The need for trained safety professionals will continue to expand, as public awareness of safety and environmental issues increases. In addition to job openings from industry growth, positions will also arise from the need to replace workers who transfer to other occupations, retire, or leave for other reasons. 3 THE BASIC PROGRAM CERTIFICATE The online Occupational Safety program provides students a thorough education in the growing field of safety and prepares them for entry level safety positions in a variety of industries. The program curriculum includes: hazard assessment in the workplace; applying regulatory requirements and industry best practices; safety training; cost analysis and budgeting; and general safety management. Upon completion of the SAFE courses (18 credit hours), students will earn an Occupational Safety certificate. Certificate completion indicates basic safety knowledge, and prepares students to become competent safety professionals. Like the AAS degree, the certificate is earned online, affording flexibility for the working student. CORE CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS Credits for SJC General Education and Career Focus Classes may be earned either online or by conventional classes. The approved TEEX CSHO can count for 18 credit hours towards the Career Focus Classes. ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE Degree students seeking an AAS in Occupational Safety can receive 18 credit hours for a completed TEEX-Certified Safety Health Official (TM) (CSHO) certificate. Students in the process of completing the CSHO may concurrently enroll in the Occupational Safety program; they will receive the 18 credit hours when they have completed a CSHO. Students without the CSHO are also eligible to enroll in the program; they can select 18 credit hours of career field classes in lieu of the CSHO. Being able to take the courses online also provided me with a great deal of flexibility. I was able to work and had the convenience of taking the classes around my schedule. Thanks to the awesome instructors and classes at San Juan College, I now have an exciting job that offers room for growth, great hours and pay in a positive work environment.
