2 Important Information Information provided by the University such as in presentations, University brochures and the University website, is accurate at the time of first disclosure. However, courses, University services and content of publications remain subject to change. Changes may be necessary to comply with the requirements of accrediting bodies or to keep courses contemporary through updating practices or areas of study. Circumstances may arise outside the reasonable control of the University, leading to required changes. Such circumstances include: industrial action, unexpected student numbers, significant staff illness (where a course is reliant upon a person s expertise), unexpected lack of funding, severe weather, fire, civil disorder, political unrest, government restrictions and serious concern with regard to the transmission of serious illness making a course unsafe to deliver. After a student has taken up a place with the University, the University will look to give early notification of any changes and try to minimise their impact, offering suitable alternative arrangements or forms of compensation where it believes there is a fair case to do so. Offers of a place to study at the University will provide up to date information on courses. The latest key information on courses, entry requirements and fees can be found at coursefinder. Please check this website before making any decisions. WHAT WILL I STUDY? PLAZA DE LA CIBELES, PALACIO DE COMUNICACIONES, MADRID, SPAIN. We offer two Single Honours programmes: BA Spanish and BA Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. We also offer a range of joint honours programmes with Spanish and Portuguese. Our syllabus provides an exciting, coherent programme of study that progresses from broad foundational modules in the first year, through more detailed general modules at Level 2, and concludes with cutting-edge specialist modules in final year. In addition to compulsory Spanish and/or Portuguese language modules at each stage, you can choose to follow pathways that focus on culture, history and language depending on academic interests and career goals. At Level 1, you will consolidate your knowledge of Spanish language through participative classes and practice in your own time. If you wish to study Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, you will also follow an intensive Portuguese language course. In addition to language, our core Skills and Issues module introduces students to the study of society, literature and film, and to the key topics in our discipline, such as national identity, political power and resistance, and postcolonial relations. This side of the programme is complemented by optional modules on cultural production, history and Catalan. Should you wish you can study Catalan throughout your degree programme. At Level 2, in addition to further developing your language skills, you will be able to explore other interests in detail by choosing from modules on literature, theatre, film, translation, linguistics, and social and political history across Iberia and Latin America. We will also prepare you for the practical aspects and psychological challenges of living in a different country through meetings with the Residence Abroad Tutor. Following your residence abroad, Level 3 builds on knowledge and fluency developed overseas. In addition to advanced language work in Spanish Portuguese and Catalan, we offer an extensive range of specialist modules in small groups. You can also investigate, research and present a topic of your choice as part of an extended essay. Throughout your studies, you will benefit from access to the facilities of the Instituto Cervantes, Instituto Camões and Institut Ramon Llull, the language and cultural arms of the Spanish government, Portuguese government and Catalan autonomous government, which are based on campus.
3 WHY STUDY SPANISH, PORTUGUESE AND LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES AT LEEDS? BA Spanish R410 BA Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies RR45 As one of the largest units of Hispanic and Iberian Studies in UK Higher Education, we are able to offer a comprehensive syllabus on all major topics within the field, in conjunction with language modules that enable you to reach a very high level of proficiency in Spanish and Portuguese. Our advanced level modules include specialist study of a wide variety of subjects such as translation, Spanish for business, postcolonial literature in Portuguese, and Latin American culture. The excellence of our teaching in SPLAS at the University of Leeds is recognised by the Times Good University Guide 2015, placing our subject area in the top 10. Besides the strengths of our syllabus, we offer you a range of choices for your residence abroad, including a year in Latin America and work placements. Thus you will graduate with an enhanced appreciation of another culture, and experience that gives you the edge over other candidates when trying to secure your ideal job. Over the course of your studies, you will also acquire an array of skills crucial in a career post-graduation. Our degree programmes are praised by students for providing them with the ability and confidence necessary to undertake a variety of roles and tasks in the workplace with great success. In light of the increasing international prominence of Spanish and Portuguese particularly on account of the boom economies of Brazil and Mexico demand for students of Hispanic, Iberian and Latin American Studies is only going to grow in the future. I was able to combine my love for languages and my interest in politics and I absolutely loved it! My year abroad was spent in Chile, living and studying in Santiago so I discovered a new continent and new people. Marie Seng BA International Development and Spanish OLD HAVANA
4 JOINT HONOURS OPTIONS IN SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE Joint honours students study the same core topics as single honours students, but are required to choose fewer options and discovery modules. This is to allow space in their timetable for both halves of their degree. The intellectual range of such a degree, together with the organisational skill in combining two subject areas makes you very attractive to employers. Our courses allow you to study your chosen subjects in depth, and to graduate with an honours degree covering two disciplines. All joint honours degree courses with Spanish or Portuguese are parented and administered by us in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies. We are responsible for dealing with admissions and for providing you with administrative, academic, and pastoral support during your time here. We will allocate to you a personal tutor who will help guide your module choices and offer support, as well as act as a point of contact for references. BA Liberal Arts You may also wish to consider BA Liberal Arts where you can study Spanish or Portuguese as a Major subject as part of this degree. See Joint honours programmes available with Spanish and Portuguese are: BA Arabic and Portuguese BA Arabic and Spanish BA Asia Pacific Studies and Spanish BA Chinese and Portuguese BA Chinese and Spanish BA Classical Literature and Spanish BA Cultural Studies and Portuguese BA Economics and Spanish BA English and Portuguese BA English and Spanish BA European Studies and Portuguese BA European Studies and Spanish BA Film Studies and Portuguese BA Film Studies and Spanish BA French and Portuguese BA French and Spanish BA Geography and Spanish BA German and Portuguese BA German and Spanish BA History and Portuguese BA History and Spanish BA History of Art and Spanish BA International Business and Portuguese BA International Business and Spanish BA International Development and Portuguese BA International Development and Spanish BA International Relations and Portuguese RT56 RT46 TR34 RT51 RT41 QR84 VR95 RL41 QR35 QR34 RR85 RR84 WR65 WR64 RR15 RR14 RL47 RR25 RR24 RV51 RV41 RV43 1R19 1B49 LRF5 LR2K LR2M BA International Relations and Spanish BA Italian A and Portuguese BA Italian A and Spanish BA Italian B and Portuguese BA Italian B and Spanish BA Japanese and Spanish BA Linguistics and Portuguese BA Linguistics and Spanish BA Management and Portuguese BA Management and Spanish BA Music and Spanish BA Philosophy and Portuguese BA Philosophy and Spanish BA Politics and Portuguese BA Politics and Spanish BA Portuguese and Russian A BA Portuguese and Russian B BA Portuguese and Russian Civilisation BA Portuguese and Theatre and Performance BA Portuguese and Theology and Religious Studies BA Russian A and Spanish BA Russian B and Spanish BA Russian Civilisation and Spanish BA Social Policy and Spanish BA Sociology and Spanish BA Spanish and Theatre and Performance LR24 RR35 RR34 RRH5 RRH4 TR24 QR15 QR14 RN52 RN42 WR34 RV55 RV45 RL52 RL42 RR57 RR5R RR75 R5W4 RV56 RR47 RRK7 RR74 LR44 LR34 R4W4
5 Residence Abroad Options URUBAMBA VALLEY, PERUVIAN ANDES Your residence abroad enables you to make substantial linguistic progress over a wide range of registers, to acquire a deeper knowledge and appreciation of your host country, and to develop personally and professionally. Most of our students spend their year abroad studying overseas with our partner universities. We have links with universities in six Spanish-speaking countries (Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Uruguay, Chile and Costa Rica) and two Portuguese-speaking countries (Portugal and Brazil). Alternatively, you can arrange employment in any Spanish or Portuguese-speaking country with the assistance of the School s Work Placement Officer, or apply to work as a Language Assistant with the British Council. Students on our Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies programme spend the final term of their second year in Spain, so as to enable them to spend a full year in a Portuguesespeaking country afterwards. Joint honours students taking Spanish or Portuguese and another language will complete a term abroad in their stronger language at the end of Level 2, followed by a year abroad to perfect their other language. A Spanish term abroad involves a special course for non-native speakers in León or Granada. A Portuguese term abroad consists of a dedicated course for non-native speakers in Lisbon. (Please note that the joint honours combination BA Italian B and Portuguese is a five-year programme, involving two full years spent abroad.) The thing I ve enjoyed the most about studying Spanish at Leeds is their collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes there were huge opportunities to watch interesting foreign films, hear poetry and listen to talks about things that are beyond the University s curriculum. Clive Rodgers BA French and Spanish Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at Leeds
