4 SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND ECU s School of Communications and Arts has officially launched its own research and creativity website called SCAface. SCAface is a place where ECU s School of Communications and Arts can celebrate the creativity and diversity offered within its courses. Visitors to the site will be able to view the School s latest news and events as well as profiles of staff and students and media galleries. When asked what the new website offered, Head of School Professor Clive Barstow said SCAface is a dynamic website that keeps our professional and creative communities up to date with everything that is happening in the School. Visit: GRADUATES HELP PAPER PLANES TAKE FLIGHT Some of Australia s biggest films are being made with the help of graduates from ECU. Four graduates of ECU s WA Screen Academy recently had the opportunity to put theory into practice with production roles in the Australian family drama Paper Planes. The movie, starring Sam Worthington, follows a young Australian boy with a passion for flight and the challenges he faces to compete in the World Paper Plane Championships in Japan. Arwen Gunter completed her Master of Professional Communications at ECU in Her primary role on Paper Planes was Video Split Operator; however, she also acted as 2nd Camera Assistant to the two main camera units. It was hard work as there were a lot of location changes but it was a great opportunity to learn, as it meant I was close to the action and could see the techniques they used, Arwen said. It was a fun experience my first feature and I never would have had the opportunity without the WA Screen Academy, she said. Fellow WA Screen Academy graduates Hannah Moran, Matt Hodgkinson and Cody Cameron-Brown also secured various production roles in Paper Planes. Besides getting a preview of what their future career might be like, students were given the opportunity to make strong connections with industry. STORIES THROUGH THE LENS School of Communications and Arts graduates Jacqueline Warrick and Sarah Landro have developed Camera Story, a program that sees underprivileged children paired with professional photographers to experience a different type of learning. The project was formed after the pair returned from working as photographers overseas in However, Ms Warrick said the idea for the Camera Story actually came years earlier. The inspiration came in 2010 when we were fortunate enough to attend the ECU/Pathshala Photojournalism School in Bangladesh. Camera Story has now become an international collaborative project where the aim is for children to pick up the camera and explore the world outside and become picpals with children from other countries, sharing their discoveries across the globe. Photo by: JACQUELINE WARRICK VISUAL ARTS GRADUATE RECEIVES A KICK-START 4 ECU Visual Arts graduate Katie West is one of only 14 artists from across Australia to be selected for the Kickstart Program for the NEXT WAVE festival. Kickstart is a development program that provides young artists with the money, time and space required to develop their ambitious projects. The program encourages artists to think big and gives them the opportunity to mix with other artists across disciplines. Now in its fourteenth year, Kickstart is the only program of its kind in Australia. The program involves three professional development intensives in Victoria, as well as ongoing support to develop the project Katie has proposed. West s work is defined by a journey to reconnect with her heritage and the task of building her own sense of Aboriginality. It is about finding pieces dismantled by past government policies and the ongoing impacts of colonisation. This is coupled with an interest in the mechanisms that create social change, and a desire to challenge the myths revolving around Australia s national identity. Katie said Making it into the Kickstart program is a huge achievement. I feel very lucky and privileged to be one of the fourteen selected to take part. The best thing about this program is having an organisation such as Next Wave seeing potential in your ideas and then providing a supportive environment with other artists to make it happen.

Students can choose from a number of majors, including Developing Sustainable Communities, Sustainable Business Management, Sustainable Environments, Sustainable Planning or Humanities and Arts. The Humanities and Arts major offers a broad range of units in the arts and creative industries disciplines. Students develop a firm foundation in historical, geographical, cultural and political knowledge with sustainability as a central theme. Higher level units in this major include contemporary sustainable design practices and environmental humanities, in conjunction with an arts practicum that contextualises this knowledge within a great breadth of professional learning experiences. Employment Opportunities Graduates from this major will be well-equipped to work within a wide range of government and creative industries, both locally and overseas. 20 Diploma of Language Studies Duration: 2 Years Students develops skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in French or Japanese, with particular emphasis on terminology, structures and registers for communicative use in contemporary society. The course provides an opportunity for students to broaden their degree qualification to include a language specialisation. A language specialisation enhances students personal development in cross-cultural competence and explicitly promotes an international outlook. Competitiveness in the employment market both in Australia and overseas are enhanced by having a qualification with a language specialisation. ECU HAS A STRONG REPUTATION FOR BEING STUDENT FOCUSED. I began my French studies at ECU as a complete novice. The rigorous curriculum and hands-on practical method offered by the ECU French department has taken me from someone who could only say bonjour to being fluent in French in just a few years. This enabled me to sit and successfully complete the French Government s challenging Diplome Approfondi de Langue Francaise (DALF) examination. The DALF gives accreditation for a French speaker s fluency, and now enables me to work in professional roles in France or study at French universities without taking any language entrance exams. Kristian Guagliardo ECU French graduate Majors are available in the following disciplines: French, Japanese Admission Requirements One or more of the majors in this course has admission requirements. Refer to the major for more information. Employment Opportunities Employment opportunities include teaching French or Japanese at schools in Australia, teaching English in France or Japan, working at French or Japanese companies in Australia, France or Japan, conducting own business with companies in France or Japan, and using French or Japanese in Australia s hospitality industries.
