Programme structure (levels, modules, credits and progression requirements) Overall structure of the programme B.A. Honours Fashion Design, Styling and Promotion is a three year, full time programme. (For part time mode please consult the part time diagram.) Each year - September to May - is divided into three terms covered by a set of year long modules a module is a unit of study. Each module provides credit points that allow each student to progress to the following year. Students will need 360 credit points in total for a BA Honours Degree in Fashion Design, Styling and Promotion. This made up of a total of 120credit points in each year. (note: this includes FNA modules) The Programme This programme is designed to address the many and varied fields of professional activity centred around what happens to clothes after they have been made, the burgeoning industry in Fashion related design e. g. styling and art direction, show production, branding and presentation, trend prediction, illustration, the embellishing of fabrics and the wide range of graphic skills involved in fashion publications including photography and computer generated image. Core Fashion modules run through the degree with other VCD modules allowing the student to study complementary areas of activity. The programme is enriched, informed and supported by History of Art, Architecture and Design modules, which contextualise the academic work within the Fashion modules and connect the students thinking to cultural, political, socioeconomic and philosophical issues that inform our society. The first year has modules that introduce the study of the various areas of Fashion and advance that knowledge. During the first year the student is able, through the VCD module, to start to develop their specialist skills. This module incorporates a number of workshops providing a basis of understanding of the various skills on offer in BA Fashion Design, Styling and Promotion 2009/2010 3

4 this degree e. g. photography, computer generated image, screen printing, etching and relief print, book binding. Within the Fashion module at this level, workshops to provide the basis of understanding in skills such as embellishment this includes beading, manipulation and deconstruction styling, and illustration are included which, in conjunction with the interpretation of a series of design projects allows the student to start to relate the specialist skills to Fashion. During the second year the student develops the specialist skill through the second of the VCD modules within this degree. This is combined with the Fashion module containing a series of design projects that will include interpretation using those skills. The second year includes a placement of approximately five weeks duration where the student spends time working in their chosen field of Fashion related design. The placement takes place in the weeks leading up to London Fashion Week.. The third year allows further development of the chosen specialist skills and their application to Fashion through to the final presentation of an extensive and varied portfolio of work that displays professionalism and quality. Year 1/Level 1 1, Modules FSH 1100 (30 credit points), FSH1200 (30 credit points) VCD 1400 (30 credit points) + FNA 1931 (30 credit points) The work during the year introduces a series of design projects giving a foundation in the unique aspects of Fashion Design, whose outcome is sketchbooks, portfolio presented work and a draped garment. This module also covers a series of Fashion Awareness projects and Inductions in all the workshops available to the FDSP student. Students work individually and in group discussions and critiques. All projects on the BA Fashion Design, Styling and Promotion Programme demand an intense amount of research and it is at this stage that the student begins to learn to apply an investigative and thorough approach to all aspects of their work. The History of Art, Architecture and Design module relates to, and supports, the Fashion and VCD modules and is compulsory. Year 2/Level 2 Modules FSH 2100 (60 credit points), FNA 2931 (30 credit points) VCD 2400 (30 credit points). The second year is concerned with the development of specialist skills and relating them to Fashion design styling and promotion. It includes a series of design projects that develop the student s ability to handle and understand the varied properties of realising Fashion related design through the use of their specialist and generic skills. The History of Art, Architecture and Design module follows on from the one in the first semester. The second year builds on the skills acquired in Year 1 with projects that provide an opportunity for the creative, more professional and self-directed, development and study of theoretical and technical aspects of fashion design. During the year each student is required to undertake a period of work experience. These projects are accompanied by group discussions and presentation tutorials to develop communication skills. Curriculum vitae and interview skills workshops are held to support the work placement. The work placement in the fashion industry is of approximately five weeks duration. The destination is defined in conjunction with specialist skills and a proposed career path. Year 3/Level 3 The focus of the final year is on the further developing and establishment of individuality and personal style as the student moves toward presenting final work outcomes with an encouragement to more practical thinking BA Fashion Design, Styling and Promotion 2009/2010 4

5 and a professional approach. The student at this point may opt to specialise in one or more of their specialist skills The 3rd Year is to bring the work to a conclusion and define areas of proposed professional activity. Semester 1 Modules FSH 3100 (30 credit points), FSH 3200 (60 credit points) + FNA 3930 (30 credit points) In the beginning of the third year there are a number of projects that encourage more precise location and exploration of areas of personal design interest and identify areas of work, both academic and technical, that may require further attention or focus. It is through these projects that each student is encouraged to develop a Fashion based portfolio ( that you will use when applying for jobs) that displays their design profile. There are further periods of technical tuition through self-directed study on elected specialist skills. This work covered during this year includes the History of Art, Architecture and Design Dissertation module which allows, with specialist tutor support, personal exploration and research resulting in a dissertation submitted for examination before the Christmas break. The latter part of the year is devoted to the synthesis of all previous experience and the honing of specialist skills and research that informs and supports the designing and presentation of the final portfolio and the defining of an area of proposed professional activity Levels and modules Level 1 COMPULSORY OPTIONAL PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS Students must take all of the following: Students must also choose at least XX from the following: Level 2 COMPULSORY OPTIONAL PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS Students must take all of the following: Students must also choose at least XX from the following: Level 3 COMPULSORY OPTIONAL PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS Students must take all of the following: Students must also choose at least XX from the following: BA Fashion Design, Styling and Promotion 2009/2010 5
