4 NEWPORT LIVE SPORTS DEVELOPMENT PRIMARY SCHOOL PROGRAMME SPORT SPECIFIC SESSIONS FESTIVAL PREPARATION Sport specific training can be offered in preparation for any of the festivals your school is planning on entering. The training will be offered on a first come first served basis, delivered by fully qualified and DBS checked coaching staff. The sessions will be delivered over a 4/5 week period in the build-up to the festival, enabling the pupils to fully understand the rules and develop/enhance certain fundamental skills. TASTER SESSIONS As a department we work in partnership with many National Governing Bodies of sport that are focusing more and more on engaging primary school aged children into their sport via taster sessions within schools. More and more National Governing Bodies are approaching us with their primary school offers such as Welsh Cycling, Badminton Wales, Cricket Wales, Golf Development Wales to name a few. These offers will be sent to the schools PE coordinator individually so you can you decide if this is something of an interest to your school. We are on hand to discuss further, if needed. YOUNG AMBASSADOR PLAYMAKER AWARD The day long informal course is for pupils aged nine upwards, with the aim of introducing them to the Sports Leadership pathway. They will receive training that will hopefully inspire them to return to school and take on a Sports Ambassador role. This may include delivering activities, assisting teachers, setting up sport forums, or any other sport advocacy role. Last academic year we trained up 156 Young Ambassadors from 12 schools. The award can be delivered within your school facility just for your pupils or we can invite you along to one of our many centrally run playmaker award courses at the regional pool and tennis centre at International Sports Village.
5 NEWPORT LIVE SPORTS DEVELOPMENT PRIMARY SCHOOL PROGRAMME HEALTH AND WELLBEING PROGRAMME The Families First Health & Wellbeing Team provide an integrated programme to support children, young people and their families helping them to improve their health, safety and to enjoy wellbeing. Our ethos is to ensure families are supported and encouraged to live a healthy lifestyle. This may be in the form of universal health promotion messages, activities and workshops (e.g. smoking prevention, healthy eating) in both school and community settings or through specifically targeted health and wellbeing interventions via the referral process. For further information please contact: / familywellbeing@newportlive.co.uk CYCLE PROFICIENCY Live and City Council have teamed up with Cycle Training Wales to deliver cycle proficiency training in local primary schools: All school cycle training delivered by Cycle Training Wales is in conformity with the National Standards for Cycle Training (2005). These guidelines set out the training and skills essential for making cycling trips in today s road conditions. The Standards are recognized by the Department for Transport and the Welsh Government, as well as by diverse non-governmental organizations including RoSPA. Take a look below at the training on offer to your school. NATIONAL STANDARD LEVEL 2 TRAINING On-road cycle training is a great way of getting children riding and for raising awareness of how to deal with other road users. The Level 2 takes place on quiet roads but with real traffic conditions. Those completing Level 2 have demonstrated the skills to make a trip safely to school, work, or leisure on quiet roads.
6 NEWPORT LIVE SPORTS DEVELOPMENT PRIMARY SCHOOL PROGRAMME CYCLE PROGRAMME The Wales National Velodrome in is one of only five internationally recognised indoor velodromes in Britain and is Wales official National Velodome. The velodrome offers a range of sessions and courses to suit all abilities, Live now have an outdoor mountain bike track at International Sports Village, to view the programmes on offer please visit or contact us to discuss bespoke opportunities for your school.
