2 Welcome to e-learning! e- Learning courses offer convenience and flexibility to busy, adult learners. We provide students with the same quality courses offered on- campus without the classroom attendance. We are accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and operate on a 15- week semester schedule (Fall, Winter, Spring/Summer). Three common misconceptions about e-learning: I can take this class and do the work whenever I want. Generally, e- Learning is not open enrollment or open entry/open exit. The courses follow the college semester calendar with starting and ending dates, testing period dates, and homework assignment dates. I can do it all on the Internet. It is not all online. We also offer courses using CDs/DVDs, independent study, and multi- media technology as identified by section codes. This will be so easy! It is not an easier method of learning than traditional, in- the- classroom courses. You will need to be a self- motivated, independent learner to be successful. What is Blackboard? Blackboard is an Internet course content management system. Faculty place their course materials at the website, and students access their online courses there. Please check the Blackboard Browser Support page at for compatibility information. How does an e-learning course work? IMPORTANT: To better ensure student success in e- Learning courses, students MUST enroll in and pass a DLES prep session (DLES 100/101) prior to taking any IMM, CMM or WWW designated e- Learning courses. These sessions are offered periodically throughout the year. Check the e- Learning Highlights Page at learning.mcc.edu/news.shtml for current information. 1. Register Online (WebAdvisor) or in person at Registration, Counseling or Advising- - not the e- Learning office. 2. Sign up for a Start- Up Session online at and click on the start- up tab. This is an opportunity for e- Learners to meet their instructor and obtain a better understanding of what is expected from them for this course. You will receive pertinent material for your class at this session. If you cannot make the on campus Start- Up Session, you may stop in the e- Learning Office for this material AFTER the sessions are over. * We highly recommend that you attend the Start- Up Session. 3. Purchase textbook and other materials from the bookstore (or 4. Start coursework for CMM & IMM (multi- media delivery) sections by checking your syllabus to see what technologies/media besides Internet access that your course will use. Obtain material from the Viewing/Listening/Testing Center (VLTC): DVDs, CD ROMs, etc. DLT (telecourse) sections by viewing or checking out DVDs PRT (print- based) sections by following syllabus instructions to complete your text- book assignments. 5. WWW (online) sections: Go toblackboard.mcc.edu. Using the MCC Student Computer Resource Guide, you can learn how to obtain your Blackboard login information Follow your syllabus Read the textbook View the materials or visit the Site Do the homework Take the exams

3 Use this start- up checklist: Printed class schedule Syllabus Textbooks Mott College ID card CMM & IMM: check syllabus DLT: videotapes/dvds PRT: textbook WWW: Internet access How do I register for an e-learning course? You register for e- Learning courses the same way that you register for on- campus classes- - on WebAdvisor or in person. All the same rules apply. You must be admitted, attend an MCC new student orientation, and take all applicable placement tests. All prerequisites for courses apply. You may also register at all Extension Centers. Remember: CMM, IMM or WWW students MUST complete the DLES course successfully to enroll in these classes. Are e-learning courses easier? Their advantages are convenience and flexibility, not simplicity. e- Learners are typically working adults, often with both family commitments and jobs, who cannot easily attend campus classes delivered in the traditional face- to- face mode of instruction. e- Learning courses cover the same material and require just as many hours of work as the same course taught in a classroom. Moreover, the courses require independent study skills such as good reading skills, self- discipline, good time management and motivation. such as the delivery method of the specific course and your home equipment. Reasons for coming to campus throughout the semester may include: Register Purchase textbooks and other materials Attend e- Learning Start- Up Session View/checkout/return instructional materials Attend review sessions Take exams Use campus computers or other equipment Why is this e-learning course full? Even though a course offered through e- Learning doesn t use physical space in a classroom, there are limits to the number of students that the professor can teach. Your professor grades papers, homework and tests, and, also, answers your questions one- on- one. The personal attention takes more time than addressing questions in a classroom. As an online student, will I have to go online at certain times? The courses are located at the Blackboard website (blackboard.mcc.edu) and are open at all times during the semester dates. Some instructors initiate Live Chats and therefore with those there will be specific times that you may be required to be online. Your instructor may posts information on Blackboard, including testing dates and assignment due dates. There may be threaded discussion, but you don t meet with your class online on a specific date or time, unless your instructor has indicated you do so. e- Learning students are: Self- disciplined Highly- motivated Independent Willing to take on new challenges Will I have to come to campus? Probably. MCC s e- Learning program is not campus- free. How often depends on factors

4 e-learning Information Academic Probation Please note that students on Academic Probation are not eligible to enroll in any e- Learning sections. Address / Change of Address If you have moved recently, check your address on the college records and, if necessary change your address at the Registration Office located on the lower level of the Prahl Center. To do this, you must present a valid photo ID (driver s license, State of Michigan ID card, etc.). The address form inside the start- up packet is for the e- Learning office use only. Your correct address is very important as additional communications will be mailed to you during the semester. Assignments / Homework Refer to your syllabus- - most instructors give very specific instructions for submitting assignments. The options for submitting your work are: Turning in at the e- Learning Office, CM2124. The e- Learning staff is happy to receive your assignments unless the instructor has clearly indicated that another method of submission is required. All papers must be clearly marked with your name, course, instructor and assignment number. Your assignment will be date stamped as received and forwarded to your instructor. In the event that the office is locked, there is a drop slot for assignments. The e- Learning Office will date stamp deposited material with the date prior to the lock up. Turning in at the Testing Center. Some instructors require that assignments be turned in at the Testing Center at the time you report to take your exams. Check your course outline/syllabus for your instructor s requirement. Highlights Page e- Learning has incorporated a Highlights Page on our website elearning.mcc.edu. This provides, information about your class(es), such as the review and test schedules, instructor notes, changes, Testing Center, Prepatory course and general information about e- Learning information. Attendance The federal government requires the college to report absences. This includes e- Learning classes. There are several measurements of attendance in e- Learning classes, including coming to the start- up meeting, turning in assignments, taking exams, participating in online discussions. Read your syllabus for your instructor s attendance policy. You may jeopardize your financial aid if you don t attend your e- Learning class. Blackboard Blackboard is an Internet course content management system. Faculty may place their supplemental course materials at the website, and students access their online courses there. Please check the Blackboard Browser Support page at for compatibility information. Blackboard accounts are created for students 24 to 48 hours after registration; however, they are not accessible to students until the semester starts. You activate your account by following the link to activate your account at the blackboard.mcc.edu website. Follow the instructions to obtain your username and password. After activating your account, you will just log in the next time you go to Blackboard. It is very important to LOG OUT when you are finished. If you are registered in more than one class, you will only need to activate your Blackboard account once and all your courses will be available to you. To do your coursework, you do not have to

5 meet online at specific times. The information is always available and updated by your instructor regularly. Exams taken on Blackboard, however, will only be available during the testing period established by your instructor. Some instructors require testing at the VLTC- - check your syllabus. Class Schedule You are required to present a printed class schedule to pick up start- up packets from the e- Learning office to check out instructional materials from the VLTC to take any e- Learning exams in the VLTC. If you need to use the VLTC to finish the work for a course for which you have an Incomplete, you will need to provide a transcript or other grade sheet showing the I grade. A copy of the Incomplete Contract between you and the Instructor is preferable. You can print your schedule from any computer with Internet access from MCC s main Web page, WebAdvisor, then My Schedule. If you re a new student and don t have your MCC ID card, yet, your schedule will allow use of open computer labs for the first two weeks of the semester (along with a photo ID) will be given a temporary barcode by the VLTC if you need to check out materials. You should also refer to your schedule when signing up for your start- up session and when purchasing your textbooks. Computer Labs Mott Community College provides computer labs as a service to all its students and they are especially important to e- Learning students. Computer labs are open on a walk- in basis. Please note that the workers in the labs are not tutors, but student workers who monitor the usage of the labs and make sure the computers are operating. The Viewing, Listening, & Testing Center is your source for media and testing. Expect to come to campus to check out your materials and possibly take exams depending on the course. Concern Form This form is used if you have a problem with some aspect of your e- Learning experience. This is not an academic complaint form- - academic complaints are handled by the division offices. The concern form must be picked up in the e- Learning office. Consent Form The address & consent form in your Start- Up Packet gives your permission for your instructor and the e- Learning office to mail academic information to your home, or give that information to you over the phone, leave messages on your phone or by . These are all fairly public ways to give you private information. DLT Students e- Learning Telecourses are delivered by video programs on DVDs or CD videos; many are produced by MCC Professors. You follow the syllabus, watch the media, read the textbooks, do homework assignments and come to campus to take tests. Start-Up Sessions Start- Up Sessions are conducted by your instructor specifically for their individual course. It is similar to the first class meeting of a traditional, on- campus course. The meeting schedule is listed online at learning.mcc.edu/e- Learning.mcc.edu and is also posted outside the e- Learning Office, CM2124. You may sign up online at e- Learning.mcc.edu then click Start Up Session. The average session takes one hour. Your class meets with the instructor and receives a course syllabus and information for the entire semester. The instructor explains course requirements and procedures, and if the course uses Blackboard, will take you on a virtual tour of the website. What if I Miss a Start-Up Session? If you cannot make the start- up session, the e- Learning office will have printed information available once all the sessions for that class are over. All e- Learning faculty are requested to provide alternatives to their face- to- face start- up sessions. If there is start- up media, they are available for viewing (not checkout) in the Viewing, Listening, & Testing Center (VLTC). Online courses may have start- up information on Blackboard. Student Instructor Evaluation Forms Once during a scholastic year (Fall or Winter), students evaluate their instructor by completing the Student Instructor Evaluation Form. On campus students complete the evaluation form in class. However, e- Learning students either fill out the form in the VLTC after taking the final exam, receive the form in the mail with a return envelope or complete the form online. Regardless of how the forms are presented to you, please take time to complete them. The evaluations are important to the improvement of e- Learning courses and overall program. Tests & Test Scores Test Schedule: Refer to your individual course outline or syllabus for your test schedule and method of assessment. Some instructors don t require exams, some use the VLTC, others use Blackboard. Test Scores: Check your syllabus to see how your instructor will provide your grades. For some of the courses, leave a pre- stamped, self- addressed postcard or envelope at the VLTC when you finish taking your exams. Some instructors automatically mail your tests to you. Grades for online courses will be on Blackboard. Textbooks A textbook and often a study guide or manual is required for each e- Learning course. Please be sure to read through your syllabus that lists the required texts and any other required or optional materials. Textbooks are available for purchase at
