The course focuses on the concept of operations and supply chain in the manufacturing and service business environment.

2 Students will learn how to manage product/service design, processes of making/delivering products/ services, total quality management and six sigma principles, the value chain, lean and JIT systems, supply chain sourcing and logistics. Effects of quantitative methods such as forecasting, statistical quality/process control, breakeven /profit analysis, layout modeling, and location analysis are learned. The course centers on how these methods / techniques enhance the making and delivering the processes of an organization. The course encourages idea generation, problem framing, analytical problem solving, verbal and written communication skills, and integration of business knowledge as emphasized by the COB learning outcomes and the mission statement. These skills are utilized during the real life work experiences. LEARNING OBJECTIVES The main purpose is to provide fundamental knowledge about operations as well as its interfaces w/ other functions. Gain an understanding and appreciation of operations in business and understand how operations can provide a competitive advantage in the global multi cultural marketplace Gain an integrated knowledge of business by understanding the relationship between operations and other business functions Develop a working knowledge of the concepts and methods related to designing, performing and managing operations from customer and manager point of views Approach business problems with a system view, analyze these problems, evaluate and compare organizational issues, therefore enhance logical thinking Formulate and solve real world business problems w/ analytical tools versus intuitive solutions and interpret these formulations, therefore enhance problem solving skills Understand the influence of technology and technological skills on operational performance Enhance verbal and written communication and teamwork skills to apply and interpret operation concepts LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of this course, students will: 2 Be able to differentiate operations from other business functions and recognize operational problems Know how operations interact with finance, marketing, IS, and other business functions Be able to analyze operational problems, formulate these problems and propose solution alternatives from manager and customer point of view Know about operational concepts and principles, specifically understand and describe lean organization, six sigma, supply chain management and technologies, quality concepts and alike. You use ANGEL for the following purposes: - take on-line quizzes - take on-line surveys- Take the Getting to know you survey - download / upload computer assignments - access course slides and handouts - read announcements - check your grade and see your progress - send to your peers and your Instructor while on the web - submit your questions / comments to a discussion board about the course when it is available. Use of discussion board is strongly recommended. NOTE ABOUT FILE SUBMISSIONS: FGCU has switched to Microsoft 2007, and I use this version, however if you are still using Microsoft 2003, you need to let me know. 3. USE OF ADOBE CONNECT- This is a live classroom web based platform. Please fill out the survey about days/times you can most likely participate. I will setup several sessions during the semester. You will need an external microphone to participate to the classroom audio system (Please own one). If you cannot make it to the session, please watch the recorded sessions posted on ANGEL. IMPORTANT: It is required to participate or watch the recordings as your questions about course material and assignments will be answered during these sessions, and examples of problems will be shown. At least one member from each team should participate to the Live Classroom. IMPORTANT ABOUT ALL ASSIGNMENTS: All assignments, quizzes, write-ups are due each SATURDAY, by Midnight of the semester weeks: see the course schedule at the end of this document. 4. Some questions may be completely modified, or additional questions may be added. Also, resources will be provided to answer the questions. Case assignments are submitted as a group. IMPORTANT: One week is allowed to work on these cases. Mostly 2 cases are assigned per week due to our condensed summer schedule. See the course schedule at the end, and ANGEL calendar and dropboxes for the deadlines. Case assignments should be submitted by their due date (it is very difficult for me to grade

4 the late submits as these interfere with the current ones I have to grade, therefore no late submission is permitted. However, you can submit early if you need to have a business travel that you cannot make a schedule change). GROUP SUBMISSION RULE: Case assignments are submitted as a group. Each group needs to have a leader who coordinates the work. Also, you need to specify which question is answered by whom, so I can clearly see the contribution of each group member. - Grading: Grading is based on completeness and correctness of the solutions. Cases are submitted as group with individual contribution specified. Cases: 20 points/each: Total 160 points 5. WEB QUIZZES - Quizzes or Small Tests on Angel, 2 Tests, 50 points/ each, mostly multiple choice, fill in blank, true/false, Quiz1:05/22; Quiz2 :06/19 These exams will be timed. ANGEL exams are individually submitted. Textbook, course slides, articles should be reviewed for answering the questions. 2 attempts are allowed. Quizzes worth 100 points. 6. INTERNET E-OPS SUPPLY CHAIN AND OPERATION STRATEGY SIMULATION GAME E-Ops mimics an operation of computer assembly supply chain where customer orders are generated and parts needs to be purchased and processed in order to deliver the product on time. Achieving the highest profit, and more importantly the highest performance rating is the goal. The deadline is June 12, but this assignment can be completed earlier. However, it is recommended that you complete this assignment after the operation strategies are learned. See ANGEL for further details of the Assignment. Grading is based on how well strategies are explained with relevance to course material. Performance rating over 70 is given additional points. Individual or group submissions are accepted. However, if group submission, each group member s strategy and score should be included in the final report, therefore every student should play the game individually. Internet game is worth 20 points. 7. THE MACHINE. STORY OF LEAN WRITE UP. This is a write up assignment that is based on discussing the principles of lean / JIT, lean product design, and lean supply chain management. See the outline in ANGEL. For this assignment you need to purchase and read the Machine.. book, review the Lean articles provided under Articles, and review JIT/ Lean from our textbook. This assignment will be individually submitted. Parts of the report can be discussed throughout the term as a group. If willing to submit as a group, contribution of each member for the questions need to be clearly described as writing styles vary. Group members can distribute the work and describe the task distribution in the report. Due date: 06/19 This assignment is worth 20 points. GRADE DISTRIBUTION: 4
