1 Blackboard Grade Center Reference Guide Accessing the Gradebook 1. Go to the Control Panel of your course under Course Management. 2. Select Grade Instructor Student 1. Students will select the menu item you have created for them. For example, My Grades.. Adding a Link to Student Grade Center in the Course Menu 1. Click on the Add Menu Item button (Plus sign) of your course. 2. Select Create Tool Link from the drop down menu. 3. Type a name in the Name field. Select My Grades from the drop down menu. 4. Check the box next to Available to Users and click Submit. Adding Items Manually to the Grade Center 1. Go to the Grade Center area of your Control Panel and click on Full Grade 2. Click on the Create Column button. 3. Complete the Create Column Form. Column Name Required Use clear and concise titles that match items in syllabus. Description Optional Use as instructor notes; students do not see this field. Primary Display Optional Default is by Score. Click the drop down list to select a different display. Category Optional Use for assigning items to various categories; helpful for weighting. Points Possible Required Enter total points allocated for item. Due Date Optional Use for assignment due date; must be updated if course is copied. Include item in Grade Center Calculations Show this Column to Students Default is Yes. Choosing No excludes from calculations, but item is still viewable. Default is Yes. Choosing No hides the item from student view. 4. Click on the Submit button at the bottom of the page. 2 Downloading Assignment Files from the Grade Center If you are using the Assignment feature to have students submit their files to you, a quick way to retrieve these files all at once is to download them from the Gradebook item. Perform the steps below: 1. Go to the Grade Center area of your Control Panel and click on Assignments. 2. Click on the chevron icon to the right of the item s name in your Grade Center column. 3. Select Assignment File Download from the drop down menu. 4. Click on the top left box to download files for all students who submitted a file or select an individual student file by placing a checkmark in the appropriate box. 5. Click on the Submit button. 6. Click on the link for Download Assignments Now. 7. In the File Download window, select the Save button and choose your personal storage location. NOTE: The files are downloaded in a zipped or compressed folder. When you retrieve them, you will have to unzip the folder. The zipped folder will include the students assignment files as well as text files for any information entered into the comment area. The files will contain the students username in the file name. It is good practice to instruct the students to name their files with their last name_assignment name before submitting. The files will be easier to locate. 8. After you ve downloaded the files, click the OK button to return to the menu screen. Page 2 of 5

3 Entering Grades 1. Go to the Grade Center area of your Control Panel and click on either Full Grade Center or Smart Views. 2. Click on a cell in the Grade Center display (either Full Grade Center or Smart View). 3. Enter the score for the student: 4. Press the Enter key to save the score and move the cursor to the next entry in the column. 5. Repeat until all scores are entered. Organizing Grade Center Columns 2. Click the Manage button and select Column Organization from the drop down menu. 3. To the left of the grade items, there is an Action Item icon. Place your curser over this icon, left mouse click, and drag and drop the item up or down to where you want the item located. 4. Clickthe Submit button. Page 3 of 5

4 Renaming a Grade Center Item WARNING: Do not rename an item that has been automatically entered into your Grade Center (assignments, quizzes, tests). You should only change the name of an item that was added manually. 3. Select Edit Column Information from the drop down menu. 4. Delete the current text in the Column Name area and enter the revised title. 5. Click the Submit button. Making a Grade Center Item Available / Unavailable 3. Select Edit Column Information from the drop down menu. 4. In the Options section, click on the Yes or No radio button for the Include this column in Grade Center Calculations field. 5. For the Show this Column to Students field, select Yes or No by clicking on the appropriate radio button. 6. Click the Submit button. Deleting a Grade Center Item WARNING: Do not remove an item which has grades or files associated with it. Removing an item will also remove all submissions and grades for that item. 3. Select Delete Column from the drop down menu. 4. A warning box will be displayed asking you to confirm removal. Click on the OK button. Page 4 of 5

5 Downloading Grades 2. Click on the Work Offline button on the top right of the Grade 3. Select Download. 4. Data: Choose Full Grade Center or a Selected Column. 5. Options: Choose either Tab or Comma Delimiter Type for the downloaded file. NOTE: The file you download can be opened and edited using Microsoft Excel. The default delimiter type is Tab, because it opens directly in Excel. Comma Delimiter Types have to be imported into Excel. 6. Save Location: Default is set to My Computer. 7. Click the Submit button. 8. Click on the Download button and choose Save in the File Download window to store the file in your personal storage area.
