3 Welcome from the Flight Deck The aero-medical industry has witnessed dramatic changes over the past decades. From the relatively unsophisticated balloon transport of injured soldiers during the 19th century, through the early years of aviation, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, to the present when air medical transport is virtually everywhere in the world. Aerolite lifted off in 1995 and since then has become a leader and trendsetting supplier of state-of-the-art interiors for air medical transport providers. For us, what matters most is life. We are proud of the fact that our equipment helps to save lives on a daily basis. With this brochure we would like to take you on a flight and give you an overview of our modern equipment for helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. 4 Breathless When we got done branding cattle, we were heading back to the trailer, recalls Max, the family s eldest son, who was 13 at the time. I didn t get back on the horse saddle right. With Max clinging precariously to his saddle, the horse bolted. An avid horseman since age three, Max knew to use his legs to hold himself on the horse. But when his shouldehit his father s horse, Max let go. He landed on the rocky ground with a sickening thud. The rest of the family caught up to Max in a heartbeat. His mother Michelle knew immediately that Max was in grave danger. He was spitting up blood, she said, I knew we had to get him medical help quickly. When the Air Life helicopter left Bend, the crew only had a vague sense of where the family was. When we got to the area around Hart Mountain, we knew they were north of us so we started a search pattern explained helicopter pilot Bill Conklin. By the time Air Life arrived, Max s condition was dire, the Air Life respiratory therapist remembers. Working fast, the crew loaded Max into the helicopter and started to give him oxygen. With the rotors still turning the crew asked Max s mom to join them. I didn t dream they would let me go she said. I was really relieved to be able to go with him. As the helicopter lifted off, the Air Life team was hard at work trying to save Max. With seconds ticking Max desperately needed a chest tube to decompress his chest. Knowing a general surgeon was on duty at Harney District Hospital, they decided to stop there. The trauma team at Harney Hospital worked with the Air Life team to stabilize Max. Max s condition was improving fast. Within 24 hours Max was healing and wanted to go home. I suspect without the helicopter, medical capabilities on board and the medical care we were able to give Max quickly, he would not have made it said Michelle.

5 Rotorcraft Air Medical Interiors Mission Profiles become more sophisticated While the public primarily pictures the helicopter landing at a car crash to help a victim with multiple injuries, air medical services have increasingly taken on a variety of new missions over the last decades. Most scene responses are for injuries, but hospital-to-hospital transport is often necessary for critical illnesses such as heart attacks or strokes requiring surgical procedures, acute respiratory problems, burns, pediatric illnesses and neonatal complications, limb reattachments, organ transplants, and complications in high risk pregnancy. 8 We re very grateful that Alexis is such a healthy child. Who doesn t dream of spending a relaxing holiday and being spoiled all around prior to the birth of a child. Nadia und André Utzinger from Cugy in Switzerland, made their dream come true. In December 2004 they and their 18-month-old daughter Sally traveled to the Maldive Islands for a vacation. The married couple had of course made inquiries regarding the possibilities of making such a flight during pregnancy. Nadia was in her sixth month and felt great. Her doctors assured her that she could fly up until the 32nd week of pregnancy, so nothing stood in the way of the Utzingers holiday trip. The first days on Paradise Island were wonderful up to the fifth day, when suddenly strong labor pains started. A speed boat brought Nadia Utzinger to Malé, the capital city. She barely made it to the hospital. Being in the sixth month of pregnancy she gave birth to Alexis, who weighed no more than 1.5 kilograms at that time. Daddy André realized the seriousness of the situation and immediately contacted the TCS emergency center, which assigned Rega with the family s repatriation to Switzerland. A Rega-Jet left Zurich airport on the same day for Malé. On board was a team of nurses from the Children s Hospital in Zurich with an incubator and all the necessary equipment to treat premature infants. It has been almost two years since that premature birth, and today nothing reminds of it. 9 Fixed-Wing Air Medical Interiors The interior of an ambulance jet is specially designed to serve the needs of critically ill patients. In essence, it is a portable intensive care unit (ICU). Some of the air ambulance equipment on board includes a ventilator, defibrillators, oxygen, portable suction units, cardiac monitors, pacemakers, intubation kits, medications, and other routine supplies. The medical team is experienced in critical care and provides the same level of expertise one would expect in a hospital setting. 09

11 Fixed-Wing Air Medical Interiors Intensive Care Unit for Challenger 604 Aerolite designed, manufactured and installed the entire interior for Rega s challenger fleet including the intensive care units (ICU), a crew rest which can be converted into seats, a ramp for loading and unloading patients and crew members, an office and a galley. The main features of the interior include: Transport of up to two ICU patients with full monitoring and respiratory support or 4 stretchers The medical equipment is carried in the bases of the stretcher supports, the monitoring equipment and ventilators, suction units and other equipments are located at the head end of the stretchers To load and unload patients, a special folding and light weight ramp has been designed and integrated Three separate electrical sources were installed with 220 V AC, 28 V DC and 12 V DC A central tank carries more than liters of oxygen, a more than adequate supply for long range flights Medical Room for a wide-body aircraft Aerolite has been chosen to design and manufacture a medical room for a wide-body aircraft. This order marks a continuation of Aerolite s expertise on a similar aircraft. The medical features integrated are similar to an intensive care room found in a hospital. Aerolite not only designs the cabinets for storing the medical equipment but it also takes care of the procurement of these devices and the training of the customer s medical team. Given the tight schedule until completion of the aircraft, Aerolite s approach involves a 1:1 wooden mock-up in which all medical equipment can be installed for handling purposes. This approach has the advantage that it offers the customer a verification of the equipment placement and ergonomics at a very early stage of the project. We took a floor and used it as the foundation for a mock-up, with crew seats, real stretchers and off-set patients. It seemed like the dawn of a new age. I could see it on their faces. After that, we went upstairs and sat around a computer with an engineer. They had an amazing drafting program that could move the interior around in virtual space and keep it in scale. In fact, we could sit as passengers inside the 3D-model of the helicopter, look under the seats, open and close doors and drawers, and change cabinets, drawers and dimensions. 15 15 Design Our in-house design team creates an interior that reflects the customers needs. At this stage it is important that we work together with our customers very closely to fully understand their mission profiles. To help our customers visualize the interiors and elements, our design team utilizes CAD data to build realistic virtual interiors and renderings. Colors, layouts and features can be adjusted and fine-tuned far in advance of fabrication. We are able to build full-size mock-ups for giving a real experience to our customers. Engineering Our engineering group provides everything to design, install and certify custom aircraft interiors, generating specifications and drawings, analyzing stress, weight and balance, testing new products in our in-house facilities and liaising with the authorities for the certification process. We provide complete engineering efforts tofinish your projects on time and on budget. Certification Complete in-house certification capabilities enables Aerolite to be well positioned to support any project through the EASA or FAA processes. Our customers benefit from our complete range of EASA approvals such as DOA (DAS), POA (PMA) and MOA as well as our extensive reservoir of existing Supplemental Type Certificates (STC) for interiors. Production Aerolite s supply chain management is responsible for overseeing and coordinating with selected suppliers. Rigorous quality surveys, supplier audits and surveillance are conducted regularly to ensure that all quality procedures are followed. 16 Installation Our installation team allows Aerolite to provide turn-key completions for our customers. We have installed interiors in most of the European Countries, USA and Japan. Aerolite also installs interiors in the production line of selected helicopter manufacturers. After Sales Services Continued customer focus is carried throughout each project and this support continues after aircraft delivery. Our in-house support team is available to investigate and assist with warranty issues, coordinates and oversees repairs and supply of spare parts. Our AOG desk provides continuous 24 / 7 spares supply, repair and overhaul support services throughout the lifecycle of the product.
