Barr, PhD, RN, CNE, Co-Director Mission of the Center Provide educational programs that assist health care providers to gain knowledge and skills needed to deliver culturally sensitive and competent care Increase understanding of health through research of individual experience and cultural meanings Foster understanding between health care professionals and peoples of Hispanic origin Promote interdisciplinary and inter-university collaboration to address bicultural issues facing health care professionals Structure of the Center The Center for Hispanic Studies in Nursing and Health is administered by two Co- Directors with the support of five Associates, an Advisory Council and a work study student from UT Arlington. Associates and Advisory Council members are individuals who have special interest and/or expertise in issues related to the health of the growing Hispanic population. As volunteers, they assume responsibilities for selected aspects of the work of the Center (see Appendix A for Organizational Chart). Associates of the Center UTA School of Nursing Associates Mary Jane Ashe, RN, MSN, Assistant Director, Undergraduate Student Services Offices, assumes responsibility as liaison with the Hispanic Student Nursing Association and other student organizations Dr. Donelle Barnes, Associate Professor, assumes responsibilities for identification and assistance with implementation of selected research projects Dr. Ferne Kyba, Clinical Professor Emerita, assumes responsibilities for oversight of fund raising activities and collaborates with the UTA Office of Development to identify appropriate sources for support of Center initiatives

Cason, Associate Dean for Research in the School of Nursing and Director, Center for Nursing Scholarship and Technology Dr. Adela Gonzalez, Executive Director for the Center for South Texas Programs, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dr. Casey Gonzales, Director of Multicultural Outreach and Assistant Dean of Students, UTA Dr. Marygrace Hernandez-Leveille, Heart Hospital Baylor Plano Dr. Suzan Kardong-Edgren, Assistant Professor, Washington State University Dr. Mary Elaine Jones, Brig. General Lillian Dunlap Professorial Chair in Nursing, University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, Texas and Co-Founder, Hispanic Center Sylvia Alonzo Rawlings, Director of the Center for Rural Health Outreach Staff Brenda Vidales, UTA international business major, assumed responsibility for clerical support and assisted with marketing and activities as needed. She graduated in May of Ana Sanchez, an accounting major, joined the Center on September 1, Ana has been a residential assistant at UT Arlington for the past two years and is knowledgeable about a variety of activities/resources on the campus and within the larger community. Objectives of the Center

3 1. Support research contributing to the knowledge base of health care issues relevant to the Hispanic populations. One award of $1050 was given to Dr. Donelle Barnes, Associate Professor in the UT Arlington School of Nursing during the past academic year. Her study, entitled, Mexican Immigrants Perceptions of Hypertension is a phenomenological study that aims to describe the beliefs and experiences of Mexican immigrants with a diagnosis of hypertension as they live with and engage in their care for high blood pressure. The outcomes of this study will assist researchers in further correlation and intervention studies. Dr. Barnes coordinated the second luncheon for faculty and students interested in research with Hispanic populations in the fall of Dr. Elizabeth Trevino presented secondary data and community research she had undertaken as a DrPH student at the University of North Texas Health Sciences Center. In the spring of 2009, Dr. Barnes invited Dr. Cheryl Anderson, a recipient of the annual Center s research award, to present findings related to the Psychological consequences of childbirth among Hispanic teens. 2. Provide educational programs to foster increased understanding between health care professionals and peoples of Hispanic origin Continuing Education Offerings: 1. The Travel, Study, Learn Program, a continuing education program for health professionals who wish to begin or refine Spanish language skills and learn about Mexican culture and health first hand, offered two travel tours to Cuernavaca, Mexico (January and May). The program was developed as a modified field experience and founded on the belief that achieving skill in communication across cultural boundaries requires opportunities for the learner to reflect on personal beliefs and values as well as gain knowledge specific to a particular culture. Thirty-six continuing education units (Type I) are awarded through the American Nurses Association Credentialing Center. A total of 12 persons participated during The May 2009 trip was cancelled in compliance with the University of Texas System ban on unnecessary travel to Mexico during the May swine flu epidemic. 2. Communication with Spanish Speaking Clients (Medical Spanish) was marketed but not offered during the academic year due to lack of sufficient enrollment numbers. Endowed Hispanic Lectureship 3. Plans for the 3 rd Endowed Hispanic Lectureship began during the academic year. The 3 rd lecture will be held during Hispanic Heritage month from September 15-October 15, 2010 with a focus on Research, Education and Practice in a Diverse Global Community. Dr. Beverly Malone, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National League for Nursing (NLN) will be the distinguished lecturer. The

4 lecture, scheduled for Friday, October 15, 2010 will be followed by a response and discussion and a reception. In collaboration with the Center for Hispanic Studies in Nursing and Health s lecture, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) will hold a national Leadership Summit the following day, Saturday, October 16, STTI leaders, speakers and participants from the Summit will be invited to join the free lecture and reception on the 15 th 3. Maintain/expand collaborative partnerships with interdisciplinary and university groups. Collaborative partners include: Universidad Internacional, Cuernavaca, Mexico (since 1991) University of North Texas Health Science Center School of Public Health Hispanic Health Coalition Sigma Theta Tau International and Delta Theta Chapter Representation of Co-Directors and Associates in organizations dedicated to Hispanic issues: Jose Alejandro serves as Dallas Chapter president of the Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN). Drs. Donelle Barnes and Mary Lou Bond are members of HISPA, the Hispanic Health Professionals Association. Dr. Donelle Barnes is Chair of the Board of Mission Fort Worth which provides primary health care for uninsured Hispanics. She also served as a volunteer and interpreter at the Tarrant County Hispanic Wellness Fair in Fort Worth in August, Dr. Wendy J. Barr is an Associate Member of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN), and attended NAHN s 34 rd Annual Conference in San Antonio in July, Dr. Mary Lou Bond is an Associate Member of NAHN and attended the 34 th Annual Conference in San Antonio in July, Provide resources on Hispanic health issues to health care providers The Center has traditionally housed selected books, magazines and tapes for use by faculty and students. A recent inventory of all book and resource holdings was completed this summer and will be made available to faculty and graduate students during Hispanic Heritage month.

5 Other activities, Participation in the annual Hispanic Wellness Fair, Fort Worth, TX, August 1, The Fair provides screening for over 15,000 persons each year and is used as a vehicle for recruiting Hispanics into the nursing programs at UT Arlington. 2. Participation in Viva Dallas on August 8, Viva Dallas is a community event focusing on Hispanic issues/events and serves as a venue for recruitment of Hispanics into nursing. Two students from the summer course, Enhancing Nursing Practice and Safety with Hispanic Patients Through Better Communication (Medical Spanish) represented the Center. 3. Financial support awarded ($1050) to Dr. Donelle Barnes for initiation of research study. 4. Research Studies Although not directly sponsored by the Center for Hispanic Studies in Nursing and Health, several individuals have been involved in research projects related to Hispanic issues: Barr, W. Evaluation of the Content Validity of the Institutional Self- Assessment for Factors Supporting Hispanic Student Retention (ISA) and Health Care Profession Education Program Self-Assessment (PSA). Principal Investigator. $1500 from the Texas Organization of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Education (TOBGNE). Bond, M.L. Appreciation Special appreciation is given to Delta Theta Chapter for a pledged contribution of $5000 for the 3 rd Endowed Hispanic Lecture in Congratulations Congratulations to Dr. Carolyn Cason, member of the Hispanic Center Advisory Board, upon her election to the Academy of Distinguished Teachers, University of Texas at Arlington. Congratulations to Brenda Vidales, work study student in the Center for the past two years.
