-patient appointments will provide you with specialist advice and support and will ensure you are referred to the hospice services you need. What support is available to my friends and family? We have a skilled team offering a range of support for the emotional, practical and spiritual worries that accompany serious illness. Our supportive care team offers practical, social and psychological support to patients and their families throughout their illness, helping them to manage any difficult issues. Our services include a wide range of care such as advice on welfare and benefits, carers support groups, family therapy and complementary therapies such as massage, acupuncture, reflexology and aromatherapy. We also have an extensive bereavement support service which includes a telephone support line, bereavement support groups, family therapy and one-to-one counselling help for adults and children. Family members can also make a referral. Patients can self-refer too. Please contact the patient s GP before you send a referral to the Hospice. If you are making a self-referral, please be aware that we will contact your GP to discuss whether you will benefit from Hospice care. St Joseph s Hospice is a charity and we provide all of our services FREE of charge. We rely on the generosity of our supporters to help us continue our work. You can support St Joseph s Hospice in different ways. Give your time We currently have over 400 volunteers who support the hospice in many different ways. We are always interested to hear from people who can offer their time. Call and ask to speak to the Volunteers Team if you d like to hear more. Give a gift Any donation, large or small, is gratefully received and makes a real difference.
