1 Subject Code and Course Number: ENGL 010 CURRICULUM Division : English Course Title : INTRODUCTION TO LINGUISTICS Summarize the need/purpose/reason for this proposal This is to propose to add an online course to the existing in-class course. Add Form D, modification to SLOs, SPOs, CCOs, MOIs, MOEs, assignment SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes) 1. Identify and explain the key concepts in linguistics. 2. Analyze language in terms of linguistic fields such as morphology, syntax, phonetics, and phonology. SPOs (Student Performance Objectives) 1a. Describe the different types of morphemes and explain the internal structures of words with those morphemes. 1b. Describe the major concepts in syntax and explain the internal structures of sentences using the concepts. 1c. Describe the concepts in semantics including sentential semantics, lexical semantics, and pragmatics. 1d. Identify and explain the speech sounds using the International Phonetic Alphabet and articulatory terms. 1e. Identify and explain the phonological processes of languages using phonetic and phonological terms such as phones, phonemes, minimal pairs, complementary distributions, phonetic features, and natural classes of sounds. 1f. Describe and explain the concepts in sociolinguistics including various kinds of dialects and the language variations caused by language contacts. 1g. Describe the concepts of language changes, the major families of languages, and extinct and endangered languages. 1h. Describe the major theories of language acquisition and explain the concepts of phonological, semantic, syntactic, morphological, and pragmatic acquisitions. 1i. Describe the language processing by the brain such as speech perception and production, lexical access, and syntactic and semantic processing and identify the brain organization of language. Conduct analyses of internal structures of words, phrases, and sentences in the fields of morphology and syntax. 2b. Conduct analyses on the meanings of words and sentences and on the relations among words and among sentences in the field of semantics. 2c. Conduct analyses of speech sounds and phonological processes of language in the fields of phonetics and phonology. 2e. Identify the syntactic categories of sentences. 3. Analyze sentences in terms of the phrase structure rules and X-bar schema. 4. Identify the head of sentences. 5. Analyze sentences in terms of C-selection and S-selection. 6. Distinguish between adjuncts and complements. 7. Describe transformational rules. 8. Describe principles and parameters. III. Semantics 1. Analyze sentences in terms of entailment, synonymy, and contradictoriness. 2. Describe the sentence meanings with the principle of compositionality. 3. Describe paradoxes, semantic anomaly, metaphors, and idioms, which the principle of compositionality does not apply. 4. Describe the theories of word meaning. 5. Identify speech acts of performative sentences. IV. Phonetics and Phonology 1. Read and transcribe words and sentences using the International Phonetic Alphabet. 2. Define speech sounds in articulatory terms. 3. Analyze speech sounds of a foreign language. 4. Determine phonemes of a given language by minimal pair analysis. 5. Differentiate between allophones and phonemes in a given language. 6. Explain the processes of phonological and morphological conditioning of allomorphs. 7. Identify natural classes of speech sounds with feature values. 8. Identify and explain the processes of assimilation, dissimilation, segment insertion, and segment deletion. 9. Describe prosodic features of a given language such as stress and pitch. 10. Analyze phonological processes of languages. V. Language in Society 1. Describe idiolect, dialect, and language. 2. Describe dialect differences in terms of phonology, lexicon, and syntax. 3. Describe social dialects such as such as standard dialects, ethnic dialects, and genderlects. 4. Describe situational dialects including formal and informal styles. 5. Describe lingua francas, pidgins, and creoles. 6. Describe bilingualism including individual bilingualism and societal bilingualism. VI. Language Change 1. Describe language changes by sound correspondences. 2. Describe language changes in terms of phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon, and semantics. 3. Describe the major concepts of comparative linguistics such as Grimm s law, Verner s law, cognates, and comparative reconstructions. 4. Describe extinct and endangered languages. 5. Explain the major families of languages such as Indo-European, Uralic, Sino-Tibetan, Afro-Asiatic, Niger-Congo, and Austronesian. 6. Describe different language classifications by phonology, morphology, lexicon, and syntax. VII. Language Acquisition 1. Describe the major theories of language acquisition including Behaviorism and the Innateness Hypothesis. 2. Describe and identify the stages in language acquisition such as pre-babbling stage, babbling stage, holophrastic stage, and multiword stage. 3. Describe the acquisition of phonology, semantics, syntax, morphology, and pragmatics. 4. Describe bilingual language acquisition and its theories. 5. Analyze infants speech. VIII. Describe the process of speech production including lexical selection. 5. Describe the anatomy of the human brain and identify the modular organization of language in the brain. 6. Describe the brain development for language including the critical period. IX. Computer Processing 1. Describe computer speech recognition and speech synthesis. 2. Describe computer morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. 3. Describe the application of computational linguistics such as computational lexicography, machine translation, and computational forensic linguistics. Multiple choice and short answer quizzes and tests Assignments Example 1: Group Discussion and Individual Activity The instructor will present students a picture of phrase structure trees with syntactic categories. The phrase structure trees contain errors. 1. Discuss which parts of the phrase structure trees are errors, using the knowledge of the phrase structure rules and syntactic categories. 2. Draw phrase structure trees for similar sentences individually. Example 2: Group Activity, Individual Activity, Presentation, and Peer Feedback The instructor will present students a list of combinations of English compound words. 1. Work with your group members and find English compound words for all the combinations and analyze the words in terms of the head position. 2. Conduct an analysis on a different language individually, using the same method as #1, and present your result to their group members. 3. Write the constructive feedback to at least two peers.
