7 Rachel Penny Registered Nurse, Waiatarua Unit, Waitakere Hospital Certificate in Foundation Studies (Level 3) graduate Bachelor of Nursing graduate I really love my job. I ve always been interested in mental health. I had a practice placement here while I was studying the Bachelor of Nursing at Unitec and I really enjoyed it. When I finished my Bachelor of Nursing, I applied for the Mental Health New Graduate Internship, which includes a rotation at Waiatarua. I love the fact that the work we do here is so clientcentred and recovery-focused. The Bachelor of Nursing sets you up so well for a career in nursing you can hit the ground running in the workplace. There was such an emphasis on current nursing knowledge, evidence-based practice policies and procedures, and everyone is very supportive and professional. The nursing lecturers were supportive and inspiring, and all the practice placements we did gave us a great overview of all the different work environments you could choose from as a Registered Nurse. Completing the Foundation Studies programme first meant that I was well prepared to succeed in the Bachelor of Nursing degree.

9 7 Steve Ellmers Corporate Communications Assistant, Unitec Certificate in Foundation Studies (Level 3) graduate Bachelor of Communication (Media Relations) student I was working in the banking and investment industries when the 2008 global financial crisis happened. But, after things began to settle down, it was obvious there wouldn t be so many job opportunities in the finance world, especially if I didn t have a decent qualification. So I began Unitec s New Start course, and then enrolled in the Certificate in Foundation Studies. I found the help from my programme coordinator, as well as all of the Foundation Studies lecturers, to be truly life-changing. However, the biggest influence was my tutor in the Academic Study Skills course. She convinced me get more involved with my writing and to switch my focus from finance to media studies. Because she used to be a journalist, her ongoing encouragement and support over the years since I graduated have been huge. Helping me focus on my writing skills prepared me for further study, and has also allowed me to find writing, editing and public relations work. I found the help from my lecturers to be truly life-changing.
