Dr. Fuhrman East York Office Reminders Winter Reminders: Students go outside for recess when the temperature feels like it is 25 degrees and above. Please make sure they are dressed properly to play outside. Breakfast will be served if there is a 1 hour delay. Breakfast will NOT be served if there is a 2 hour delay. Please review your Emergency Weather Dismissal Plan with your learner. The form on the following page was completed and returned to the classroom teacher. If you have made any changes to the plan, please send an updated version to your learner s teacher. Spring Testing Notice: Grades 3-5 PSSA testing will occur April 3-7 (ELA) and April (Math) Grade 4 PSSA Science testing will occur May 1-5. Please avoid scheduling appointments during these times. Education trips will not be approved during the testing windows.

If your child has had a dental exam during their 2 nd or 3 rd grade school year, this is acceptable. Forms should be at the school prior to January 20, Students who are s ll missing the dental requirement should have received a dental form just prior to the holiday break (check their backpack!). Choose to do ONE of the following: 1 Please have your den st complete the form, if your child has been to the den st within the past year. Dental exams must be dated a er August 20, Take the form to your child s next appointment if it within the next 4 months AND please call the school informing us that you plan a private exam for your child. 3 NO dental insurance or private den st? no problem! If you are unable to have your child examined by a private den st, the school den st will provide a screening here at school in late February. YOU MUST CALL THE SCHOOL to let us know this is your op on. We will schedule your child to see the school den st. Dental forms can be found on the district website under district forms. 4 East York Guidance News January 2017 I love setting goals and making New Year s resolutions. I don t necessarily wait for a new year to make changes (unless it s December and the change is improving my eating!), but there is something about a blank slate that energizes and fills me with optimism. Unfortunately, my goals often don t go as planned. I m usually lucky to make it to the end of January before all my grand plans have fallen by the wayside, and by the time the year is over very little has been accomplished. That s upsetting, but it doesn t stop me from thinking the next year will be different. After doing this year after year, I m determined to make this year different, but instead of just thinking, I m going to try harder and do better, I m changing the way I manage my goals. This year, I m creating SMART goals in an ultimate effort to form better habits. There are multiple definitions of SMART goals floating around, but the main idea is to create a detailed plan on how the goals will be achieved. Instead of simply saying, I want to get organized, I m going to break my goals into Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound steps. Students often make goals that are too broad, too far away, and most likely will be forgotten about or given up on. By having a SMART goal, students can focus on one thing at a time and try to make improvements in academics in small steps. With a SMART goal, students have moved from stating their goal as I want to pass my class to I want to get above a 70 in math class by the end of the marking period. To do this, I will study with a partner for tests, do all my homework, and ask my teacher for help. This goal is important to me because I want to get my ipod back from when I had poor grades last marking period. I will meet this goal in 10 weeks and I will know I met this goal because of the grade on my report card. What are your family s SMART goals for 2017? Happy chatting and Happy New Year! All proceeds from t shirts sales with support York Suburban Dollars for Scholars and their mission to provide scholarships to Suburban graduates. 6 What is the Impact Foundation (IF)? The Impact Foundation (IF) is a student-run committee of the York Suburban Education Foundation (YSEF) formed in the fall of IT has one goal - students helping students within their own school community. How does the Impact Foundation help YS students? The Impact Foundation raised money to build and stock Impact Closets in all six YS buildings with what students need the most: food, clothes, sneakers, school supplies, personal hygiene products and more. These items are 100% free for students who need them and can be accessed at any point by a student. The goal is for the student to get what they need so they do not lack the essentials for school and home and can concentrate on learning. How can these items be accessed? Students can ask teachers and staff to access the closet at recess or during a break in their day. They could also simply ask to go to the nurse or the office and faculty at those locations will escort the student to the closet in their building. How can I donate? The Impact Foundation will post regular updates on YSEF s Facebook page listing specific items that are needed in the schools. Like the York Suburban Education Foundation s Facebook page to receive notifications, and then deliver your donation to any school. IF is also collaborating with the PTO s to hold product drives during the year. You may also make a cash donation by visiting that will help buy needed products overtime.
