3 ADMISSION INFORMATION In order to qualify for admission to any of Coastal Carolina Community College s Early Childhood Education full-time day or part-time evening programs, a candidate will complete four (4) steps: 1. Submit an application to the Admissions Office. 2. Submit official transcript(s) to the Admissions Office. - High school/ged - All colleges/schools attended after high school 3. Take a placement test. 4. Visit an academic counselor. SEMESTER DATES FALL SEMESTER: SPRING SEMESTER: SUMMER SEMESTER: AUG DEC JAN MAY MAY - AUG 1
4 PROGRAM NOTES Students are required to pass criminal background checks for field experiences in the program. The background check will be the responsibility of the student. Any candidate who desires to enroll in the Early Childhood Education Program or take EDU 119, must take one of the following placement tests and meet minimum combined reading and writing placement test scores or successfully complete DRE 096. NCDAP COMPASS ASSET SAT ACT ACCUPLACER/CPT 117 or 85 or 62 or 1040 or 43 or 92 Candidates who do not meet the prerequisite(s) for a course must successfully complete the appropriate developmental course(s) recommended by the placement test. Candidates may review in the Academic Studies Center and retake the placement test to improve their score. In order to enroll in the Associate in Applied Science Degree program, students must successfully complete or place out of DMA 010 (or higher). The Early Childhood Practicum courses require time in childcare settings and may require bending, lifting, squatting and standing. Please discuss any limitations with your instructor or academic counselor prior to registering for these courses. All courses from the Early Childhood Education Certificate Program (C55220) will transfer into the diploma program. Candidates may receive credit for equivalent courses taken at another accredited institution upon the official evaluation of transcripts. 2
5 CURRICULUM DESCRIPTION The Early Childhood Education curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from infancy through middle childhood in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories with practice in actual settings with young children under the supervision of qualified teachers. Coursework includes child growth and development; physical/nutritional needs of children; care and guidance of children; and communication skills with families and children. Students will foster the cognitive/language, physical/motor, social/emotional, and creative development of young children. Graduates are prepared to plan and implement developmentally appropriate programs in early childhood settings. Employment opportunities include child development and child care programs; preschools; public and private schools; recreational centers; Head Start programs and school age programs. Coastal Carolina Community College offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree, a Diploma, and four Certificates. The appropriate coursework for each is listed below. Course work includes child growth/development; physical/nutritional needs of school-age children; care and guidance of school-age children; and communication skills with parents and children. Students will foster the cognitive/language, physical/motor, social/emotional, and creative development of school-age populations. Graduates are prepared to plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities in school-age environments. Employment opportunities include school-age teaching or school-age administration positions in child care/development programs, group leaders, before and after school programs, recreational centers and other programs that work with school-age populations.
