2 If you aspire to be a doctor, Monash provides you with the opportunities to reach those goals. Since Monash s inception in 1961, our medical students have been involved in changing the world. Over the years, the faculty has grown and we are now at the forefront of research and education in the medical field. Consistently ranked in the top medical programs in the world we have achieved a lot in just over 50 years. Your options for Medicine at Monash Our five-year direct entry medical program gives you the opportunity to start on the path to becoming a doctor straight after completing your secondary schooling. The Direct Entry Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Honours) (MBBS), offered at the Clayton campus, is the only direct-from-school medical degree offered in Victoria. Monash also offers a graduate entry program. The Graduate Entry Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Honours) (MBBS) is available to students who have undertaken another degree with a significant amount of biomedical science content. The first year of this four year degree is offered at Monash University s School of Rural Health in Churchill, with the further three years undertaken in clinical locations around metropolitan Melbourne, south eastern Victoria or north west Victoria. Course outline Taking a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach, both MBBS programs provide for a continually expanding level of medical experience. From the early years of the programs students learn the fundamental medical sciences in context of patient care. The basic medical and behavioural sciences (anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, psychology and sociology) are introduced within interdisciplinary units. Clinical case studies ensure that there is a major focus on clinical issues. The curriculum is designed as an integrated program incorporating four themes: Personal and Professional Development; Population, society, health and illness; Scientific basis of clinical practice; and Clinical skills. Units are taught in an interdisciplinary fashion by staff from a range of departments across the Faculty. Later in the course (Year 3 for direct entry and Year B for graduate entry), clinical teaching builds upon and reinforces this strong scientific foundation with an emphasis on clinical communication skills. See the handbooks for more detail about course structure: Entry Requirements The Direct Entry MBBS is only available to: current Year 12 students; or applicants who have completed VCE (or equivalent) no more than two years prior and have not commenced any tertiary studies during that time. IMPORTANT NOTE: Applicants who have commenced tertiary study, including Certificate IV, are ineligible to apply for this course and should consider the graduate entry program. Selection procedure Selection into the Direct Entry MBBS is based on a combination of the applicant s UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test), academic studies in Year 12 or equivalent, and performance at a Multiple Mini Interview. Equal weighting is given to each of the three selection components. The Graduate Entry MBBS is only available to: Graduates of a recognised tertiary degree with a significant component of Biomedical Science content (2015 and 2016 entry). From 2017, only students with a Monash degree in Biomedical Science, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy or Science (with specified units completed) will be eligible for entry. GAMSAT will not be required for 2017 entry and beyond. Selection procedure (2015 and 2016) Selection into the Graduate Entry MBBS is based on a combination of the applicant s GAMSAT result (40%) and performance at a Multiple Mini Interview (60%). The completion of a relevant tertiary degree is a hurdle requirement and is not factored into the final calculation for selection. Selection procedure (2017) From 2017, only the following Monash University degrees will be accepted as meeting the minimum requirements for Graduate Entry MBBS: Biomedical Science (including double degrees), Pharmacy, Physiotherapy and Science (with specified units). From 2017, at least 50 of the 75 places available into the Graduate Entry MBBS, will be reserved for students who have completed Monash University s Bachelor of Biomedical Science. Bachelor of Biomedical Science students (including those undertaking double degrees) who maintain a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70 or above at the end of the second semester of their penultimate year will be offered the opportunity to undertake a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) for the Graduate Entry MBBS. Conditional offers will be made based on ranking of academic performance and interview prior to the commencement of third or final year. Students given a conditional offer are required to maintain their WAM during the third (or final) year of the Biomedical Science program. The remaining 25 available places will be open for application to final year students from other specified degrees including Biomedical Science. For more information please see:

3 What is a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)? At Monash we use an eight station Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). Each circuit comprises a series of scenarios and associated questions focusing on applicants personal qualities including: Motivation Communication Skills Critical Thinking Ethical and Empathetic reasoning Each applicant is given two minutes reading time followed by eight minutes to answer five questions relevant to the scenario. At the completion of the eight minutes, there is a further two minute change over and reading time for the next scenario. The MMI format allows the Faculty to determine which applicants possess the personal qualities required to succeed in the MBBS program as well as the qualities that we are looking for in health care professionals. Take your medical degree to the next level If you are looking to further challenge your learning experience, the Honours degree of Bachelor of Medical Science allows you to work on a research topic with Australian and internationally recognised researchers. This twelve-month program, offered to MBBS students and graduates, can be an important part of developing a commitment to be at the forefront of medical research. During this time you will be immersed in a setting that will introduce you to research practice where you will learn skills relating to data analysis and the communication of scientific ideas. Projects are offered across an array of research streams. For further information visit: IMPORTANT NOTE: It is vital that applicants are aware of the interview dates and make themselves available during these times. Only those applicants who attend an interview will remain eligible for a place in the MBBS program. The Faculty does not run interviews outside of the allocated times l 3

6 Access Schemes Direct Entry Dean s Rural List Applicants from a rural background are strongly encouraged to check their eligibility for the Dean s Rural List (DRL) as it may increase their chance of gaining an interview for the Direct Entry MBBS program. The Australian Government requires that medical schools offer a number of places to applicants from a rural background. Monash University offers approximately 80 additional interviews to these applicants through our Dean s Rural List (DRL) scheme. To be eligible, applicants must have resided according to principal home address in areas classified as RA 2-5 for a combined total of five years or more since beginning primary school. The RA classification of many towns can be checked via otd/publishing.nsf/content/locator Information will be sent via in October 2014 to all timely VTAC applicants who are eligible. Dean s Indigenous List Australian Indigenous applicants to the medicine course may apply to be considered for a place in the course via the Dean s Indigenous List (DIL). Information will be made available to all timely VTAC applicants in October 2014, setting out eligibility requirements for the Dean s Indigenous List. Further information about support for Indigenous students at Monash can be found at: Graduate Entry Rural Scheme Applicants who have resided in a rural area (RA2-RA5) for at least five years (consecutively or cumulatively) including those from the Gippsland region are eligible to be considered via the rural scheme. When applying via GEMSAS applicants should select the appropriate postcode and supply the dates involved as well as any supporting documentation. 7 Categories of places Each year around 240 Direct Entry places are available to domestic students and 75 in the Graduate Entry degree. An additional 60 to 65 places are available for international fee-paying students (Direct Entry) and a further 15 for Graduate Entry. Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) Direct Entry: 150 places available, Graduate Entry: 52 places available. Extended Rural Cohort (ERC) Direct Entry only About 30 CSP places are available under the Extended Rural Cohort stream. The ERC stream within the MBBS enables students to undertake extended clinical training across rural and regional Northern Victoria. Detailed information about the ERC can be found at: Bonded Medical Places (BMP) The federal government requires that all Australian medical schools allocate approximately 25 per cent of their CSP places as BMP. At Monash this means that there are approximately 60 Bonded Medical Places in the Direct Entry program and a further 19 places for Graduate Entry. By indicating a preference for a BMP, upon accepting an offer, the student will be required to sign a contract provided by the Commonwealth Government. Monash advises potential students to seek early legal advice. Students accepting a BMP will be required to work in a designated area of medical need at the completion of their training, including specialist training. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident at the time of application to be eligible to apply for a BMP. NOTE: Only NZ citizens who have a New Zealand Special Category Visa dated 26 February 2001 or earlier are eligible for BMP. For further information free call: , BMPscheme@health.gov.au or visit MBBS ERC students William Goss, Lachie Evans, Jake Malouf, Saada Malouf and Harry Goss enjoy undertaking most of their clinical experience in regional Victoria. Student Profile William Goss wanted a career that focussed on interaction with people, as well as an opportunity to use problem solving skills, at the same time as providing a sense of making an impact. After four years in the Direct Entry MBBS he has found the program rewarding and challenging. When researching his options for medical programs, Will was impressed with the how the Monash MBBS program was delivered with a focus on problem-based learning from day one of year one, as well as the holistic approach to patient care. Will is part of the Extended Rural Cohort, which allows students to take the bulk of the clinical component in regional Northern Victoria. The differences within the ERC program don t become evident until the clinical years (3-5), Will explains, as the first two years are spent entirely at the Clayton campus. Will has found that the theory component of the degree fits in nicely with the ward/ clinical experience and the simulation programs. Having studied the basic sciences such as anatomy and physiology in year 1 and 2, the following years focus on building that foundation into clinical knowledge, he explains. Will s clinical experience to date has seen him spend 18 months in Bendigo and a further six months in Castlemaine. The simulation program in Bendigo is run by very highly qualified tutors, who go out of their way to help the students. It allows the students to put the theory into practice in real life situations. This has been one of the best aspects of the ERC program. However, the best part of Will s experience to date has to do with the people. The students and staff are all great to spend time with, and have a passion for what they do, making the course very enjoyable. While study is an important focus for Will, he has found that the he has had time to get involved in the range of extracurricular activities that are a big part of uni life. My main passion is sport/exercise, and university does not mean you have to give these up, he says. There are a number of sporting clubs at the university, and various social competitions as well. While injuries have temporarily halted my football career, I have played cricket at numerous clubs throughout my time at Monash. Will explains that this is a great way to meet other people from the community and to maintain both physical and mental health whilst studying. I ve also been involved in a number of the student clubs, including WILDFIRE- the rural and Indigenous health club. This has been a great experience and presented me with many amazing opportunities and I would encourage any health science student to get involved! My advice when choosing a career is pretty simple: choose a course that you are passionate about. If you are learning something that you are interested in it is far easier and more enjoyable to dedicate time towards to it. Medicine would be a very difficult course if you weren t interested in the content!
