2 RhOME: a home for Rome ONCE AGAIN ROMA TRE UNIVERSITY IS THE UNIQUE ITALIAN TEAM RIGHFULLY TAKING PART TO SOLAR DECATHLON COMPETITION WITH RHOME FOR DENCITY PROJECT Tor Fiscale current condition Rome, November 1st Density, affordability, transportability and sobriety. These are the first important themes of the new edition of the Solar Decathlon, the bio-architecture olympic games. RhOME, the only italian green project participating in the challenge with other 19 teams from all over the world. After the bronze medal gained with MED in Italy during the last edition in 2012 in Madrid, the team of Università di, lead again by Chiara Tonelli, passed the selections to participate in the event next july in Versailles. 3 Following the competition guidelines, the project has to be strongly linked to territory. From this came the decision to think about the capital starting from the name: RhOME - a home for ROME - the starting point to rethink about the urban suburbs in a sustainable way. Flexible PV panels integrated to a moving shading system, which are mainly used in sailing boats. A parapet which produces hot water cooling around it. Total insulation of the skin of the house, because it s good to consume less energy even if it is produced by renewable systems. RhOME produces more than it consumes: eight times more than a C class house and almost one time and a half more than a A+ class. The house is for a dense city, as the name states, RhOME for dencity, and it will produce energy for the entire district. The Faculty Advisor Chiara Tonelli speaks about the project: The RhOME housing proposal aims to develop a zero impact architectural project, that produces more energy than it consumes, but also seeks to free the archeological remains (like the aqueducts) in roman suburbs where most of the buildings are the result of unauthorized construction. A new urban aggregation made by housing units powered by renewable energy. For the next edition of Solar Decathlon the theme of the city acquires more importance. The emphasis decreases on energy production, while the idea of efficiency and sustainability increases, both applicated to material production processes, but also to mobility and living comfort issues. The life quality of the district and the interpersonal relationships progress in a regeneration course that influences the social features. Another key point is the choice to re-densify a chosen area of Rome, increasing square and cubic meters per hectare occupying new public soil, but also the number of dwellings in the main area, offering small dimension appartement (that nowadays the city doesn t offer) to satisfy the needs of young couples and temporary inhabitants. The main benefits consist in the energetic and economic saving, the protection of the unbuilt territory, the preexisting infrastructures and the optimization of the transport system, the inhabitants security and the improvement of social relationships. Experimentally we apply this concepts on two different urban areas, that both represent a typicity of italian metropolis and towns. The first is the periphery that in Rome reveals two singularities: archeological presences and illegal buildings built next to ancient remains. The latter are the dismissed railway areas, which are often in the city centers of the main italian towns. These two tissues are reconnected by five storied wooden buildings where the social interaction is the main aim. High passive behaviour features, natural materials, renewability, reutilization and recycling are the main guidelines of the project. The flats sizes vary and are mainly addressed to couples, singles, city users and temporary inhabitants which represent the new building demand. Thanks to a particular modularity, the dwellings dimension allows a flexibility degree to design a mixing of typologies which are affordable for everyone. The arrangement of the buildings in the new district can release the ancient remains, like the roman aqueduct, and design new public spaces that promote social relationships between inhabitants. The turned up ground level of the whole estate allows a visual connection with the surrounding landscape. At the same time the loggias of every apartment constitute an element of continuity between outside and inside. exterior view

12 COLLABORATING INSTITUTIONS University: the Departments involved in the project are those of, Economy and. Here below you can find the specific role for every departments: - Department of : it manages the entire investigation/design/building process, it also develops the architectural, energy and technological aspects and assembly, and provides the informatics support for digital systems. It assesses the construction, maintenance and running costs and the urban topics; - Department of Management Studies: it develops the business plan and the marketing and fundraising projects. - Department of : it s focused on the active energy strategy identifying the most appropriate solutions for plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems. Solar Decathlon provides a disbursement of financial assistance granted to the teams equal to SPONSORING COMPANIES The team obtained a partnership with Rubner Haus as technical main sponsor, an international group that in the last 80 years and over has focused its core business on the wood material. Rubner operates in the wood industry, wood building construction and wood homes doors and will operate in order to help the team in the construction of the house prototype, with both materials and know-how. It provide both technical support and construction material, for a value of about 100,000. Rhome team already subscribed a sponsorship contract with Daikin, a world leader company in conditioning and heating systems for residential, retail and industrial purposes and it is a manager of energy company, working to solve energetic building performances. It supports the team with a financial contribution of 50,000, with consultancy on mechanical systems and with heat pump delivery. Another company which is already supporting us is CGA Technologies, worldwide leader in the production of aluminum heat exchangers, for the refrigeration industry with its patented Roll Bond technology that gained international leadership thanks to the efficiency and reliability of their panels. CGA enters in partnership with the Portuguese Energie Est Lda, a worldwide leader with a longstanding experience in development and installation of Thermodynamic solar systems operating in 30 countries, with recognition of status of SME Leader and SME Excellence. Plus the technical support, CGA and Energie Est contribute with 22,820. Demode by Valcucine will provide for kitchen appliances and dining room furniture of our house for a value of about 25,000. Solbian Energie Alternative will support our team. The company s goal is to produce innovative photovoltaic panels in order to expand the scope of their applicability to sectors where lightweight, flexibility and efficiency are fundamental requirements. The characteristics of these flexible photovoltaic panels allow the production of energy from the sun, wherever there is a need, even in extreme conditions: marine, electric mobility, caravans, trekking and in special building-integrated architectural situations. Solbian will provide for photovoltaic panels and consultants for a value of about 25,000. Schneider Electric will provide for electrical system of our house for a value of about 25,000. SUPPORTING PARTNERS The university of La Sapienza, with its Interior Design Department, will help the team with interiors and furnitures design of the house. CEFME CTP will collaborate with RhOME in Safety Plan and Site operation plan and will organize some certified course for the team components.
