3 National Instruments Eastern Europe Summer ing Internship The National Instruments internship program is designed for engineering university students with strong leadership qualities who are interested in applying their engineering knowledge to practical technical customer needs. 4 Innovation for Design, Test and Control What Do Our Customers Do with NI Technology? Each year more than 35,000 companies base their system designs on National Instruments products to maximize efficiency and reduce time to market. In hundreds of industries and thousands of applications, the world s most innovative companies use the NI graphical system design platform to create next-generation automated test systems, control critical machine operations, and quickly design sophisticated embedded systems. Designing and testing increasingly complex products to meet tight time-to-market demands requires a highly efficient, tightly integrated platform. The National Instruments graphical system design platform for test, control, and embedded design spans the entire product design cycle, dramatically increasing efficiency and improving the bottom line of applications on Earth and in space. Controlling the World s Largest Particle Accelerator A particle accelerator produces head-on collisions between particle beams traveling at nearly the speed of light; a beam that travels off course can cause catastrophic damage. To ensure precise timing, accuracy, and reliability, CERN installed 110 collimators using PXI FPGA reconfi gurable I/O devices, LabVIEW, and NI SoftMotion software. CERN achieved millisecond synchronization to 600 stepper motors to meet strict application requirements while reducing development costs and time. Testing NASA s Next-Generation Space Telescope A critical component of the James Webb Space Telescope, NASA s successor to Hubble, is the near Infrared Spectrograph, a programmable transmission mask equipped with 250,000 microshutters designed to observe distant galaxies. To ensure system longevity and reliability during space deployment, NASA contracted Mink Hollow Systems to develop a custom test and control algorithm using LabVIEW FPGA software and PXI reconfi gurable I/O devices that synchronously opens and closes the microshutters 240 times per minute while providing design feedback and estimating the life of each unit. The NI graphical system design platform accelerates the development of any system that needs measurement and control. With this flexible platform, engineers can scale from design to test and from small to large systems while reusing tools and IP and leveraging commercially available technology for optimum performance. Highly productive software, coupled with modular, reconfigurable hardware, simplifies the ever-increasing complexity of systems at multiple levels, including unprecedented visualization of system timing. To address growing concern over climate changes and soaring energy prices, engineers and scientists are increasingly focused on improving products and processes. NI is helping drive innovation in green engineering by providing tools that empower engineers to measure and understand real-world data and then fix problems by developing more efficient products and technologies. NI complements its industry-leading software and hardware with an extensive collection of services and support solutions from the planning and development phases through deployment and ongoing maintenance. Measurement on Fusion Plasmas of a Tokamak COMPASS A tokamak is a machine that can sustain high-temperature and high-density plasma using a magnetic field. To research and control plasma behavior and sustain its equilibrium, a set of diagnostic tools are needed. To create a complete fusion plasma measurement system that can be updated in the future as necessary, the solution was to use NI LabVIEW software and PXI hardware.
