2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE At its best, music points to something greater than ourselves. Michael Le Roy President, Calvin College Consider this: each individual note in a symphony is meaningless without the accompaniment of its counterparts. Likewise, each individual musician in an orchestra relies on the complements of her neighbors. And the soloist is hardly the exception. Every person with whom he shares his craft becomes part of the larger discussion that music is stirring. Similarly, at its finest, music also points to someone greater than ourselves. In Psalm 40 (NIV), David declares: He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD. Not only does God actively place the song in David s mouth and give him the strength to sing it, but the very gift of song that David receives is a benefit to the wider community. By David s song, others will know the Lord. Throughout the ages, music inspires rich community among listener, performer, composer and, at its best, the Great Composer. In this season of Music at Calvin, I invite you to join us in extending and deepening this communal conversation. 2

About Calvin Calvin College, one of the largest Christian colleges in North America, is internationally recognized as a center of faith-anchored liberal arts teaching and scholarship. Founded in 1876 by the Christian Reformed Church and named for the sixteenth-century reformer John Calvin, the college welcomes students from an array of faith traditions. At Calvin, they discover a distinctive meld of Christian worldview and fearless academic inquiry. Occupying 390 wooded acres in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Calvin s graceful, modern campus offers students remarkable resources: sophisticated scientific and communications facilities; elegant performance spaces; an excellent library; and a flourishing 100-acre ecosystem preserve. Grand Rapids, a metropolitan area of 1,000,000, hosts a professional ballet, opera, and symphony; a botanical and sculpture garden; four sports franchises; the international art competition ArtPrize; and every other urban amenity. the department of music at Calvin season 3

6 SPECIAL EVENT SERIES An exploration of Messiaen s faith through music, a collaboration of ensembles, a sleigh ride adventure around the world, the annual service of Lessons & Carols and stunning faculty performances you will not want to miss a beat of the Special Event Series this year. Messiaen s Visions of Amen An Exploration of Messiaen s Faith Expressed Through Music October 9 CFAC Recital Hall 7:30 p.m. In 2004, while studying Olivier Messiaen's music, Calvin professor Hyesook Kim, piano, found herself wishing she knew more about the religious perspective of the French composer. Olivier Messiaen had stated the sole purpose of his music was to point people to Christ yet little had been written about the connection between his faith and his music. Professor Kim with colleagues Steve Schloesser, of Loyola University, and pianist Stéphane Lemelin, of McGill University, received a grant from the Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship to explore the subject of Messiaen's faith and music. The fruits of this project culminated in the recent publication of Steve Schloesser's Visions of Amen: The Early Life and Music of Olivier Messiaen. A recording of Messiaen's Visions de l'amen, performed by Hyesook Kim and Stéphane Lemelin, is included with the book. This concert is to celebrate the completion of their project. 6
