User Services Information User Services provides support for campus computers, network resources, and computer accounts. The staff offices and the Help Desk service counter are located in Cayan Library. IT Help Desk Phone: E- mail: helpdesk@sunyit.edu Web system: (login with SITNet ID) SUNYIT E- mail SUNY Poly e- mail is the official electronic communication channel for the college. Students are required to SUNY Poly e- mail for college related communications with offices, staff and faculty. Refer to Official SUNY Poly Communications for more information. Computer Labs Open computer labs (both Windows and Macintosh) are available for students to use. Some departments have their own specialized computer labs as well. Please contact your department chair of program coordinator to find out more about departmental labs. Classroom labs are also available. If you need to have your class in a computer classroom and have not been scheduled in one, please contact the Registrar s office. Classroom Instructor Stations Most classrooms on campus have an instructor station and projector. Many also have multimedia capability to enable you to connect your laptop to the presentation system as well as via a standard VGA and mini- stereo plug for your particular laptop. 2
3 Connections instructions are provided in each room. Before classes begin, you are encouraged to visit your classroom and try out the equipment to make sure you have everything you need. Online Collaboration Tools Collaborate provides a comprehensive online learning and collaboration platform designed specifically for education. If you are interested in using this tool, contact the IT Help Desk. ANGEL Learning Management System Blackboard Learn replaced ANGEL for courses and groups (organizations) at the end of the spring 2015 semester. ANGEL is available for students finishing coursework from spring 2015 incomplete and IP grades until October 22, 2015; and to instructors for grading coursework from incomplete and IP grades, for migrating content from ANGEL courses and groups through October 31, Request migration shells for ANGEL courses and groups via IT Support request (helpdesk.sunyit.edu). Blackboard Learning Management System The Open SUNY Network operates and manages the Blackboard LMS system used for SUNY Poly courses. Campus specific operations are managed and supported by the Registrar s office and ITS departments. Things Instructors Need to Know about Blackboard Courses All courses on the schedule receive a Blackboard course. All online and hybrid courses use Blackboard, but not all traditional courses do. Course naming conventions Individual semester courses: TERM YYYY: SubjCrs- Sec Course Title e.g. Fall 2015: ACC386-35W Intermediate Accountng II Cross- listed (merged roster) courses: TERM YYYY: SubjCrse- Sec_SubjCrse- Sec e.g. Fall 2015: CTC222-01_MTC Banner- Blackboard processing - Blackboard is updated twice daily from Banner in the 12 pm and 5 pm time frame. New aspects of Banner- Blackboard processing and management include instructor changes, merged roster courses and requests to add course participant. All result in a change for faculty in how courses are prepped for the semester and how requests for merged roster courses and for adding a participant to a course are requested. Instructor changes Course instructor changes are automatically updated in the LMS (i.e. Blackboard). Instructors are urged to use development shells to get their course ready for the semester instead of doing so in the actual semester course. The content can be copied into the semester course. Development courses can be reused for subsequent semesters or new development shells can be requested at any time with an IT Support ticket (helpdesk.sunyit.edu). Merged roster courses All requests for merged roster courses will be handled by the Registrar s office via the Blackboard Section Consolidation Request. In future, the request form can be found at under the Faculty Forms section. Course management - Instructors need to enable Statistics tracking to monitor course activity and to capture the last date of attendance. Instructors need to back up their courses regularly during the development phases and while the course is running, and export and archive the course when the semester is finished. Student access to courses Early student access to online and hybrid courses has been discontinued. Student access begins on the first day of the Part of Term and ends 30 days after the course ends. Communications with students prior to the official start date can be achieved via . (Instructions to e- mail students) 3
4 Instructors now have the ability to extend student access to their within the Blackboard course. (Instructions to extend course access). Additional Blackboard Information and Resources Visit technology/ for additional information and resources for Blackboard, the migration and other instructional technologies. Two self- paced courses are available for faculty for self- enrollment (instructions): Introduction to Blackboard Learn, and Intermediate Blackboard Learn Information for students about Blackboard is at Student questions about the migration to Bb is posted on that page. Instructional Technology Services technology/ The instructional technologist works with faculty to integrate technology into the classroom - - both actual and virtual/online - - that will enhance student learning and make classes more dynamic. You are welcome to stop his office, or e- mail him or submit a service request at Kevin Volo, , L146 Cayan Library, volok@sunyit.edu. Services available include: Partner with faculty in how to they can use technology to enhance student learning. Support online and hybrid courses through the use of the course management system (Blackboard), development of audio- visual learning objects, and exploring new technologies. Coordinate training efforts for faculty and students in the use of technology. Manage and support the institution's online synchronous learning environment (Collaborate). Develop tutorials and other training materials. As requested by faculty, assist in assessing effectiveness of course materials for online and hybrid classes. Coordinate and deliver faculty training and development events with User Services, Open SUNY Education and the SUNY Center for Professional Development (SUNY CPE). Details about scheduled events are sent to faculty via SUN Poly e- mail. Faculty Workshops Throughout the semester we will be offering several workshops that cover a variety of topics, from how to use social media in the classroom to course development. We will also be offering several classes that cover the mechanics of using Blackboard. The schedule of workshops run by Open SUNY Education and SUNY CPE that faculty can sign up for will be posted. You can find the schedule of classes in several places. They are: Workshop Registration technology/event- registration/ Technologist Blog technology/ The technologist blog is updated weekly, and contains tutorials on Blackboard, Collaborate, other new and existing educational technologies, as well as fun videos and articles. On the blog you can also find interesting ideas on how to integrate social media into your class. 4
