5 Explore your options in architecture Architecture is not just a job. It s not just a craft. And it s not just about creating beautiful houses. It s about reshaping the world, with buildings that are smarter, have a small ecological footprint and feature thought-provoking designs. Study at the Department of Architecture and you ll learn to produce designs that are inspiring, effective, sustainable and enhance the environment. You ll spend most of your time in the design studio, working on a range of studio projects. Perhaps you ll even get to build one of your designs, like the social housing project for the west Auckland community that was designed and built by architecture students under the guidance of well-known architects and builders. You ll probably also take part in design research projects at local architecture practices or, if you re a Master of Architecture (Professional) student, work experience. Our focus on building performance and the act of construction is one of the reasons we re endorsed by the New Zealand Institute of Architects, the New Zealand Registered Architects Board and the Commonwealth Association of Architects. The calibre of our staff doesn t hurt either. You ll be in frequent contact with established architects from New Zealand and around the world during guest lectures, critique sessions, project work or work experience. And then there s our expertise in Māori architecture and technology. Just look at Te Hononga, our Māori studio with its ponga hybrid and nano whare projects, where traditional forms and materials are teamed up with innovative technologies. Be warned: at times we ll tell you to go away. On study tours to Australia, China, Italy and the Pacific Islands, or on a student exchange to architecture schools across four continents. What better way to learn about architecture than to see the world s greatest architectural works for yourself? Architects reshape the world. With buildings that are smart, sustainable and thought-provoking.

Seamlessly Iconic Dillon Towers Bachelor of Landscape Architecture graduate The architectural concept of an icon is applied to the Mt Albert precinct in an attempt to create a new image for Mt Albert that is distinctive, different and, most importantly, visually impressive. Extracted from Asylum, Unitec architecture and landscape architecture 2010.

7 Explore your options in landscape Landscape is changing. Social, environmental and economic factors have shifted the focus of the landscape professions. Today, the spotlight is on ecological restoration, the revitalisation of civic space, urban fringes and infrastructural wastelands, and innovative residential garden design. Study at Unitec s Department of Landscape Architecture and you ll learn to address these shifting demands. Our programmes draw on science, history, art and modern technology. They re lively, engaging and challenging. And most importantly, they re professionally accredited. You re bound to be inspired by our staff too. Our lecturers are internationally recognised landscape practitioners and researchers, all actively involved in the landscape community. Their work is regularly published in international journals, showcasing some of the most original and high-profile landscape projects in New Zealand and around the world. Many of them also sit on the judging panels for industry awards or the Ellerslie Flower Show. And they re supported by well-known guest critics from around the world. As a landscape student you ll work on real projects of all sizes, visit sites, and create imaginative designs that enhance and diversify our environments. There may even be the chance to go on a study tour to Asia, Europe or the Pacific. Above all, you ll be inspired by the many opportunities that exist in landscape architecture and design. You re bound to be inspired by our staff all actively involved in the landscape community.

Cameron Pattullo Senior Architectural Technician, Peddle Thorp National Diploma in Architectural Technology graduate I love the day-to-day challenge of my role. There is always something new to learn and I am becoming more design conscious working alongside great architects. I have a lot of responsibility as a technician, as much as a project architect on some large jobs. When I do good work, word travels fast and I ve learned that you don t have to be a famous architect to be recognised in this industry. I m particularly proud of my work on the Sofitel Auckland Viaduct Harbour and Britomart East Building, projects that I worked on from concept design through to build completion. My qualification prepared me really well to be the conduit between designer and builder a very important role especially in commercial architecture. My qualification has also taken me overseas to work in the UK, and more recently to work on projects in Papua New Guinea.

11 Ethan Reid Director, Changespace Bachelor of Landscape Architecture graduate I was always interested in outdoor recreation, but it was the landscape that captivated me. There s something intriguing about the way we sculpt it for our needs. At school I didn t realise landscape architecture existed, so when I found it I realised it was exactly what I d been looking for. I really enjoyed the different approaches of the lecturers at Unitec. You had to form your own response and it taught you how to think, not what to think. Knowing when to listen and when to challenge what you hear is the core process in my professional life now. Making the one-year mark with the practice is a big achievement for us, and I m proud of the contact network we ve built. The process of creating a landscape is slow, but it s so rewarding when you start to see things come together. If you listen to feedback and respond well to other people, then you can suddenly find your ideas at the forefront of a project. I love the fact that I will always be learning and one of our rules for the practice will be never to hire anyone who we can t learn something from.

Callum Dowie Architectural Graduate, Jasmax Bachelor of Architectural Studies graduate Master of Architecture (Professional) graduate I like coming up with solutions to design problems and using a range of skills to communicate design ideas that will improve the environment we all live in. For example, my graduation project, Folding Whare, was a portable disaster relief shelter that can be transported by helicopter to remote locations and erected without tools. The Folding Whare is technically strong but accessible everybody gets it, from master architects to my mates. The design is based on a traditional Māori tension and compression structure uncovered at a pa site at Kohika in the Bay of Plenty in the 1970s. The ideas used in the Folding Whare aren t new, nor are the parts themselves, but the way they re combined displays an original assembly system. No-one s built anything quite like this as far as I m aware. This kind of project was the highlight of my study the projects that closed the loop, where we got to see a design from an initial concept through to a completed building. And it was great that Unitec funded the construction of a full-scale model of the Folding Whare on campus. I m proud that the Folding Whare was nominated in the Institute of Architects Student Awards. And I m pretty sure that the project helped me get my job at Jasmax.

Anne Thiermann Architectural Graduate, Catalyst Consulting Bachelor of Architectural Studies graduate Master of Architecture (Professional) graduate I think architecture is a great combination of creativity and reason. It s not just about architecture the product, but also about the social, environmental and economical considerations associated with it. It seems that there are always a million ways of dealing with the same problem. I love the problem-solving aspect of architecture. Limitation and boundary is great: without these there s less challenge in the brief we re given. It s great to work somewhere where you re surrounded by people who are passionate and good at what they do, not just in architecture but also other fields that relate and contribute to architecture. At Catalyst there are project managers, interior designers, technicians and architects, which allows me to broaden my knowledge of other fields, giving me a wider understanding of the whole design and build process. There is a strong crosspollination between the different groups because we work in such close proximity. 13

15 Arnika Blount Architectural Graduate, Jasmax National Diploma in Architectural Technology graduate Bachelor of Architectural Studies graduate Master of Architecture (Professional) graduate I ve always been fascinated by the relationship people have with the physical environment and I think architects and designers have a unique opportunity to improve and influence the way people live. At Unitec, I really appreciated the direct contact you can have with staff members and the opportunities on offer. I went on exchange to the Universitá degli Studi di Firenze in Florence, Italy, volunteered in Haiti with Architecture for Humanity, and wrote a paper for the SAHANZ 2012 conference in Australia. I m also really proud to have won the NZIA Graphisoft Student Design Award in 2012, a national competition between the top 12 finalyear students from New Zealand s three schools of architecture. At Jasmax I m really enjoying the collaborative studio environment and the variety of projects that I am involved in.

16 Claire O Shaughnessy Landscape Architect, Jasmax Master of Landscape Architecture graduate Be prepared to work with some brilliant people who are extremely passionate about the discipline. The Unitec staff were just fantastic and seemed to be genuinely interested in my work. I had incredible supervisors who pushed my thinking and made sure that I got the most out of my research. Before my masters degree I had been working in architecture for several years, but wanted to extend my knowledge and design investigation beyond the building envelope. I love creating spaces that can be enjoyed by the public, and it s exciting to be working in a time when the city is willing to change for the better. I enjoy being a part of this movement and keep pushing client expectations through innovation and place-specific designs. The masters degree allowed me to open up my thinking and be exposed to some amazing research, which I still refer to today. It allows me to have a strong understanding of my position within the profession and the importance of keeping up-to-date with contemporary research and thought.

Haylea Muir Senior Landscape Architect, Isthmus Group Bachelor of Landscape Architecture graduate Dealing with so many different levels of scale is something I love. In one week I can be involved with anything from a 40-hectare land development through to a small playground for children. Working on children s play spaces offers up all kinds of surprises. No matter how you think something may work once it is built, kids will use it in ways you never expected. We do our best to create spaces that encourage imagination and discovery, and it s amazing what can unfold. I have become really passionate about designing places for children to play and was part of a design team that created awardwinning areas in Auckland s Hobsonville Point and Wynyard Quarter. I am currently working on two more play spaces in the city and will be thrilled if these end up as popular, challenging and well-loved like the others.
