1 School of Music FACULTY OF PERFORMANCE, VISUAL ARTS & COMMUNICATIONS UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME STRUCTURES, MODULES & PATHWAYS BA Music The BA Music programme offers a three-year degree that can be expanded to four years with the addition of an optional Year in Industry or Year Abroad. Starting from a broad base, this programme allows you to specialise in a number of our pathways:, Aesthetics, Notation and Editing,, Technology, Analysis, and. All BA students will write a Dissertation in their final year, on a topic of their choosing. BMus Music () The BMus () programme is a four-year degree for performance specialists, which allows you to spend a year abroad in your third year in a conservatoire/music college environment. Up to half of your credits can be taken in performance study at Leeds. The year abroad will focus mainly on instrumental/vocal study, but you ll also complete a Dissertation in your final year, and the strong academic grounding you receive on this programme allows you to pursue both performance-related and other careers. Entry is by audition only (applicants need grade 8 Distinction/equivalent before auditioning). BA Music with Enterprise The BA Music with Enterprise programme is taught with colleagues in the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Studies, associated with Leeds University Business School. After the first year, there is increasing specialisation through the course, with modules in creativity, innovation, social enterprise, entrepreneurship and enterprise planning. You will also follow music pathways including, Aesthetics, Notation and Editing,, Technology, Analysis, and. The degree can be extended by adding an optional year in industry/enterprise, or a year abroad. MArts, BArts Music and The new MArts, BArts Music and programme enables you to specialise in this exciting discipline and graduate with an Integrated Masters degree, with the advantage of funding through all years of study. The first year is the same as the BA; you will then start to specialise at level 2 and in level 3 the majority of your modules will relate to music psychology and research methods. You will complete an empirical research project as part of your Dissertation in level 4. The strength of studying at Leeds is its diversity and flexibility, in addition to the opportunities you ll have to specialise in subjects that interest you. It s possible to switch from one programme to another up to the end of the second year (if conditions for transfer are met) which allows for great flexibility and student choice. On the BMus () programme, a year abroad is compulsory, but the other programmes can be extended by adding a year in industry, enterprise or abroad. Our students embrace these opportunities with enthusiasm, and they certainly give our graduates an advantage in a competitive job market. With a wide range of pathway subjects available to undergraduates one of the largest in the UK you can explore your interests and discover your strengths. There is a huge range of opportunity for extra-curricular activity at Leeds, both music and non-music related. All of these factors yield a fantastic undergraduate experience and put our graduates in a strong position to pursue musical or other careers when they leave Leeds. Details of programme structures can be found in this leaflet. 6 LEVEL 1 MODULES IN MUSIC IN MORE DETAIL Providing the foundation for subsequent levels of study MUSS1020 Understanding Music: this module will introduce you to a variety of core strategies for engaging with and understanding music. To take account of the differing interests and backgrounds of a diverse student body including classical, popular or world musicians you may develop various pathways in analytical modules as you progress through the programme. MUSS1030 Music in History and Culture: this module explores a range of historical and cultural perspectives, the interrelationship of performance, composition and notation, audiences, listening and reception, the continuities between art, popular and other styles of music, concepts of authenticity, music and ritual, and the musician in contemporary society. There will be a broad overview of all kinds of Western music in its social and cultural contexts from 1600 to the present, as well as a consideration of music in global contexts. MUSS1110 Music Research Skills: working in small groups, you ll explore the essential academic and research skills required throughout your study, and create your first research project as part of your portfolio. As you learn these key skills, you will meet and work on a weekly basis with a small group of your fellow students in semester 1. MUSS1220 : you ll be introduced to techniques of composition rooted in the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. You ll explore approaches to both acoustic (notation-based) and electronic sound-composition fields as well as a range of repertoire which will focus on contemporary music post MUSS1320 : in this module you ll be provided with funding for instrumental or vocal lessons with a specialist teacher, as well as attending some classes and having the chance to perform in informal masterclasses. You ll develop skills including technique, interpretation and communication. We normally expect students to have a minimum of grade 7 distinction in a practical exam before starting this module (if you are of equivalent standard, you may audition). MUSS1324 Ensemble : you ll develop skills in practical music-making in small or large ensembles. Activities include orchestral playing, choral singing, popular, world and new music ensembles, band and chamber groups. The culmination of each ensemble project is a public concert in each semester. MUSS1520 Introduction to the Sciences of Music: a theoretical foundation in the theory of the science, psychology and technology of music. The module is split into two components. includes music perception and cognition, the psychology of performance, musical development, music in everyday life, and an introduction to different research methods. Music Technology will include sound waves, the harmonic series, spectrograms, acoustics, microphones, analogue and digital audio, stereo listening and recording, decibels, midi and mixing desks. All students are assigned a Personal Tutor at the start of level 1; they will meet with you throughout your programme to monitor your progress and wellbeing. Full details of modules can be found here: 6

7 PATHWAYS IN THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC After Level 1 you can choose to specialise in the following modules: Aesthetics: you ll pursue MUSS2520 Aesthetics and Criticism, and develop an understanding of a range of historical aesthetic positions, both generic and musical. You ll look at contemporary media, press sources, films and literature, and get some experience writing concert reviews. In the level 3 module, MUSS3540 Contemporary Aesthetics, you ll explore various schools of recent thought, and make connections between thought and artistic practice through an independent project. Analysis: through MUSS2020 Interpreting Music at level 2, you ll explore analytical strategies for tonal music, with specific reference to classical instrumental music and Anglo-American popular music. Later, you ll look at responses to musical texts which might include various strategies such as critical, sociological, or narrative approaches. At level 3, in MUSS3040 Analysing Music, you ll develop a guided, independent analytical project. : you ll widen your knowledge of techniques, material, form and instruments in MUSS2220. Acoustic composition focuses on composers of the avant-garde and their approaches to contemporary composition; electroacoustic/sound composition investigates experimental techniques such as use of microphones, granular sound processing, and free improvisation. In both this module and level 3, MUSS3240, you ll produce a folio of creative work. : the level 2 module, MUSS2920 Psychology of Listening and, aims to explore how psychological research has been used to explain musical behaviours such as the development of ability/expertise, emotional responses to music, and listening behaviours. At level 3, MUSS3940, you will devise a practical project which demonstrates your analytical skills. If you continue to the MArts programme, in MUSS3945 Researching, you will develop the application of quantitative and qualitative research techniques. At level 4, you will produce an independent Dissertation (MUSS5162M) on a topic of your choice, as well as taking MUSS5931M Case Studies in the Applied Psychology of Music, focussing on topics such as education, therapy, advertising, technology, science, and society. Music Technology: MUSS2620 Music Technology Skills and Techniques will introduce you to sound recording and electronic/computer music, and you ll engage with practical work as well as developing an understanding of contexts. MUSS3640 Music Technology enables you to devise, plan, realise and document a substantial project which might involve computer music, sound recording, interactive multimedia systems, or digital live performance tools. Notation and Editing: at level 2, in MUSS2420 Notation and Editing, you ll explore the historical notations of Western Music, transcribing music from original sources; the theory and practice of editing music is also investigated. In the level 3 module, MUSS3440 Editing and Source Studies, you ll demonstrate a range of editorial practices to deal with music and text, with an interdisciplinary approach calling upon historical, literary, sociological and cultural studies. : in MUSS2320/2340, you ll continue to have lessons with your specialist teacher, but you ll also attend performance classes, run as concerts, with rehearsal time provided with our School repetiteur. You ll engage in discussion of performances, and at level 2 and 3 (MUSS3340), you will develop skills including stagecraft, critical/reflective competence, and ensemble experience. The final year module culminates with a recital which is open to the public. Visit the School website: 7
