1 NORDIC SKI CLINIC I noticed a number of skiers in Edmonton last fall using roller skis. I'd like to obtain a pair this spring. What should I look for and where can I order a pair? A.L. Johnson, Edmonton, Alberta There are approximately two dozen different models available world-wide that we are aware of. Roller skiing has boomed in Europe and more models are coming over to Canada. We recommend small-wheeled skis for smooth pavement, but, if your roller skiing is to be done on gravel roads, there are a number of models with inflatable tires which make roller skiing on gravel safe and easy on the legs. Inflatable tires limit vibration on gravel, which, if excessive, can burst tiny capillaries under the skin surface. Wider skis should be used, if you're an older beginner, to assist with balance' and control. Start ten minutes a day for the first couple of weeks to gain the feel of them. Stay on flat roads, secluded from heavy traffic. Only as strength increases should you tackle gradual uphills. Avoid downhills. A future issue of NORDIC CANADA will offer up to date information on roller skiing. The following are some importers of roller skis. We 'd appreciate hearing of other firms who bring in models to 14 NORDIC Canada or who offer them from US. distribution points. John E. V6J 4P3 Reliable Racing Supply, 624 Glen St., Glens Falls, N. Y USA I've noticed that my synthetic-based skis are very slow in temperatures below minus 30 Celcius. Is that the fault of my ski bases or waxing methods? J.K. Harris, Winnipeg, Manitoba No, it isn't a fault of the base. The colder the snow and air temperature, the slower the glide, whether bases are wooden or synthetic. As temperatures drop, the glide is poor even with the best of waxes. As a trivia note: friction on sand is comparable when the temperatyre drops to minus 80 Celcius. (Who skis at - 80 anyway?) Glide depends upon a microscopic layer of water being formed between the ski base and the track. The thicker the liquid film between skis and snow, such as in milder temperatures, the better the glide. The thinner the moisture layer, the slower the glide. Your only recourse to obtain the best glide possible in cold temperatures is to wax with one or two very thin layers and polish the hard wax absolutely smooth. This will help to eliminate any additional drag in the track. All wax brands offer hard wax for very cold conditions, and each is affected by ~ extreme below zero temperatures. JI I recently purchased a pair of mica wax less cross country skis. The stiffness of camber suits my weight but I find them a little slow. Can they be speed waxed? Jack Wallace, Montreal, P.O. Yes. Calgary's Dan Larson, Canadian distributor of Bonna mica wax less skis says that you can. Larson suggests th~t you speed wax the tip and tail areas as you would any synthetic-based waxable. ski. You may also add grip wax under the foot if you feel that the skis are not suitable for a particular condition. In cleaning the skis, remove excess wax with a plastic scraper first and follow through by cleaning the remaining wax with a liquid wax remover. According to Larson, mica skis work in most conditions but there are some types of snow in which performance could be improved. Waxing, therefore, can be recommended for the mica base. The camber of my wooden skis is decreasing by the week. Is there any way to put new life into my wooden skis? A.A. Potter, Halifax, N.S. Loss of camber is common among older wooden cross country skis. They've seen a great number of kilometres and tend to get soft and flatten out. This is especially true of the less expensive skis. There is a method of temporarily instilling new life and springiness into your old skis. Place the skis together base to base. Secure the tips and tails with ski straps. Place a smooth block of wood between the skis at the waist area, so as to spread them approximately four to five inches apart. Using a propane torch, evenly heat the tops and edges of the skis from tips to tails, being careful not to burn them. Allow the skis to cool naturally overnight before removing the block and undoing the straps. The skis will have a temporary new spring to them which, depending upon the type of wooden skis they are, may permit the new camber to last for a couple of days or weeks. This process can be repeated frequently if desired, depenjiing upon your amount of skiing. It is only re commended for wooden skis. If you have any questions about your nordic skiing gear or related, subjects, drop us a line at NORDIC CANADA. Address your inquiries to NORDIC SKI CLINIC, Nordic Canada Magazine, 531 rue Deslauriers, Montreal, Quebec H4N 1 W2.

2 Ifyou're looking for cross country skis, you shouldn't have to choose between good kick and smooth glide. With Trak's patented Fishscale N owa.x base, you don't have to. Because Trak combines kick and glide in a totally wa.xless skiro~veyou~wm performance. And now the best waxless base is even better. The Fishscale edges are deeper for greater kick and the surfaces are rounder for better glide. Get on Trak and you 11 see what we've been saying all along. 4 . World exciting nordic event ever to be held un me no I Pare Mont Ste. Anne, Ste. Anne de Beaupre, Quebec City, Ski Quebec, and the Canadian Ski Association will jointly participate in the most in this country. The 2nd World Junior Nordic Championships have arrived! NORDIC CANADA presents a comprehensive background on the Championships' history with an outline of their growth and the statistics that have followed the last 11 meets since the Championships' debut in Canada first took part in the event in Now, nine years later, it is playing host to the mini-olympics of junior nordic competition, the 2nd World Junior Nordic Championships. The announcement was made without much fanfare. The International Ski Federation (FIS) issued a communique in English and German during the events of the '76 Winter Olympics in Austria. In the press room in Seefeld, site of the nordic events, the bulletin read : The International Ski Federation takes pleasure in informing the members of the Press that the FIS Council has, at its last meeting, appointed Quebec, Canada as organizer of the 2nd World Junior Championships in Nordic Events With that announcement came the realisation that Canada was being recognized as a country capable of handling a meet of that calibre. It would be the largest nordic responsibility ever placed on the shoulders of the Quebec Ski Division and the Canadian Ski Association organizers. The awarding of the World Junior Championships also came as a relief to Quebec, which had lost out in its bid to successfully obtain the 1978 World Nordic Ski Championships. These were given, instead, to Lahti, Finland and that country's new eight million dollar nordic stadium. The World Juniors would enable enthusiasm inque-. bec and across the country to continue towards further development of nordic skiing. The World Junior Nordic Championships (as they are called in odd years, or the European Junior Nordic Championships in even years) developed from an enthusiastic proposal put forth by Sigge Bergman in Secretary-General of the FIS, Bergman brought forth the idea of a European championships for juniors in jumping and cross country. He made his suggestion during the nordic ski congress on October 16, 1965 in Helsinki, Finland. The idea was received with interest. At an FIS Council meeting during the '66 World Championships in Oslo, Norway, Bergman took up the idea once more. With near unanimous agreement from all members, he was commissioned to investigate the matter further. He teamed with Czechoslovakia's Vladimir Pael, and Austria's Fred Rossner to determine the concept's feasibility. The collaboration of the three produced.the European Criterium, a joint championships' venture for juniors between Murau, Austria, and Harrachov, Czechoslovakia. The events proved so successful that Sweden and Czechoslovakia recommended to the '67 FIS Congress that an official European Championship be instituted the following year. Without any real opposition the FIS agreed, and Sweden offered to host the 1968 Championships. Shortly afterwards Sweden backed down from its offer to stage the event as France, host of the '68 Olympics, requested permission to combine the Winter Games with the 1st European Junior Nordics in order that the world 's top juniors would also be able to share in the excitement of the Olympics. The FIS was in agreement with the program, which permitted France to ready a site at Morez-Les Rousses for the first Championships, February 2-4, National associations welcomed the French invitation and no fewer than 177 competitors from 16 countries showed up. Success was assured. As Sweden had stepped down to France's wishes regarding the opening Championships, it was awarded the se- Alberta's Joan Groothuysen has North America's best female individual effort in European or World Junior Championship history: 11th place taken at the '76 Championships in Liberec, Czechoslovakia. Gosau, Austria won the bid for the "70 Championships, which marked Canada's debut at the international level. Both the U.S. and Canada required FIS approval to enter, as their junior skiers were not previously considered sufficiently competitive. Canada entered an eight-member team which included seven members of the Inuvik Ski Club. Ottawa Ski Club racer Malcolm Hunter produced a 19th-place effort in the junior boys' 10 kilometre distance while Inuvik's Shirley Firth finished 21 st in the 5 kilometre sprint. In the relays, Canada ran tenth in the boys' and sixth in the girls'. The U.S. team, although invited, was unable to attend because of scheduling difficulties. Almost 300 athletes and coaches from 18 countries attended Gosau. Because of A jumper's panorama view during the '75 European Jun"iors in Lieto, Finland. Vermont's Tim Caldwell managed a strong tenth place in the 5 kilometre individual event. '73 marked the introduction of the longer event, an increase of five kilometres from the ten kilometre distance used since FIS members felt that the calibre of male juniors was rising remarkably quickly. so they instituted a longer and tougher challenge to separate the skiers. Team strength was evident as the U.S. slipped past Sweden. Norway and East Germany to place fourth in the 3-by-10 kilometre boys' rela,,'. Canadian girls ran ninth in their 3-by-5 event. / Canada's team at the '76 European Junior Championships in Liberec, Czech. Left to right: Dave Rees, Luise Sander, Esther Miller, Joan Groothuysen, Pierre Vezina, Doug Gudwer, Stephan Sander, Erik Tronvoll. Bert Bullock and Esther Miller represented Canada in the '74 European Juniors in Autrans, France. From Russia the Championships moved to Autrans, France in 74. There history was made. While Canada and the U.S. took few racers, the athletes they entered counted dramatically in the standings. Vermont's Bill Koch stunned the established nations by taking the bronze medal in the 15 kilometre individual effort, a mere one second ahead of Inuvik's Bert Bullock. It was North America's finest moment in international cross country racing. The U.S. slipped down two positions from their '73 result to finish sixth in the junior men 's relay. Canada's Esther Miller ran 19th in the junior women 's 5 kilometre distance. Colorado's Dan Keenan produced the best North American nordic combined effort to date, 16th overall. In 75 in Lieto, Finland, Bullock ran ninth and Koch 13th in their final bids to win a European Championship title. Esther Miller moved up a notch to 18th in the women's 5 kilometre event. Neither country entered the relays. Jim Denney cif Duluth jumped to 15th place in 70 metre jumping, a placing which has yet to be improved upon by other North American junior jumpers. The 9th European Juniors, hosted by Liberec, Czechoslovakia, featured North America's best female effort to date ' as Alberta's Joan Groothuysen registered 11 th in the 5 kilometre sprint. Doug Gudwer of Prince George was top Canadian male at 42nd. No Americans entered. Groothuysen went on to lead her team to eighth spot in the women's relay. With the name change to the 1 st World Junior Nordics in 1977, no dramatic increa ses in performance were noted by North American skiers. From Ste. Croix, Switzerland in '77 to the 10th European Championships in Murau, Austria last winter, U.S. skiers again did not improve upon Koch's, Denney's, Keenan's, or its relay teams' past performances. Canada did not take part. However, the stage is set for improved results this month as top American and Canadian skiers attempt to show well on North American home soil. Since the announcement by the FIS to award Quebec the '79 Championships, Canadian and American programs have had three years, and the experience of past Championships, in which to prepare their young. The outcome should be worth waiting for. NORDIC 19

7 Canada's Marvin Strlmbold has trained very hard to be In top shape for the World Juniors. By tradition the Junior Championships events, Ste. Anne de Beaupre will house have been limited to a small scale. As the expected 275 athletes and officials, competitions deal with junior-aged athle I while Quebec City will provide the historic tes from 15 to 20, it was felt that facilities, locale for the official opening and closing celebrations and organizational hoopla ' ceremonies. should be kept to a minimum. 8 ., Monique Waterreus will represent Whitehorse, Yukon. According to Fred Morris of Ottawa, Canada's national jumping chairman, our jumping squad won't be the strongest ever fielded at the Junior Nordics. Following the '76 shake-up of the national program, ski jumping has had to redevelop from scratch. However, a number of quickly rising juniors do stand out as potential representatives to Mont Ste. Anne. Leading the Canadian squad will probably be Ottawa's Horst Bulau, 16, 1978's Shell Cup Junior Champ and bronze medalist in the '78 Shell Cup Senior 90-metre competition. Angela Schmidt is the leader of our junior girls. Her early season results were encouraging and she can have good races in Mont Ste-Anne. team. Its ski jumpers have an outside chance, but in the nordic combined department, Canada may not even be abl'e to field a team. Team selections have not been finalized at this writing. Choosing the cross country squad will be based on results at the Gitchi Gami Games in Telemark, the Eastern U.S. Dannon Cup Series, and the Shell Cup Senior Nationals' 15 and 5 kilometre distances in Morin Heights. Considered to have the best opportunities to qualify are Cantley, Quebec's Richard Weber and Marvin Strimbold of Burns Lake, B.C. Thunder Bay Ski Club's Dean Levanen and Ken Hawthorne of Bracebridge, Ontario could round out the men's squad. Sudbury's Perry Sakki could have an outside chance of making the team. Cross country women will probably consist of Honey Harbour, Ontario's Angela Schmidt and Agincourt's Petra Helw a. Quebec's representative will no doubt be Johanne Ross of Vanier, and I Another Ottawa native, Serge Desrochers, Thunder Bay's Kari Tuhkanen, Van couver's Tom Thompson, and Quebec City's Richard L'Heureux are openly vying for team positions. Oshawa, Ontario's Ronny and Randy Richards have a possible chance to qualify. Team selection will be based on numerous U.S. and Canadian events during December, January, and February. Canada's nordic combined chairman, Irvin Servold of Devon, Alberta, believes that Canada may go unrepresented in this event. The program has received very little support over the past years and junior development is almost nil. Biathlon, which re-emerged only a couple of seasons ago, has far more junior talent than nordic combined has managed to develop in the last decade. Part of the reason for many skiers not turning to nordic combined is the growing trend towards specialization in nordic events. Canada does not have college programs similar to those in the U.S., Johanne Ross, from Quebec City, will surely be the homecrowd favorite at these ' championships. The diminutive skier has put a lot of effort into making the canadian team. which encourage nordic combined by making facilities and time available to pursue both sports properly. Servold's sons Neil and Jon are the two major combined enthusiasts in the country. Unfortunately Jon broke his collar bone jumping in December. Whether he will be sufficiently strong enough to represent Canada in mid-february is uncertain. Servold hopes to provide some competi tion for Neil and other interested combined athletes before making a decision. Should Canadians be far behind their U.S. counterparts, it's likely that no nordic combined athlete from this country will compete in Quebec. The U.S. is expected to be fully represented in all three endeavours. NORDIC 21
