2 Career Connections offered at the Mahaska County Career Academy Program Description Career Connections is an emerging dynamic partnership between Indian Hills Community College and area high schools. High school juniors and seniors are able to earn college credit by enrolling in courses taught in their community or on an Indian Hills campus. Career Connections features career-focused college credit courses offered at no charge to the student. The academy, located at Webster School at 508 South 7th Street in Oskaloosa, offers programs in Computer Networks and Security, Engineering and Technology and Health Sciences. Career Connections provides students with a framework of courses that will prepare them to complete Associate of Applied Science degrees in Computer Networks and Security, Computer Software Development, Digital Forensics, Electronics Engineering Technology, Laser/Electro-Optics Technology, Robotics/Automation Technology and several Health Sciences programs. Students will take Career Connections courses either in the morning or afternoon and will attend their high school classes during the opposite time block. In most cases, students will be able to earn their degree at Indian Hills with only one more year of study after their high school graduation. 7 Frequently Asked Questions Why Should I take College Credit Courses? * To earn advanced standing at your college. Some students have graduated high school with more than 30 college credits. * To prepare for college by starting the transition to college level work. * To strengthen your college application. * To shorten the time it would take to complete your college degree, to allow you to have a lighter load your first two semesters at college or to make it easier to pursue a double major at college. * To explore your career interests. Does my high school offer Concurrent Enrollment? Every high school offers a different set of Concurrent Enrollment courses. Check out our list of course offerings by school to see what your options are. Is Concurrent Enrollment transferable? Concurrent Enrollment gives you real college credit with a college transcript. If seeking a bachelor s degree, up to 16 hours of career/technical credit can be used as elective credit toward a degree at a Regents institution. Always contact the college of your choice to seek how the credit you have earned will transfer. How do I pay for courses? Approved courses are paid for through an agreement between Indian Hills Community College and your school district. Are there fees that I may be responsible for? It depends on what your goals are by enrolling in Career Connections. Textbooks are provided, but may be purchased upon completing courses. Students may want to take the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) examination. The CNA registry examination fee is $135. Immunizations and a physical examination are required in courses with a clinical component. Students enrolled in courses with a clinical experience in a health care facility will be required to have a background check. Fees may apply for background checks, physical examinations and immunizations.
