5 3 Explore your options Love events, bringing people together, and the power of clear communication to cut through the noise and create change? Always networking and connecting? We are. Study communication at Unitec and there ll be lots of mixing and mingling throughout your studies. And not just with anyone with some of the country s top communicators and potential employers. You ll meet them during industry internships, at the end-of-year Grad Fest evening, and as you organise events or work on projects for real clients. And in all our programmes from event management to public relations, and from the certificate to the bachelors and masters degree. We work closely with leading companies in a variety of different industries, including IBM and Westpac, as well as charitable and not-for-profit organisations like Amnesty International, Oxfam, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, Forest and Bird, and the New Zealand Dance Company. We also have a close relationship with media companies like South Pacific Pictures, Face TV and Planet FM. 7 5 Birgit Hermann International Relations Specialist, Auckland Council Master of International Communication (First Class Honours) graduate I love the variety of projects I manage, from organising events, facilitating international business connections and meeting visiting dignitaries, to writing media articles and speeches for the mayor. One of the highlights so far was successfully lobbying for New Zealand to be selected as profile country of the renowned Hamburg International Film Festival. I coordinated the film selection, media coverage and additional profiling opportunities and liaised with all stakeholders involved. Another highlight was promoting the Auckland participation in the Hamburg Animation Award organising an information session, creating collateral and hosting a local film night. A lot of hard work but it resulted in getting industry sponsors on board, a great number of Auckland entries and an Auckland entry winning one of the main prizes of the international competition. The advertisement for my job specifically asked for someone with a degree in international communication and my masters degree definitely helped me succeed in the highly competitive interview process. In particular, the intercultural communication seminar we did as part of the degree prepared me for the daily challenges of this job. My lecturers were inspiring and always answered my questions promptly and comprehensively, helping me wherever they could. My thesis supervisors in particular were very approachable and went the extra mile, looking after me well during my data gathering period in Papua New Guinea and reading through my thesis drafts in the middle of the night.

8 6 Matt Manukia NZ Editor, Perform New Zealand Bachelor of Communication graduate It wasn t until I started looking for work that I realised the endless opportunities a Unitec Communications degree can lead to. It really does give you the knowledge and skills to get your foot in a number of doors, in my case journalism in the online sector. It helps to have a clear career path in mind, so you can mold your study towards it. My preference was digital media and Unitec gave me the opportunity to hone my Photoshop and video editing skills. When doing group work I took the lead on designing slide shows, presentations and visual materials. It s definitely given me an edge in my current job and makes me a valued team member. I love working in an industry that I am passionate about. Watching, reporting and sharing your opinions about sport is a profession, but sometimes it feels as if I m not working at all! This year I broke some stories that were picked up internationally. It takes a while to find your feet as a journalist, but after a year I feel really confident and it s incredibly satisfying when your work is recognised by your peers. I love working in an industry that I am passionate about.

10 Teresa Yap Executive PA and part-time lecturer, Unitec Institute of Technology Postgraduate Diploma in International Communication graduate In any job advertised nowadays the emphasis is on having great communication skills and both verbal and non-verbal communication skills are essential for so many aspects of life. In my role, I deal with internal and external stakeholders of all levels from senior management to staff and students. I deal with people from all cultures and the paper on intercultural communication I took as part of my postgraduate diploma has been extremely helpful. There is a lot of emphasis on relationship management in my work: keeping a great team, motivating and helping my colleagues. I love the Unitec campus, the people I deal with and the opportunities available for career advancement. I m also very passionate about teaching and helping youth upskill. It s great to be able to teach part-time now. I wouldn t be able to do this without my postgraduate diploma. It wasn t easy juggling work, family and study, but I am glad I persevered. Now I can sit back and say I did it!

11 Kimberley Sullivan Senior Account Executive, Mango Communications Bachelor of Communication (Public Relations and Event Management) graduate I love the variety of clients I get to work with in my job now at the moment I m working with Cadbury and Google. PR is the perfect way to get lots of experience with different sectors of the media. There s always something going on and there are so many opportunities to do things you wouldn t normally get to do. I think one of the main reasons I ve achieved what I did is the support I got from my Unitec lecturers. Use the lecturers knowledge they re there for that reason and are really helpful! You really get to know them during your last year, and I still keep in touch with a couple of my lecturers now. The internship I did at a PR agency as part of my Unitec degree was great too and it helped me land a job at that agency once I graduated. 9

22 20 General Info Fees and loans Fees and loans The indicative fee listed on the page for each programme in this brochure was the approximate 2013 annual programme fee (including GST). Programme fees for 2014 have not yet been set and Unitec is currently reviewing them in the context of the Ministry of Education s fees maxima policy. As soon as they are approved, 2014 fees for these programmes will be available on The indicative fee acts as a guide only. You will be notified of your exact fee when you have enrolled. Please do not send any payment until you receive your fee invoice. The programme fee you pay at enrolment covers tuition and class materials. You will also have to pay a Student Services fee and any applicable NZQA charges. Textbooks for your programme are an additional cost. The deadline for payment of student tuition fees is seven days before your programme starts. You can pay by cheque, EFTPOS, credit card or in the form of an approved application for a student loan. (You should apply for your student loan as early as possible to avoid processing delays.) Once you have your student login, you can also pay online, using myrecords. If you withdraw from a course before 10 percent of the course has been completed you are generally entitled to a refund of 90 percent of fees. There is no refund of fees if you withdraw after this time, except in exceptional circumstances. For full details, read the Admission, Enrolment and Fees Policy available on our website at No record of the enrolment will be entered on your academic record if you withdraw before 10 percent of the course is completed. If you withdraw after 10 percent of the course is completed a grade of W (representing withdrawal from the course) will appear on your academic record. Awards come in all shapes and sizes: from book vouchers to study awards, and from postgraduate scholarships to financial grants for Māori and Pacific students. You can also visit Youth Guarantee scheme If you re aged 16 or 17 the Youth Guarantee scheme gives you the chance to study for free for a year. You can use the money to pay for course fees, childcare or transport whatever you need to make study possible. And as well as the $5000, each scholarship includes one-to-one mentoring with IBM. It s the place to go for course advice, scholarship information, study workshops and even a counselling service. 25 23 Pacific students at Unitec Pacific Centre for Learning, Teaching and Research The Pacific Centre team provides academic, personal and cultural support for all Pacific students. Their services include study workshops, financial advice, scholarship information, mentoring and careers guidance. Feel free to use the drop-in centre and computer facilities while you re there. The Pacific Centre also supports postgraduate students and Pacific research projects. They organise Pacific Orientation activities, Fanau evenings and the Pacific student graduation dinner, too. No computer access? Phone Student Central (Te Pae Kōrero) on to order an application pack. Acknowledgement We will contact you by post or to acknowledge that we have received your application form. Check your spam folder if you haven t heard from us. If you need to supply more details we will let you know. Additional admission requirements Some programmes have additional admission requirements. For example, you may need to complete additional forms, be interviewed, have an audition or present a portfolio of work. You will be notified of the details if this is applicable. 5 Offer of place If your application is successful you will receive an offer of place. This might be conditional on you meeting specific requirements. 6 Acceptance If you are offered a place you normally have 14 days to accept or decline. 7 Payment Once you have accepted your place, your fees are payable. For short courses, fees are payable at the time of applying. For all other programmes, fees need to be paid seven days before you start. You will either be sent an invoice in the post or you can access your invoice online by logging into myunitec. Student loans are available to eligible students.
