Three ways to become a teacher There are three different paths to becoming a qualified teacher. You choose the steps you take and Monash will help you get there. 1. Start your education studies from your first day with the Bachelor of Education (Honours). Focus on a single sector (e.g. primary) or gain a dual-sector qualification (e.g. early years and primary) Expert Master s (Optional) Qualified teacher 2. studied as a double degree Combine your studies in education with a second course to build a qualification that is as diverse as your interests. You will graduate after four years * with two degrees instead of one Partnered degree Expert Master s (Optional) Qualified teacher 3. Degree in another discipline followed by a Master of Teaching If you have already completed a bachelor s degree in another discipline you can complete the two-year Master of Teaching Bachelor s degree in another discipline Master of Teaching Master of Teaching specialisations can be completed in accelerated mode years. 3 80 Eight areas of specialisation At Monash, you can choose from eight areas of specialisation. These specialisations reflect the age ranges of the children or students whose education you wish to commit to, and you will graduate with an award that reflects your expertise. 1 Early 2 Early years education years and primary education education studied as a single or double degree and secondary education and secondary inclusive education and secondary health and physical education Experience teaching placements You put your learning into practice by completing a minimum of 80 days professional experience. You can stay local or head overseas, you can be in a classroom or an integral part of a community program the choices are endless and all yours. Build your confidence and gain real world experience so you re job ready when you graduate. Gain a global perspective Complete an international professional experience placement in: China, Cook Islands, India, Israel, Italy, Malaysia, South Africa, and UAE. Dual-sector specialisations The Monash advantage allows you to specialise in two educational sectors further broadening your career opportunities. Four of our specialisations allow you to do this, these include: Early years and primary education, and secondary education, and secondary inclusive education, and secondary health and physical education. Honours puts you ahead The honours component of your degree is embedded into a four-year course so that in an Australian first you will graduate with an honours qualification whatever your chosen educational setting. This is true for all single degree and double degree courses offered by Monash Education. So when you graduate from Monash after four years you are ready to take a leading role in your chosen educational setting and teaching field. It also means that if you choose to study for a fifth year either immediately or at sometime in the future you will be able to qualify with an expert master s degree, putting you ahead of the game. It also gives a grounding in research and provides a direct pathway to research degree courses. Teach the whole individual Make it a double degree A double degree course is a great option if you are interested in a teaching career, but also want to broaden your knowledge and expertise in another discipline. You will increase your career choice, and deepen your understanding of the areas you intend to teach. Secondary education is studied as a double degree, with the partner degree providing the specialist discipline knowledge for the areas in which you will be qualified to teach. Combine your or Secondary specialisation with a degree in: Secondary Arts Business Commerce Computer Science Fine Art 1 Information Technology 2 Music 3 Science 1 Fine Art students can select the Visual arts specialisation only. 2 Secondary education students can select the Software development and Business information systems majors only. 3 Students can select the Performance, Composition and creative technology and Musicology and ethnomusicology specialisations only. You will complete a minimum of 80 days of professional experience. Placement in Australia and overseas. Monash Education is among the best and is consistently ranked in the top 20 in the world by the 2013, 2014 and 2015 QS world university rankings by subject. 7 Secondary health and physical education Learn how to work with children and young people with varied needs to develop their creative, intellectual, physical, personal and social capabilities. 8 Secondary education studied as a double degree Christopher Ardi Education and arts student The best part of my course was doing my teaching placement rounds in the Cook Islands for three weeks. I taught the New Zealand equivalent of VCE, contributed ideas to the rebuilding of the school, and met some amazing people. My time there was a defining moment for me in my pre-service career, and opened my eyes to the opportunity of international teaching. 2 3

4 Real-life experience Choose your specialisation Monash University prides itself on developing graduates who are ready and well equipped to enter the world of teaching. With the Monash, you choose your specialisation and graduate with a degree that reflects your expertise. Every student completes teaching professional experience for a minimum of 80 days. Education happens beyond the classroom too, so professional experience is not just offered in schools. We work with the Australian Football League (AFL), Melbourne Museum, Zoos Victoria, Scouts Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and others to deliver education programs. You can gain a truly global perspective by participating in International Professional Experience (IPE). Teach cricket to children in the Cook Islands, or maths to kids in South Education graduate Ryan Lucas credits a fourth-year overseas teacher placement in the Cook Islands for giving him the communication skills needed for working with Indigenous youth in Central Australia. Africa, or teach English in Italy or China. The opportunities for you to learn to teach across the world are diverse. You can also stay closer to home and complete professional experience in a country town or rural community. All professional experience is arranged on your behalf by our Professional Experience Office. Even when you ve completed your studies, the travel opportunities don t end there. Ryan Lucas Education (Honours) I think my previous experience in the Cook and Solomon Islands was good preparation for Alice Springs. The fourthyear placement in the Cook Islands gave me teaching experience in a completely unique and removed setting from anything I d done before and that set me up to do this sort of remote work. The placement opportunities overseas were a great thing I took out of my time at Monash. Double degrees The education and the Secondary education specialisations of the can be studied in combination with any of the following courses: Arts Business Commerce Computer Science Fine Arts Information Technology Music Science Taking a double degree combination will lead to the award of two degrees; your chosen specialisation in the Bachelor of Education (Honours) and the degree awarded for the partner course. In a double degree course, you will need to meet the course requirements for both degrees. Refer to the individual course entries for each course in your double degree. Enrolment Considerations: Literacy and Numeracy test - From 1 July 2016, the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership requires all students of initial teacher education courses to successfully complete the National Literacy and Numeracy Test prior to graduating. Working with Children Check - Before participating in a professional experience placement in any educational setting, students must meet specific security clearances that apply to the state or territory where the placement is being undertaken. Early years education Qualified to teach infants and children from birth to 5 years of age If you hold a Diploma of Children s Services (or equivalent) and want to upgrade your qualifications and advance your career, this is for you. You can continue to work while you study by choosing flexible delivery, available at our City campus. You will learn to develop the creative, physical, personal, intellectual and social capabilities of young children. Education studies including contemporary child development, psychology and the social and cultural context of education, provide the foundations for understanding holistic and play-based learning and effective early years teaching practice. You will develop strategies to promote children s early literacy and numeracy, and their concepts of health, science, the arts, technology and environment. You will also discover how to work in partnership with families and communities to support children s learning and support their transition to school. Early childhood education is one of the most important growth areas in education. With this specialisation you will be in demand as a future leader in this vital sector. City, Peninsula 80 days Additional information The entrance requirement for this specialisation is different to the others. Admission into this specialisation requires successful completion of a graded Diploma of Children s Services or equivalent, completed within the last 10 years. Applicants who meet this requirement will enter the course with a minimum of one year of advanced standing and commence the course in Year 2. Early years and primary education Qualified to teach infants and children from birth to 12 years of age This dual sector qualification will offer you multiple options as a graduate, ensuring your flexible skills remain in demand. You will learn how to develop children s creative, physical, personal, intellectual and social capabilities by studying contemporary child development, psychology and the social and cultural context of education. You will study how primary-school aged children learn and how to effectively teach across the primary curriculum. Areas of study include English and literacies, mathematics, arts, education, humanities and social education, science,health and physical education, and environment and sustainability. This specialisation equips you with the knowledge to become a leader and manager in a range of earlyyears education and primary school settings. Peninsula 90 days education Qualified to teach children from 5 to 12 years of age You will develop your discipline knowledge of the primary curriculum areas, including: English and literacies, mathematics, arts education, humanities and social education, science, health and physical education, and studies of the environment and sustainability. You can choose to broaden your career options by studying education concurrently with a second degree. In the single degree course, you will complete additional discipline studies, developing a highly marketable strength in your choice of English and literacy, or mathematics and numeracy, or in a language other than English (LOTE). In the double degree course, you will take studies towards the partner degree in a discipline of your choice. You will be prepared for a future as a leading teacher in a range of primary school settings. 6 Specialisations and secondary education and secondary inclusive education Secondary education studied as a double degree course and secondary health and physical education Secondary health and physical education Professional Accreditation Our courses are accredited by: Qualified to teach children and adolescents from 5 to 18 years of age This specialisation will qualify you to teach children and adolescents aged five to 18 years, in both primary and secondary schools. You will develop your discipline knowledge of the primary curriculum areas, including: English and literacies, mathematics, arts education, humanities and social education, science, health and physical education, and studies of the environment and sustainability. You will also develop specialist discipline knowledge in at least two secondary teaching areas, with a broad range of options available spanning the arts, humanities, social sciences, science, mathematics, business, commerce, and information technology. This dual sector qualification will offer you multiple career options, ensuring your flexible skills remain in demand across primary and secondary schools and a range of community contexts. Clayton 85 days 40 hours fieldwork Pending accreditation Qualified to teach children and adolescents from 5 to 18 years of age This specialisation will qualify you to teach children and adolescents aged from five to 18 years in primary and secondary schools, equipping you with specialist knowledge and skills for working in inclusive and special education settings. You will develop the discipline basis for the broad primary curriculum as well as specialist knowledge in at least one secondary teaching area. You will also learn how to adapt curriculum for children with additional needs including (but not limited to) disability, giftedness, mental health issues and people from non-english speaking backgrounds. You will access resources to assist students with complex needs, including those with multiple disabilities or whose disabilities may require a high level of support. You will collaborate and consult with other teachers, support personnel, parents, allied health professionals and agency representatives crucial relationships for teachers working with children with diverse needs. You will be in demand in a range of school contexts including inclusive and special education settings and well prepared for a future as a leading teacher. Clayton 85 days 40 hours fieldwork Pending accreditation Qualified to teach adolescents from 12 to 18 years of age When you study secondary education as a double degree, you will specialise in two teaching areas. Your partner degree to Education provides you with the specialist discipline knowledge for the areas you will be qualified to teach. For example, if you would like to be a Chemistry and Physics teacher, you would select the and Bachelor of Science double degree course. There are an extensive number of secondary teaching areas available at Monash, which draw on a wide range of majors and specialisations from the eight partner degrees: Arts, Business, Commerce, Computer Science, Fine Art, Information Technology, Music and Science. You will be an expert specialist teacher capable of leading innovation in a range of secondary school settings. Clayton 80 days Additional information Combine your secondary education studies with a degree in another discipline. Choose from: Arts Business Commerce Computer Science Fine Art Information Technology Music Science Qualified to teach children and adolescents from 5 to 18 years of age This specialisation will qualify you as a generalist primary school teacher, a specialist health and physical education primary school teacher, and a secondary school teacher with health and physical education as your two specialist teaching areas. You will develop discipline knowledge for the primary curriculum and specialist expertise in the teaching areas of health and physical education. You will learn about the biophysical and behavioural foundations of health and physical education, and how to optimise individual potential for health and wellbeing, and build healthy, active communities. In learning how humans develop movement skills, you will acquire theoretical foundations and practical approaches to coaching across contexts including games, challenges and sports developing advanced laboratory and fieldbased skills for sport and exercise science. This will give you the flexibility and expertise to turn your passion for health and wellbeing into a productive and rewarding career in a wide range of settings. Peninsula 85 days Qualified to teach adolescents from 12 to 18 years of age You will qualify as a specialist secondary school teacher in three areas: health (including human development), physical education, and a third teaching area of your choice. You will study how to effectively and creatively teach young people about health and physical activity. You will learn about the biophysical and behavioural foundations of health and physical education, and how to optimise individual health and wellbeing to build healthy, active communities. In learning how humans develop movement skills, you will understand theoretical foundations and practical approaches to coaching across contexts including games, challenges and sports developing advanced laboratory and field-based skills relevant to sport and exercise science. Your third teaching area could be one of the following: outdoor education and environmental studies, biology with a focus on exercise physiology, business, geography, mathematics or social education. With coaching and leadership expertise gained from this qualification, you can look forward to a career in physical education, health and human development teaching, which will be in demand in schools as well as the broader community. Peninsula 80 days Outdoor education and environmental studies students undertake 20 additional days of fieldwork experience. Australian Children s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) This means when you graduate you have the education qualifications to be an early childhood educator or a registered teacher in Victoria. If you want to teach interstate or overseas, you should check the registration requirements with local authorities. 8 9

You will study contemporary theories of child or adolescent development, focusing on the age range relevant to your specialisation. You will also study sociology, psychology, diversity and inclusion, the broad principles of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, and develop an understanding of the relationship between education and society at local, national and global levels. These studies emphasise educational inquiry and will ensure that your teaching is informed by current research and practice. You will acquire the foundation to move into leadership roles as your career progresses. These studies develop the knowledge and skills you will need to become a skilled and effective educator who is able to draw on an ever-growing and flexible repertoire of strategies to suit particular children, educational contexts and learning outcomes. You will learn how to design, plan and implement engaging, innovative and productive learning experiences in order to meet diverse learners needs. For students specialising in early years education, content knowledge and discipline studies are integrated within the curriculum studies theme, and the emphasis is on exploring young children s learning holistically in diverse contexts, through a range of pedagogical perspectives and practices. For students specialising in primary education, the focus of curriculum studies is on how primary school aged children learn and how you can effectively and creatively teach them in the key learning areas including English and literacies, mathematics, creative arts, technology, science, health and physical education, social education and studies of the environment and sustainability. For students specialising in secondary education, the focus is on deepening your understanding of teaching and learning strategies, theories and practice related to your discipline, preparing you to engage secondary students in purposeful learning. These studies will develop your content knowledge in the subjects you will be teaching in schools or other education settings. In early years education, discipline studies are integrated into the curriculum studies theme. In primary education you will take discipline studies in a range of areas to complement teaching in the primary years. In the single degree course, you will choose a discipline area in English and literacy, or mathematics and numeracy, or a language other than English (LOTE). In the double degree course, you will take studies towards the partner degree in a discipline of your choice. In secondary education you will typically take discipline studies to teach two learning areas from a range of subjects including history, visual arts, science, mathematics, English, economics, and information technology and computing. You will take these studies within the partner degree course in disciplines of your choice from the available specialist teaching areas. In health and physical education you will take studies in a dual health and physical education discipline and another discipline of your choice from the available specialist teaching areas. In inclusive education you will develop approaches to meet the special needs of learners, in primary and secondary schools or other educational settings, and focus on the fields of diversity and inclusive education. These studies will provide you with an understanding of professional identity and leadership as well as professional experience through the completion of supervised placement in settings relevant to your teaching specialisation. Professional experience connects the theoretical components of the other themes with practical aspects of teaching and learning. The number of days of professional experience required for professional registration will depend upon your specialisation. You will also undertake research units to develop your understanding of research principles and methods and the skills and capacities to design and conduct research with some independence. 8 Education pathways Continue your journey of discovery How to apply Our students follow many different paths to their teaching degree, including TAFE studies or transfer from another university course. At Monash your age is not a factor when you apply just your education background and experience. The year of entry depends on what you have studied previously and your results. Diploma of Tertiary Studies (DoTS) Monash University Foundation Year Once you complete the Bachelor of Education (Honours), you can choose from a range of postgraduate courses that further enhance your expertise. And because you have already completed an honours degree, you will be able to complete an expert master s degree in just one more year. 4 years 1 year Domestic (Australian) and onshore international students Apply through VTAC If you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or you are an international student studying an Australian Year 12 or IB in Australia or New Zealand, apply through the Victorian Tertiary Admission Centre (VTAC). Visit: vtac.edu.au Duration: 1 year Intake: Semester 1 (February) Campus: Clayton, Peninsula For domestic applicants only ATAR of 50+, with a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English. TAFE applicants can apply with a recognised Certificate IV average grade of 70%, and a recognised Diploma average grade of 60%. All applicants need to submit an online Supplementary form stating why you want to study at Monash. Upon successful completion of DoTS you can move straight into second year of selected specialisations. Diploma of Higher Education (DoHE) Duration: 1 year Intake: Semester 1 (February) Campus: Clayton For domestic applicants only ATAR of 65+ with a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English. TAFE applicants can apply with a recognised Certificate IV average grade of 70%, and a recognised Diploma average grade of 60%. All applicants need to submit an online Supplementary form stating why you want to study at Monash. Upon successful completion of DoHE you can move straight into second year of select and Bachelor of Science double degree course or Secondary Education. Monash Access Program (MAP) Duration: 8 months Intake: May Campus: Clayton For domestic applicants only MAP is an enabling program for mature-age students who have not undertaken prior university study. Applicants must be 21+ years of age by 1 January of the year you enrol All applicants need to submit an online Supplementary form stating why you want to study at Monash. Upon successful completion of MAP you can progress into first year of selected specialisations. MAP has no tuition fees; however, you will need to pay for other costs including books, stationery and transport. For international students only Students who successfully complete the Monash University Foundation Year can enter the at first year. Monash College diplomas For international students only Monash College diplomas provide a pathway into Bachelor of Education (Honours) double degree courses. Students must study the relevant Monash College diploma to be considered for admissions and advanced standing (credit). For example, if you are interested in the and Bachelor of Science double degree course, you must successfully complete the Monash College Diploma of Science. Single units If you don t meet minimum academic requirements, two single units at an Australian higher education institution satisfy minimum entry requirements, but more units may be useful for selection, and studies that have a language or mathematics bias and/or relevance to education may assist in the selection procedure. Applicants should have at least a 60% average in their studies. Studies must have been completed within 10 years of intended commencement. TAFE qualifications (graded) TAFE qualifications must be graded to be considered for admission into the. VET Certificate IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma graduates: To be considered, applicants will normally require at least 70% average. Preference will be given to students whose prior studies are related to the course in which they are seeking admission. Programs that involve competency-based assessment without grades or marks will not meet the admission requirements. Students who are eligible to continue their studies through enrolment in a PhD will be required to complete additional research preparation within the first 12 months of their program.
