A Rigorous, Enriching Program The Visual Arts program offers you, the developing artist, excellent working space, an invaluable foundation of skills, supportive faculty and the opportunity to explore, share and realize individual creativity and expression. It offers in-depth studio practices and art history combined with exhibition opportunities and exposure to the cultural institutions of Windsor and Detroit. This program includes courses in drawing, painting, print media, photography, sculpture, bio art, film production and integrated media (digital imaging, sound and video). Individual studio space is available to you during Year 4.
3 Visual Arts Our studio faculty members exhibit their own work nationally and internationally, and our art history faculty members are invited to lecture in other communities both in Canada and abroad. Among our graduates are nationally known artists, faculty at universities in both Canada and the US, and curators in major art galleries. We have a newly established Incubator Lab that provides the opportunity to explore Bio Art. Our Green Corridor course is an interdisciplinary study of art and the environment. Throughout the year, visual arts students put their works on display for their peers, faculty, the University of Windsor community, and the Windsor area at large. We also encourage you to engage in the local arts community through exhibiting and participating in off-campus, cultural activities. 4 Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Visual Arts and Communication, Media and Film Doug MacLellan 2014 This program combines a foundation in artistic skills with an analysis of contemporary media institutions and production practices. We offer you practical, skill-based training in studio areas such as photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, print media, digital video and new media, while also emphasizing the critical and theoretical concerns in contemporary art. A Rigorous, Enriching Program Visual Arts provides a strong foundation in studio practices (drawing, painting, print/digital/integrated media, photography, sculpture, bio art, etc.) and art history with exhibition opportunities and exposure to regional cultural institutions. It offers opportunities for internship placements to obtain hands-on experience in areas including media production/ post-production; advertising, marketing and public relations; arts administration and festival organization. Communication, Media and Film engages the rapidly changing media environment and the implications of emerging digital technologies/platforms. It provides state-of-the-art production/post-production facilities featuring industry-standard equipment and software.
5 Visual Arts and Communication, Media and Film The Visual Arts and Communication, Media and Film program includes courses in drawing, painting, print media, photography, sculpture, bio art and integrated media (digital imaging, sound and video). We offer a complete range of advanced, industry-standard digital media equipment and state-of-the-art post-production labs. Our teaching and studio facilities are also complemented by project and internship opportunities at on-campus and off-campus media outlets, production houses and local arts and cultural organizations. Our studio faculty members exhibit their own work nationally and internationally, and our art history faculty members are invited to lecture in other communities both in Canada and abroad. 6 Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Visual Arts and the Built Environment Visual Arts and the Built Environment is a unique, program offered by the s School of Creative Arts in collaboration with the University of Detroit Mercy s (UDM) School of Architecture. A Rigorous, Enriching Program This cross-border program combines the study of art and architecture and offers you the breadth of knowledge and experience in both disciplines. You will have the opportunity to take courses in Windsor and Detroit. If you are interested in pursuing architecture and qualify, in the third year, you can apply to the Architectural Program at UDM. This option leads either to a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture after fourth year from UDM, or after a fifth year of study, a professional degree at the Master s level from UDM (MArch.) If your primary interest is in visual arts, you can complete fourth year at the and graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts and the Built Environment.

8 Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Media Art Histories and Visual Culture Studio art classes combined with unique academic courses ranging from traditional art history to the visual culture of everyday life. A Rigorous, Enriching Program As the everyday use of images expands exponentially across digital media, our combined BA program in Media Art Histories and Visual Culture responds by probing the ways in which we see and understand the world around us. Study how art, architecture, and media technologies intersect to shape our understanding of our local and global cultures in both historical and contemporary contexts. The program provides first-hand experience in the conceptualization, curation, funding, and organization of exhibitions, events, and workshops and gives insight into existing art economies and models for new and expanded networks of cultural practice. It also enables avenues for graduate studies: art and architectural history, curatorial and museum studies, information science, and art conservation.
9 Media Art Histories and Visual Culture What You Will Take First Year Contemporary Visual Culture Studio Practice and Ideas/Drawing Studio Practice and Ideas/Image Studio Practice and Ideas/Space Studio Practice and Ideas/Time-Based Experiential Learning The Media Art Histories and Visual Culture program gives students a critical background in which to interpret and contextualize the historical legacies of art, media, technology, urban ecologies and the built environment and to apply their historical and theoretical knowledge to projects that investigate the complexity of contemporary culture. While the development of research and studio skills is essential within this program there is also a strong emphasis on first hand observation through the following: urban field research, community and collaborative models media literacy and digital skills research-creation projects that emphasize the relationship between image, text and sound In addition to the introductory courses in Visual Culture and Media Art Histories at the first and second year levels, students will take courses in the history of art, photography, architecture, and the urban environment. Specialized upper level seminars currently include: Contemporary Photography, Urban Ecologies, Detroit Architecture, and Border Cultures.
