Introduction and Special Features 14-a Introduction Business management is a key contemporary field of study. As such it provides opportunities to understand, analyse and interpret business activity in its social and economic context and management in all its forms as it is applied to the world of business and organisational life. This is achieved with an engaging and relevant mix of skills and knowledge involving marketing, finance, strategy, human resources and a range of specialist fields that animate and sustain this important field of study. Subject knowledge is combined with a focus on skills and personal development in organisational and business contexts. 14-b Special features of the programme. This programme is designed to respond to the continuing strong demand for business and management degrees, both in specialist and combined study forms. It recognises the importance of developing both the academic skills to study and research business management, and the professional skills that will allow students to operate effectively in business environments. In combining practical skills with academic knowledge the programme combines a comprehensive grounding in key aspects of business management with opportunities for students to enhance their career prospects through specialisation in different areas and experiential learning. The programme aligns itself with the professional accreditation requirements of professional bodies such as the Institute of Leadership and Management and addresses the changing needs of students and employers in local, national and international arenas. 2

3 15. Criteria for Admission Specialist Degree: A minimum of two A2 levels or a 12 unit AVCE or a combination. The minimum requirement is usually two passes at A2 level (or equivalent) with three GCSEs at grade C, or equivalent, including English Language and Maths. Joint Honours Degree: A minimum of two A2 levels or a 12 unit AVCE or a combination. The minimum requirement is usually two passes at A2 level (or equivalent) with three GCSEs at grade C, or equivalent, including English Language and Maths. verseas Students: verseas students requiring direct entry onto the BA will require IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5 in any individual skill. verseas students entering Level 1 by way of the Level 0 Foundation programme or the University Certificate in International Foundation Studies (Marketing & Management) will need to have successfully completed and passed all modules of the relevant programme. Business Management welcomes applications from mature candidates who may be eligible to use prior experiential learning (APEL) to substitute for modules in the programme if the learning outcomes from the module match their experience. All such requests will be treated individually and on merit. We also welcome applications from students wishing to join the programme by transferring from other institutions using accredited prior learning (APL). 16. Programme Aims The Business Management programme aims to: Develop critical and analytical understanding of business and management theory and practice. Foster the skills of research, analysis, interpretation, critical thinking and independent inquiry. Provide students with the opportunity to specialise in a particular aspect of business management for a named specialist award. Provide students with vocational competencies that meet the needs of students and employers. Facilitate personal development and the enhancement of skills in communication, team work, self management, organisation and problem solving. Provide students with relevant transferable skills, both conceptual and practical, to enable them to confidently address the demands of the workplace and the employment market. Enable students to develop progressively as autonomous independent learners and to foster intrinsic motivation towards the study of business management. Business Management Joint Honours The Business Management Joint Honours programme will meet the aims and objectives of the Joint Honours Framework. In addition it will: Provide students with an opportunity to develop a critical and analytical understanding of business management practice. Provide students with vocational competencies that meet the needs of students and 3

4 employers Foster the skills of research, analysis, interpretation, critical thinking and independent inquiry.
