Topics include descriptive statistics, interval estimation, hypothesis tests, correlation and regression analysis, analysis of variance and analysis of categorical data. Emphasis is on applications, concepts and interpretation of results, rather than theory and calculations. Students use a computer software package for data analysis. Learning Objectives Select, understand and apply appropriate statistical tools for descriptive, inferential and predictive analysis of quantitative and qualitative data from a variety of scenarios. Use statistical software package for data analysis; understand basic data gathering and input considerations; and be able to interpret output. Know ethical considerations in collecting data and selection of appropriate analysis tools; and know how to report results in a fair, objective and neutral manner. Each Module has assignments, quizzes and cases, and a readings list. The Main Modules, with their direct links are: Module 1: Presenting, Describing and Inferring from a

2 Page 2 of 5 * * Sample of Numerical Data Module 2: Simple Linear Regression and Correlation Module 3: Multiple Regression and Model Building Consultation Hours Voice/ Anytime On-campus Office Hours: Other times by appointment only Main Modules Table Each Module is further broken down into topics. For example, Module 1 includes chapters 3, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Module 2 includes chapter 12. Module 3 includes chapters 12 and 13. And module 4 includes chapters 10 and 11. Assignments / Grade Statistical Methods for Management involves "learning by doing" course assignments. The assignments are broken down into four (4) categories; Module 4: Comparing Multiple Samples of Numerical Data Learning Smart (LS) lessons found at the Connect site. These are online interactive learning exercises. In general, each LS lesson (one for each chapter) is setup for 10 minutes duration but it may take longer depending on your learning progress. When you access the Connect site you will see the following links to the LS exercises: Technology Support / Help Desk (239) or (239)

3 Page 3 of 5 You can start these LS lessons at any time but note the due date of each LS in the Schedule page. The average of all LS lessons scores has a 5% weight on the final grade. No late LS is allowed. Quizzes (also through Connect): These are online mini-tests designed to build your knowledge of the topic covered in each module. Pay attention that these online quizzes allows you to continue at your own pace (that is, you do not have to answer all the problems at once) and allows you to ask for hints or even have a second chance if the question/problem is not answered correctly. Have a good understanding of the setup before attempting to solve those problems. In general, there are 3-5 problems/questions per chapter and if the data is in a spreadsheet, it will be available for you to download and solve, before you can submit the appropriate answer. Take your time, the quizzes are NOT timed, but they do have a due date. See the Schedule for due dates. The average of all quizzes has a 20% weight on the final grade. Late quizzes have a 1% penalty per hour. Cases: These are more elaborate and practical application of what we covered in each module. There are four (4) cases, one for each module. You will be able to download these assignments, solve it and upload your report to the instructor via the appropriate link in Connect. Pay attention to due dates indicated in the Schedule page. These assignments will require the use of Excel. Students are encouraged to submit their analysis or questions to the instructor for feedback with sufficient time. The statistical analysis for all cases will be done using Microsoft Excel 2010 (earlier versions also work). The average of four cases has a 50% weight on the final grade. Late cases have a 10% penalty per day Exams: This course has a comprehensive final exam. The final exam will be available online through Connect at the end of the

4 Page 4 of 5 semester. You will have a window of 2 3 days to complete. The final exam has a 25% weight on the final grade. No late exam will be accepted. The course has been designed to give you flexibility to study at your own pace but you must complete and submit assignments in the required due dates. For example, you can start/finish any of the quizzes at any time; however, there is a 1% penalty per hour late after the due date/time. You do not need to complete the LS lessons before you start or submit any of the cases but again, you need to complete them according to their due date. Through Canvas you will have access to your grading for all assignments. Pay attention that the assignments done in Connect (LS, Quizzes, Cases, Exam) will have their scores exported to Canvas grade book as soon as they are available. Should you have any questions, please contact the instructor. Grading system Grades are: A (90-100% of total points); B (80-89%); C (70-79%); D (60-69%), and F (below 60%). Incomplete will be given by exception when a limited portion of the course material has not been completed by the last exam due date, in accordance with University policy published in the Catalog. The instructor on an individual basis will review each case. Schedule The Schedule provides a map of the course, and includes an index to Modules, Assignment and Exam Due Dates. The critical item to remember is that assignment due dates cannot be delayed. The Schedule may be accessed through links available at the bottom of this syllabus.
