1 OCTOBER 4th -7th 2012 FRENCH FINDS Dear festival guest! A festival is a celebration! We hope the audience will agree with us musicians in this. All the musicians leave their usual ensembles, usual musical forms are broken up and everyone get together to put things together in new ways. When the music merges with other arts and musical pairing and sparring is in focus - sparks of something new will arise. A spontaneity, a vivacitet where the tendency to rely on old and tired habits are no longer an option. It is classical music on the edge. Classic Days is greatly influenced by an experience in the moment, an expression that is unique - which only happens once in this exact way with just this year s unique constellation of participants during the climes of Western Jutland. This year the focus is on France because of the 150-anniversary of Claude Debussy s birth. I hope and believe sparks from the vast, beautiful country to the south leap in our festival and contribute to see our festival as a celebration by both cast and audience - and the whole city of Holstebro. 2 TUESDAY OCTOBER 2 THROUGH THURSDAY OCTOBER 4, 10:30 AM, HOLSTEBRO ART MUSEUM ART, MUSIC AND FRENCH FAIRYTALES 200 children from Holstebro s kindergartens are invited to meet art, music and folktales from France. Performers: Story Telling Theatre of Western Jutland by Ingrid Hvass. Basic Course in Music (MGK) The Writers Line from the Danish Talent Academy. Peter Haarby will present select graphic works. For invited kindergartens THURSDAY OCTOBER 4, 4-5 PM, THE THEATRE AUDITORIUM AU CLAIR DE LA LUNE Moon, sun, planets and French music in the interactive children s project Au clair de la lune with 250 school children and students from MGK and the Orkesterefterskole conducted by Michael Bojesen, arranged/composed and accompanied by Jakob Lorentzen. For the occasion HRH Prince Consort Henrik s poem Stjernerne (the stars) has been set to music by Jakob Lorentzen. Classical Days musicians on harp, flute, clarinet and a string quartet will play, and the Royal Ballet School, Holstebro, will also be on stage. Admission Dkr. 75. Born into and raised in an old family in the heart of the Champagne District, France, Xavier de Mentque has brought his own champagne which he will talk about and which can be sampled. THURSDAY OCTOBER 4, 8 PM, KNUDSENS POETRY ON A THURSDAY. FRANCE IN MUSIC AND POETRY. OPENING EVENT. His Royal Highness Prince Consort Henrik will recite from his own poems. French music played by Classical Days musicians and the Odin Theatre House Orchestra. Poem of the month, Omar Khajjam and more. In the foyer you can taste/buy French specialities in wine, cheese and chocolate and books. A glass of champagne served by the wine maker Xavier de Mentque is included in the ticket. LECTURE BY BJARNE MØRUP. In 2012 the 150th anniversary of French composer Claude Debussy is celebrated around the world. Bjarne Mørup will discuss why Debussy is called an impressionist composer. Soprano Christine Marstrand and pianist Tove Lønskov will give a musical lecture on French writer Marcel Proust ( ). The afternoon s programme on music and visual art in Proust s universe is interlaced with pictures by the painters mentioned in Proust s body of work. We will also hear songs by the composers Proust loved, such as Claude Debussy, Reynaldo Hahn, César Franck and Gabriel Fauré. Arranged by Nr. Vosborg. Admission, including coffee and cake, Dkr Tickets at the door. SATURDAY OCTOBER 6, 7:30 PM. KNUDSENS AN EXUBERANT FINALE WITH A WORLD PREMIERE. The century of the aeroplane has its own music. (Debussy) French composer Debussy would be 150 this year, and the festival s festive finale starts in the year of his birth, 1862, and follows France s lyrical and poetic road up to today with a world premiere by Eric Tanguy, one of France s most award-winning composers. We will welcome Giles Since, French contrabassist, who will join the evenings musicians in popular French chansons. From Tokyo to Paris and Holstebro the legendary violinist Ivry Gitlis s life and career is celebrated with innumerable concerts. Christian Labrande s documentary from 2008 on Ivry Gitlis, Ivry Gitlis, The violin without borders. Gitlis was born in Israel but lives in Paris. He has worked with John Lennon, Eric Clapton and Rolling Stones long before the word cross-over was invented. His recordings of, among others, Sibelius and Bartok are absolute masterpieces.
