This exciting three year honours degree will enable you to study art and design in a stimulating and internationally renowned academic environment. Our unique course enables you to study art and design theory, alongside a wide range of media, which includes drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, digital media, video and installation. You will acquire professional skills through your academic studies and your practice, and be well prepared for your future career. Studying Art and Design at Leeds This exciting degree course develops your creativity in art and design within an intellectually stimulating learning and research environment. Through a unique combination of art practice, design and theoretical modules, our course offers a broad art education that you may tailor towards your particular creative interests. A framework of academic studies, delivered by experts from a range of art and design disciplines, gives a dynamic context to your specialist art and design studies. You may also develop complementary skills and knowledge through a wide range of discovery modules, available in many different subjects from across the university.

3 Course structure The BA (Hons) Art and Design is a threeyear course. All students follow the same scheme of study in year 1, and undertake specialist study in years 2 and 3. In Year 1, you will undertake core studies in the historic, cultural and technological aspects of art and design. Alongside your academic work, you will pursue a range of art and design practices. You will work across a range of art skills, exploring processes and ideas through your creative studio practice. During semester 1 there is a diagnostic project, and during this year you will have two opportunities to show your work in public venues. In Year 2, you will develop your academic understanding of the core subjects and an awareness of professional standards in design. You will focus your studio practice and begin to produce a sustained body of work, which engages with the sociohistorical, cultural, political, aesthetic, or other appropriate context of art and design. There are further opportunities to exhibit in our open studio event and an art trail. In Year 3, there is the degree show which is both a celebration of all that has been achieved in the three years of the course, and also a public springboard for your future career. You will make and promote a final exhibition of your work, together with accompanying publicity / critical material.

4 You will also produce a written investigation into an art and design subject of your choice. By the end of your degree, you will be able to demonstrate detailed subject and contextual knowledge and a high degree of professionalism in your practice. Professional skills for your career Through your degree studies, you will actively develop a range of skills to prepare you for employment. You will develop your communication, presentation, research and analytical skills; your visual and critical awareness; and your knowledge of the art and design world and related employment. You will arrange a public presentation of your work in your final year, and will be encouraged to engage with a defined public through your art. Broaden your horizons The course runs a regular programme of international visiting speakers and artists, and a regular film programme. Visitors have come from Poland, London, Glasgow, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Malta, France and Italy, to talk and meet with students and give tutorials. Students have visited exhibitions in London, Oxford, Newcastle, New York, and the Cyprus College of Art. Year in Industry The School of Design offers all students the opportunity to gain valuable industrial experience. The Year in Industry module provides you with highly relevant industrial experience, an opportunity to improve your design, communication and people skills and create a network of relevant contacts. The industry experience also helps you to make informed career choices when you graduate. You have the flexibility to do one or more work placements, which can be as short as one month or as long as a year, with opportunities in Leeds, London, Europe, and the rest of the world; recent locations include New York, Sydney, South America, and China. Study abroad opportunities If you wish to study abroad, and are suitably qualified, you may extend your course to study for a year at one of several overseas universities and academies in Europe, the USA and Canada. Overseas placements take place after year 2.

5 How you learn The course encourages exchange in an open studio atmosphere, where students and tutors share ideas and experience in a spirit of collegiality and experimentation. It is a unique environment for making and talking about contemporary art and design. You are encouraged to be an active learner to take responsibility for what and how you study and to keep a record of your progress. You are encouraged to think of art practice in terms of personal research using sketch or notebooks, and to develop your technical, critical and analytical skills. Learning and teaching takes place through lectures, group seminars, tutorials and one-to-one contact with tutors. Assessment of studio work is by visual presentations, portfolio, or other documentation; and theoretical modules may be assessed by written examinations, essays or other written responses. All final year students submit a written dissertation. You will work with the support of staff who are engaged in the contemporary art world - making, exhibiting, writing, publishing, and broadcasting, nationally and internationally. You will have direct access to this pool of professional knowledge, expertise and experience, to assist you with your work and professional career. We provide regular talks by visiting artists and designers, at different stages of their careers. Through these, students learn about professional life as an artist and gain additional stimulus to their practice. We also draw on expertise from across the University; and visitors and staff offer additional, specialist practical workshops. Facilities The BA Art and Design is located at the heart of the University campus in large, well-lit, open plan studios. We are well-equipped for painting, sculpture, printmaking, and lens-based and digital media. There are specialist workshop facilities for sculpture, including wood, metal, plaster and resin; printmaking, including intaglio and screen printing; lensbased practices, including photography and video-editing; and opportunities for animation and web-site design. We are particularly well-equipped in printmaking, painting, sculpture and digital media. Career destinations On completion of this course, you will be equipped for a range of opportunities including art practice, or work in the cultural sector, such as marketing, the media and education. You may also progress to postgraduate study or research.

Entry requirements The School of Design bases its offer of a place on careful consideration of information provided in the UCAS application form. Pre-A level qualifications, including GCSEs, your personal statement, and academic reference are all of importance. Good performance at A level (or equivalent) is regarded as essential. You are required to have a minimum of six subjects at GCSE level to grade C or above, including English Language. Maths or a science subject and Art or Design are expected. We typically ask for three A level subjects to grades A, B, B, including an art or design subject. Equivalent qualifications may also be considered. Art and design foundation course qualifications are welcomed as an additional qualification to A levels, but are not a requirement for entry. Interviews and portfolio viewings do not usually form part of the selection process for this course. However, where it is felt that an interview would be of particular benefit to the applicant or to a group of applicants or where it is considered that further information is required to assess a candidate s potential, applicants may be invited to attend for an informal interview and portfolio viewing to show their practical and written work. Applicants without standard entry requirements will be required to attend for interview and to show their portfolio of work. The candidate s experience, skills and knowledge will be considered in relation to the academic and practical challenges of the course. The School particularly welcomes mature applicants and where appropriate, interviews those undertaking a relevant validated Access course in art and design. The School of Design actively participates in the University of Leeds Access to Leeds Scheme. This alternative entry scheme gives special consideration to applicants whose personal circumstances may affect their ability to demonstrate their full potential through grades alone.
