2 BUS 2023 BUSINESS STATISTICS REQUIRED TEXTBOOK Statistics: Informed Decisions Using Data, 4e, by Michael Sullivan, III Access to MyStatLab.com must be purchased to access the assignments and E-Book. This is equivalent to buying an access code to MyMathLab.com, and the only difference will be the course I.D. that is provided by the professor. COURSE PREREQUISITE MATH-0403 College prep math IV is required for this course. The student will solve problems applying the concepts of random sampling, elementary probability, testing hypotheses, descriptive measures, chi-square, regression and correlation, and analysis of variance. COURSE COMPETENCIES Upon successful completion of this course, the student should: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of various statistical topics, such as frequency distribution, elementary probability theory including discrete and continuous probability distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, and simple regression analysis. 2. Be able to apply the gained knowledge to the solution of practical problems in the business and economics areas through evaluation and selection of appropriate statistical techniques. 3. Be able to use statistical software, such as Microsoft Excel, to solve business and economic problems. 4. Be able to read and interpret computer-generated statistical outputs and apply them to propose solutions to common business problems and issues. EXAMINATIONS, ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING ACTIVITY WEIGHTING Exams: 85% Homework: 10% Attendance: 5% EXAMS There are four exams. There is no extra credit. HOMEWORK Homework will be done using Pearson s StatLab. A course code will be given to you the first day of class. This is required. If you purchase the textbook at the OCCC bookstore, it will come with a course code. You may choose to use a credit card to sign up for StatLab online. The online course contains a digital copy of the textbook. Homework for each module is due on exam day. 2

3 GRADING POLICY AND PROCEDURES The grade for the semester will be determined according to the following scale: OTHER GRADE DESIGNATIONS AVERAGE COURSE GRADE % A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D Below 60% F W - I - (Official Withdrawal) Students may officially withdraw from a course until the end of the twelfth week of a sixteen-week semester (or 3/4 of the duration of a shorter course). (Incomplete) An I is not an automatic option and is given ONLY at a professor's discretion in situations of extreme extenuating circumstances. When an extreme extenuating circumstance arises, it is the student's responsibility to notify the professor immediately. If an I grade is used, the professor establishes a contract with the student to specify the work which must be completed and the date for completion. At the end of the contracted period the professor will replace the I grade with the appropriate grade: A, B, C, D, or F. Please refer to the College Catalog for a more complete definition of these grades. CALCULATOR (REQUIRED): A TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator is required. GRAPHING CALCULATOR LEASE PROGRAM The procedure for leasing a TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator is as follows: 1. Payment of $25.00 is made in the OKCCC Bursar s Office for the Calculator Lease Program. A receipt will be given to the student to bring to the Math Lab. 2. The student comes to the Math Lab with the paid receipt from the Bursar s Office. The student is then asked to sign a lease agreement acknowledging his/her responsibility for returning the calculator in working condition along with the instruction manual upon the conclusion of the lease agreement. If the calculator is not returned, the student accepts responsibility for reimbursing the Math Lab for the full cost of the calculator. Failure to do so will result in the student s account for this calculator being forwarded to a collection agency, a hold being placed on the student s official records, and refusal of future enrollments. Therefore, grades, attendance, academic status, or other information regarding a student will not be discussed with a parent, spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend, classmate, employer, legal counsel, etc. Also, no information will be given out over the telephone regardless of who is calling, and grades will not be posted either online, on a board or sent via . ACADEMIC DISHONESTY Academic dishonesty is a serious action and will not be tolerated. It includes, but is not limited to, copying another's work, allowing someone to copy your work, talking during an exam or quiz, giving information to another student during an exam or quiz, using notes on an exam or quiz. Questionable or dishonest work will be disallowed for credit, a grade of zero will be recorded, and no make-up will be permitted. Furthermore, it is a basis for referral to college administration with a request for failure and withdrawal from the class. OKLAHOMA CITY COMMUNITY COLLEGE WITHDRAWAL POLICY Beginning with the Fall 2000 Semester, the responsibility for withdrawal for non-attendance is yours. Your instructor cannot administratively withdraw you for non-attendance or because you are failing. Each instructor may have an attendance policy that impacts your final grade. Please review the course syllabi for class attendance requirements. 4

5 If you stop attending classes and do not plan on finishing the course, you must withdraw yourself from the course prior to the 12 th week of a 16-week semester or ¾ of the duration of class. Withdrawal deadlines are published in the College Class Schedule. When you withdraw from a course, the grade on your permanent transcript is a W (Withdrawn). The grade of W has no impact on your grade point average. Failure to withdraw will mean the instructor will calculate your final grade as indicated in the syllabus (which may include an attendance requirement). If you stop attending and fail to withdraw, you will more than likely receive a failing grade. This failing grade will be placed on your permanent transcript and will be used in the calculation of your grade point average. This notice supersedes all course syllabi, the College Catalog, the Student Handbook, and all other publications regarding Administrative Withdrawals (AW) by faculty for attendance. If you have questions regarding this notice, please consult with your instructor. SAFETY AND SECURITY EMERGENCY PROCEDURES The health and safety of all our students, faculty, and staff are OCCC s prime concern. The procedures outlined below are designed to deal with emergencies of various types. Students should always follow the lead of their instructors. Fire First notification will come from the fire alarm horns, sirens, and strobes. The class should gather their belongings, exit the building using the nearest exit, and move to a parking lot. Do not use the elevators. No alarm should be treated as a false alarm. Horns, sirens, and strobes are only used for fire alarms. Fire (Special Considerations) If someone in your area is not physically capable of descending the stairwell, please ensure that they remain in the area of safe refuge located just inside each upper-level enclosed first stairwell. There are emergency phones located near each of these areas. Medical For all medical related issues push the emergency button located on each classroom phone. The phone will display your room number, allowing for fast response to your location. All security officers are trained as first responders and will assist in guiding EMSA to your location. Treat all bodily fluids as if they were contaminated. Bomb If you receive a bomb threat, document as much information as possible and push the emergency button on the phone. If the decision to evacuate is given, the phone will sound an alarm and display a text message. The class should gather their belongings, exit the building using the nearest exit, and move to an open grassy area. Please turn off all wireless devices. (Cell phones, radios, laptops, and other portable devices.) Weather Tornado warnings that include OCCC will be sent directly to the classroom phone. The phone will sound and alarm and display a text message. The class should gather their belongings, move away from exterior glass and exits, and move to safer areas. These areas are lower-level interior classrooms, restrooms, and stairwells. You should familiarize yourself with the safer areas near your classroom(s). If the city/county sirens are sounding and OCCC is not in the warning area a message will be sent to the classroom phone advising this information. 5

6 Disturbance/Threats If someone is causing a disturbance in a classroom call security immediately. Push the emergency button located on each classroom phone. Distance yourself from that person, do not place yourself in the person s exit path and remove all potential weapons from the area. Shelter in place: If there is an armed person or shooter on campus: Close and lock your hallway doors. Turn off the lights, shut the blinds or move away from exposed areas. Use desks, tables and other objects to provide protection. Updated information will be sent to the classroom phone. Any incident of academic misconduct or dishonesty will be a basis for referral to the Dean with a request for withdrawal from class. Please refer to the student handbook or the college catalog for details. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course is in two parts. Part One - Descriptive Statistics Module One Objectives You will identify and use the methods and unifying ideas of exploratory data analysis to evaluate sets of data. You will learn elements of data collection: the different types of sampling and the characteristics of each. You will learn the fundamentals of the design of experiments, and will understand the various types of bias inherent in certain sampling and experiment situations. You will understand the types of conclusions that may or may not be drawn from observational studies and experiments. You will display distributions with graphs with or without the aid of a calculator/computer and interpret these graphs. You will describe distributions with measures of center (mean and median), measures of spread (quartiles, standard deviation, and variance) and the five-number summary with or without a calculator/computer. You will interpret these measures and distributions using boxplots, comparisons of properties of the measures, and outliers. You will categorize variables as explanatory or response. You will construct and interpret scatterplots for two quantitative variables with linear relationships, and will compute the correlation coefficient using a calculator and interpret it using the properties of correlation. You will calculate and use least-squares regression lines, and residuals to describe and interpret relationships between quantitative variables and recognize the limitations of correlation and regression in interpreting data. You will recognize the cause-and-effect relationship (and lack thereof) between variables. You will understand and be able to describe lurking variables and confounding. MODULE TWO Probability, Normal and Binomial Distributions 6

7 Module Two Objectives You will use the basic ideas of probability and the rules of probability to work with probability models. You will learn the language of probability in random phenomena and the uses of probability. You will learn how to describe the outcomes of a random phenomenon and assign probabilities to the outcomes. You will learn the addition rule, the rule of complements, conditional probability, and the multiplication rule. You will learn the difference between discrete and continuous random variables. You will learn the Binomial and Poisson Distributions, and understand how to apply these distributions in real-world situations. You will also learn the Normal Distribution, and understand how to apply this distribution. You will learn the importance of sampling distributions, and the Central Limit Theorem, and learn how to apply this theorem in manufacturing quality control situations. Part Two Inferential Statistics Module Three Objectives MODULE THREE Inference and Confidence Intervals You will identify and use the properties of tests of significance and confidence intervals to make decisions in situations of uncertainty concerning means of single populations, and concerning proportions of single populations. You will learn to state null and alternative hypotheses, and will learn how to use significance testing to determine the meaning of results of studies. You will learn how to calculate confidence intervals, to include calculation of appropriate sample sizes. You will learn how to properly interpret the results of these tests and intervals in applied situations. Module Four Objectives MODULE FOUR Two-Sample Problems and Chi-Square You will identify and use the properties of tests of significance and confidence intervals to make decisions of uncertainty concerning means and proportions of two populations. You will identify the properties of the chi-square distribution, and will perform chi-square and chi-square goodness of fit tests using a calculator. You will learn how to calculate expected values from a matrix of categorical variables. You will learn how to explore the contributions of individual cells to the chi-square statistic, and interpret these contributions in the context of the problem. 7
